Open Clouds is released

Featured Replies

I have noticed something today. When flying at flight level or after climbing thru the clouds I am noticing a strobe flash effect. If I stop the weather updates it stops the flashing. Is this a known bug that can be fixed? I am using FEX for the clouds/sky.Jim
Same here, I just turn off the updates once I reach cruise then enable them again 50 or so miles from the destination. It doesnt do it all the time so I never reported it.

Yeah I see the same thing here as well. Hopefully Dave can work out a way to eliminate that flash while keeping the updates going!

Dave, FYI the flashes are about 1 every second. As the previous poster mentioned, it does not do it all the time.Jim

The flashing is caused as new metars are loaded into fsx, it's more noticable at higher altitudes. I was trying out all sorts of ideas and built a test app which I stuck on an old machine so I could see the effect on performance.Strangely enough this didn't show any flashing. I suspect we've all been using bojote tweaks and tools for fsx and added the line bufferpools=0 in fsx.cfg. Can I get as many of you as possible to confirm this is what is causing the issue? It sort of makes sense to me that it would do.If I can get you all to confirm this is indeed the issue and take it from there. Cheers.

I don't use any tweaks to my CFG file at all actually.

One problem. When I fly away from an airport the weather gradually disappears to few clouds and good visibility. For example, taking off from Boise with 5NM vis and overcast at 4700. Looks great. When I climb to 8000 I have a beautiful undercast for about 5 minutes. Then it gradually clears up to just a few clouds and great viz. When I get a METAR from Open Clouds it shows overcast at 700 and viz at 2M. Definitely not what is depicted - clear and blue. This is with version 1.08
Are you running another weather engine by any chance?

Hi Dave! The only tweek I am using is: [bUFFERPOOLS]RejectThreshold=98304no other weather engine is in use.Regards, Jim

Not using any of bojote's mods and no other weather generator except the default FSX one.

Thanks for the app. The only issue I've noticed is the visibility. In the US, 10SM is the highest reported value on the ATIS/ASOS/AWOS. So if I use your app I end up getting only 10 miles of vis when clearly it's a lot higher. Somehow default FSX reads this higher value. Flying around with 10mi is not realistic where I live in Northern MN.

I noticed the flashes yesterday as well. It's not happening all of the time, though. Just that time that I ran FSX. I run with all of Bojote's tweaks and then some... ;)

I was flying at low altitudes, no Bojote tweaks (my system is very old) and never saw any flashes. Just reporting.

From what I read anything above 10 miles does not have to be reported and in fact is often reported as 9999. Fsx will interpret this as 100km visibility, I take it as 32 km. Once the visibilty gets over 10 miles it's impossible to know what the visibilty should be using Metars. I take it as 20 so I can build up layers on top and I think looks better visually. Alas it's not a perfect solution.

Flashing issues.Well, I'm struggling on this one. What we know so far. Will happen every 5 minutes as Metars are updated every 2 seconds.Once all Metars that need to be sent have gone then there won't be any more flashes till the next update.Doesn't flash on my near obsolete PCDoes on my high end I7 with bufferpools=0Does on other high end machines without.I don't have a solution or much ideas on this at the moment. If anyone can work out what the issue is I'd be gratefull!

Just a thought... why the every 2 seconds for the merars updates? Why not evry 15 min. like the default FSX does?Jim
