No 2D panel? Seriously!?

Featured Replies

I don't mind PMDG experimenting with the VC thing for their lite product. As long as they have a 2D panel for the A320 that displays the PFD, ND, upper and lower ECAM screens, I'll be happy!Paul

Can someone from development please give a short answer to this? What can we expect in the NG 2.0/NGX?Andreas
Hi Andreas,a couple of months ago in a similar topic in this forum Robert R. stated commuters like J41 would be provided with VC only whereas airliners will include 2D.HTHGru
I know what you mean regarding the odd angle for viewing the overhead, but after looking at it and trying to picture it from the FSX position, it is quite easy to operate.I actually find the MD-11 overhead easier to access, but I think it is because it is a larger flight deck.Best regards,Robin.
Yes, you can get used to it, but I'd be more enthusiastic about VC's if you didn't have to. Without tooltips it's hard to tell one overhead switch from another.VC's are great for "head up" virtual flying but as soon as you have to operate the aircraft things go downhill rapidly IMO, and I opt for 2D clarity. Fortunately, it sounds like the J41 is the exception in being VC only, not the rule. :( Kevin

It's easier than you think! If you think FSX is hard to navigate - try DCS:BS in the heat of combat. That's hard. TrackIR or similar is almost a MUST otherwise expect to lose your rotors at the first opportunity. If you tweak the VC view as I have done it makes a lot of difference. Whilst the default configuration may be technically accurate, usability is close to zero. Sitting further back helps a lot, whilst enabling you to keep a reasonable zoom level (and thus clarity).I certainly wouldn't criticize it until you've given it a serious go.Best regards,Robin.
I'll be damned if I can change the default VC view.I have added another view successfully, but the default "Virtual Cockpit" view will not budge. AARGGHHH!!
I believe the default view is to be found here:[Views]eyepoint = 21.051,-1.21,3.44first have a look here:http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?...e_cameras_viewsI actually did get it to work, but I've yet to find a cookbook description of how to do it. What worked for me, is to follow the suggestions in this forum as far as saving the flight and opening the flt file. The trick is that the translation values that you need to adjust the eyepoint in the aircraft.cfg file are not in the same sequence, nor in the same units.. :-( Once you realize that the camera values are x,y,z but the eyepoint values are z,x,y and that the translation values are in meters, but the eyepoint values are in feet, then you are pretty much there! So, as an example, I've permanently changed the eypoint in the Carenado C182Q to my liking. Example: translation=0.02, 0.05, -0.23eyepoint=-3.48,-0.90,1.98turns into: (Views) //eyepoint=-3.48,-0.90,1.98 original in feet //adjustment: -0.23, 0.02, 0.05 in meters! eyepoint=-4.23, -0.83, 2.14

It kinda makes me wonder. Will the 737NGX and A320 be VC only too? I mean PMDG has been slowly and forcefully nudging us into new ideas and standards, for example making the aircraft systems as real as possible and forcing new people to learn the systems, making the VC in the MD11 undisable-able (lol) unlike the 747 and 737, now a VC only plane for FSX only, and to be honest in my opinion they've managed to make these new ideas work whether we like it or not, we just cant resist their products.....I mean now im planning to buy FSX and the JS41 after preaching to myself that ill never use FSX, (i still dont plan to abandon my old faithful FS9 either) and im not even really a VC or a turboprop guy...makes me wonder if one will give in to this new idea sooner or later

I still have FS9 on my machine and like flying the 737NG with it's 2d panel, but like you said:FS9 = 2d panels + 4:3 monitor format (like 1280x960)FSX = Virtual Cockpits + wide screen monitor formats (like 1680x1050)

Your not joking about the Black shark at all. Although I cant use my track ir with it, for what ever reason i get a nausea feeling when using it in that cockpit. I had to assign a button to let my mouse do the moving around. I have used it the track ir in the cessna and helos in fsx with no issue though. My only problem with track ir is it never seems to be in the right place for clicking things not sure if it just needs tweaking in the track ir program or if its the angle in which im sitting to it. I have tried it in the leveld vc and it is not a good choice for that plane but works great in the smaller cockpits. Now as far as vc's in general i use them anytime im taxing as it just easier to see around you and judge location to things. Now for take off in the Leveld I use 2d. The only reason for that is that when I try and click things the seem to move and I end up chasing the knob, I guess I need to turn off the motion effect or what ever its called in FSX. I think I will be picking up the J41 after im done this post as its been a long time since I purchased a PMDG product. Not to mention that I can still fly them with my VA.

Whish commuters had a 2D panel as well...Andreas
Me too, oh well.Scott

I forget when I last used the 2D full panel in an FS addon. I have been purchasing addons for a few years, and boy, have we seen the VC environment develop...Then along comes a little piece of hardware called TrackIR...I have hardly used it in the big jets, but it is a regular, I would even say necessity for some, for GA and warbirdsI am still getting used to the various ways of "navigating" around the virtual environment in FSX.I don't miss the lack of 2D panel, I may well never have noticed there wasn't one it if hadn't been mentioned, since my setup automatically starts the VC versions...This is one of the longest running discussions in FS, the 2D vs 3D panel users, almost akin to the Boeing vs Airbus debaters...If you can't survive in FS without 2D panels, then the aircraft is not for you, the same way that the DA Fokker is not for me, as they still haven't released the VC update for it... But I can live with that, as there are plenty of other planes in the sky with beautifully crafted VCs, like the JS41 :( Andrew

Already covered in this thread by using X-Mouse.
Folks, tried to find XMouse. Is there a dedicated download place somewhere or do you mean the MS tool which obviously needs a trick to work in Vista: http://www.windowsvistaplace.com/trick-to-...a/othersoftwarePhil

Phil,This is where I found it. From reading this page (And my experience in Windows7), it shouldn't need a "trick" to work in Vista. I'm not sure what that page you posted is referring to.http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm
Thanks Mike, just downloading. Will test drive it at home later tonight.Phil

PMDG isnt moving to a VC only business plan right?I mean, for some of us, the 2D panel is all we use, specifically to those individuals who get alot of enjoyment out of line by line checklist operations and procedures. I myself have this mindset, and a VC is very distracting to me personally. No real sims have VC cockpits, for the simple reason that VC cockpits put the environment over the training value.Im not trying to to convince anyone that any type of panel layout is better than another, as it depends on your personal preference. But some people still prefer the 2D, over the VC... I hope you can consider this preference PMDG and keep a dual cockpit business model. Thanks
