I don't think MS will even bother with DX10. Will most likely be Windows Vista and 7 only using Direct X11
HelloWell DX11 will certainly narrow the potential user base down, From a sales point of view why would MS want to limit the number of folks who could run the game?

What is wrong with saying "that's why it's so fun" ? I am a professional editor and I see nothing wrong with that "silly cow's" quote. I do have a correction for you. It should be "If I were at the controls," not "was at the controls."
The difference is that on a forum, I'll use colloquial speech and idioms such as 'I was', since I regard the forum as an informal conversational environment and write in such an appropriate informal fashion, thus I don't ever pull anyone up on a forum for doing similar, as forum grammar n@zis are batting against the wind anyway, but where products are concerned, it's a different matter entirely. Microsoft is a professional company and they are releasing a professional product, so one would assume that in employing someone to do voiceovers, they'd write a script and pick an actor who knew how to speak correctly. Having been a writer and editor for the GMG for over ten years, and as someone who teaches a writing course, when in that professional environment, I write professionally, and I would like to think that MS, being a large professional company, would adhere to similar standards. To explain, in case you really don't see what is wrong with saying 'that's why it's so fun', which is worrying if you are a professional editor. Fun can be a noun, e.g. when describing a thing which provides amusement, or it can be an adjective, but only when placed within the correct sentence structure, as in a description of 'a fun thing to do', or it can in more recent language developments be occasionally a verb, as in the horrendous idiom 'funning'. Thus 'that's why it's so fun' is grammatically incorrect, and the sentence should most probably be, 'that's why it's so much fun' or 'that's why it is fun', or possibly 'that's why it is so enjoyable', but never 'that's why it's so fun', as it is not a grammatically correct form to place the adverb 'so' in front of the word 'fun'.Now as an idiom, that is admittedly a language structure which is common particularly in the United States, where the English language is continually devastated on a daily basis and things such as adverbs are a mystery to the average citizen. Nevertheless, that's fine for everyday speech and forums etc, since language in conversational form is a continually evolving thing and there is no point in getting upset about it, because it is the way it is in that country, and indeed on the intertron, but since the MS Flight product is to be sold worldwide, and amongst other things is on occasion regarded as an educational tool, I'd prefer it if they avoided colloquial Americanisms and stuck to the correct grammatical form, since to do otherwise will not exactly be helpful to users outside of the US borders. Thus if I am being shown how to fly an aeroplane in that sim, I would hope that it is by someone who has as adequate a command of the English language as they do of the aircraft's controls. Now it is true that one should always endeavour to use the language of the people you are trying to connect with, which is one of the basic tenets of good, communicative writing, but that being so, unless Flight is aimed purely at poorly educated ten year olds who see nothing wrong with using language incorrectly when engaging in professional activities, then I think it would be worth the effort for MS to raise the bar a bit. Call me picky if you like, but that's the way it is.Back on topic however, I do think the shadows in that video are a vast improvement, that's why it's so fun.Al

In the video the voice is of the flight instructor. It is possible the teacher and student are having an informal conversation, and therefore her comment seems in character, proper English or not.

That's true of course, but since it is a scripted creation and not a real event, they have a choice to make the person in that cut scene someone who can actually speak using correct English, so why not do so? Especially important when that video is effectively a promo. I know lots of people will think otherwise and be of the opinion that I'm being picky, and they are free to do so if they like, but to me, it nevertheless smacks of tardiness by MS in terms of marketing, which is a bad thing on something that is evidently supposed to impress us.As I say, anyone can feel free to disagree if they like, I'm not going to break my heart over it.Al

As long as they refrain from improper pronoun usage, such as "Me and..." I'll be happy. LOL.gif I seriously doubt anyone -no matter how poorly educated- would ever say "Me went to the movies." So why on earth would they say "Me and my friends went to the movies?" :(

....., as it is not a grammatically correct form to place the adverb 'so' in front of the word 'fun'.Al
At first, I was a little ticked off at you calling someone a "silly cow" and now I am more ticked off at you for writing that anyone who thinks "It's so fun" is acceptable is an uneducated 10-year old. Some people think that "It's so fun" does not sound right. But it is grammatically correct. Since 1846, "fun" has been accepted as an adjective. If you are not a traditionalist who has accepted "fun" as an adjective, there is nothing incorrect about placing adverbs in front of adjectives. There are numerous uses of "so" that precede adjectives: "It's so lovely." "It's so gross." "It's so bad." Since you are so worried that someone like me works as an editor, I cannot resist finding more errors with your writing. In your explanation, I see several instances in which your writing is not grammatical. "I regard the forum as an informal conversational environment and write in such an appropriate informal fashion, thus I don't ever pull anyone up on a forum for doing similar,"It should not be "similar," but “similarly” because it is an adverb."Microsoft is a professional company and they are"Here you are switching from singular to plural in the same sentence. It should be “Microsoft is a professional company and is”"….one would assume that in employing someone to do voiceovers..."There should be a comma after “that” because it is a parenthetical phrase."Fun can be a noun, e.g. when describing a thing which provides amusement"It should be “that” instead of “which.” (Use "that" with restrictive clauses) "…there is no point in getting upset about it, because it is the way it is in that country"There should be no comma before “because.”

Al,I do realize your earlier comment of silly cow was not directed at me and I should not have corrected you.I am sorry.Frank.

post needs "Cliffs Notes"   :(

Of course one is so posh here in England, one actually says: 'one is orf to the cinema'And with regard to all the above corrections (some of which are actually incorrect by the way, I'll leave you to work out which ones they are), as I've already once pointed out in relation to talking about the difference between forum chat and professional products, I don't worry too much about that kind of thing on forums, or 'fora' if you prefer since we're being picky lolAl

'It's so fun' is probably something that's come from the same parentage as....'Do the Math', when it should be 'Do the Maths' or even 'Do the arithmetic''I could care less' when actually meaning 'I couldn't care less'It appears to be a change in the way some people say things, usually Americans it appears, and it looks like it's here to stay.

I see the pedants are out in force. H W Fowler and hid brother wrote wrote The King's English in 1906. He later wrote a Dictionary of Modern Usage in the 1930s. It was re-printed many times. A second edition, Fowler’s Modern English Usage, published in 1965, was lightly revised by Sir Ernest Gowers. The third edition was published as The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage in 1996, and revised as Fowler’s Modern English Usage in 2004.Fowler said: "me is technically wrong in It wasn't me etc.; but the phrase being of its very nature colloquial, such a lapse is of no importance".

'Do the Math', when it should be 'Do the Maths' or even 'Do the arithmetic'
It's funny, I always raise an eyebrow when someone says,‘maths'But both are correct...informal for Mathematics. The one you use is just an indication of where you're from :biggrin:Maybe ‘Do the math’ is an American expression…imported to the UK.That would explain the discrepancy. And folks there kept saying ‘math’, even though regionally it should be 'maths'.hehe...I'm so far off topic :(

Yup, of course when there is little to actually discuss since all we have is a short video clip which looks rather a lot like FSX with some better shadows, I guess that's the way it goes. So, here's a question for everyone: When you clicked on the link for the video preview for 'MS Flight', what were you hoping to see?For me it would be a bit less of the clunky FS graphics we've seen for years where airports are concerned and something a bit more believable instead, i.e. some nice grass, maybe which moved with the prop blast from that Stearman, and some more convincing tarmac and trees, perhaps with white and yellow runway markings which looked like they were painted on rather than computer generated. Maybe even some heat haze shimmer coming off the tarmac in the distance. All of that would make me feel more like I'm actually at an airfield and have strolled over to the aircraft rather than loaded it up in a sim.Al

A lot of the stuff that I would like to see in Flight can't really be put into a video, but I would like to see better ATC, weather, get at least around the same fps as in fsx, but hopefully better, and most importantly: Have a good potential for third-party addons!
