March 21, 201115 yr Gary,Well, I had to try your "fix". All I can say is WOW!!!! Either I did something wrong, or this really works. My FPS pegged out at 39.9 (I have it set at 40). It's so smooth. I feel like I'm watching a movie. My computer has no problems processing this change. What a great tweak. Thank you very much!Mike Franks Mike Franks
March 21, 201115 yr Author Glad it worked for you Mike. It helped my machine as well and i have a decent rig. Here's hoping more people check out this thread and it helps them too and perhaps some of use can find another tweak for good ole FS9 and it will rival any sim out there for performance. Thanks guys.Paul. March 21, 201115 yr CORRECTED Text for my post (#25) above:http://forum.avsim.net/topic/329728-possible-new-tweak-for-fs9/page__view__findpost__p__1947499NOTE: Do NOT 'add' commas to long numbers, and always keep same number of trailing zeroes in decimal places of parameter numbersThe "3 Test Tweaks":[GRAPHICS]DETAIL_TEXTURE=2 // 1 <-- Tweak #1TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=262144 // 256 <-- Tweak #2 (may vary with video card VRAM size in MB)[DISPLAY]TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=25600 // 400 <-- Tweak #3 (may vary with computer hardware speed / configuration)NOTE: For "Tweak #2", try multiplying size of VRAM on video card (ex: 256 MB) x 1024 to get this "test" parameter valueThe calculation to test would be VRAM (MB) of 1536 x 1024 = 1572864; again, this may vary as stated above, so test different MB VRAM amounts with your system to see if a pattern emerges for your particular BIOS, hardware, driver, and FS.Cfg configuration.FYI: This info is related to optimizing performance to compensate for a Terrain.Cfg that may impact the FS9 rendering engine... as "hmar" alluded to in his post #13:http://forum.avsim.net/topic/329728-possible-new-tweak-for-fs9/page__view__findpost__p__1945971.BTW: Perhaps some some forum readers here may recall that not only [FS install path]\Terrain.Cfg, but also [FS install path]\Autogen\default.xml Autogen definition files both have a significant impact on FS9's rendering engine performance. Some used to either edit default.xml to disable some Autogen 3D and 2D vector objects; others disabled it entirely by renaming it so FS couldn't find / load definitions inside that file.FYI: This autogen editing/tweaking process still works in FSX, although differently via xml compilation into a *.spb file format. Now that most of us have more capable computers, we can begin considering how to tweak multiple system parameters to optimize FS9 for better performance than we could years ago when we had much less capable computers.Hopefully these ideas may stimulate more inquiry for tweaking FS9 as well as FSX; perhaps ******* Altuve (aka "bojote") might be interested in looking into these possibilities as well ?Hope this helps ! B) GaryGBThanks for posting! :( After, a weekend of trying :( to get fsx to stop shuttering ....I went right back to good ole fs9. :( Even with so many tweaks and so fourth my B) i7 980x was brought down to its knees with fsx in even default large airports. So now with fs9 running even better and super smooth (everywhere in the sim)with this tweak you posted ,fsx is deleted once again.
March 21, 201115 yr Thank you GaryGB for the tweak. I tried it and I see a improvment in my FS9. Overall my graphics are much sharper and my framerates have gone up (although my framerates were pretty good before this tweak). When I flew in the mountains I had blurry mountains and the sharpness "popped" back on as I flew along. With this tweak I have not seen any blurry textures in the mountains at all.
March 21, 201115 yr The "3 Test Tweaks":[GRAPHICS]DETAIL_TEXTURE=2 // 1 <-- Tweak #1TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=262144 // 256 <-- Tweak #2 (may vary with video card VRAM size in MB)[DISPLAY]TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=25600 // 400 <-- Tweak #3 (may vary with computer hardware speed / configuration) Hi,Tweak #2 is by multiply the VRAM of VGA,so mine has 512,it will be 512x1024=524288How about the third Tweak? March 21, 201115 yr After so many years and experience with FS9, I thought I had tweaked it all. Well, after doing this scenery.cfg tweak, I saw MASSIVE improvement in the clarity of the textures around me. It is like flying in a different sim. I also did the fs9.cfg tweaks too though, so I don't know which one of the two helped more. I already had tweaked fs9.cfg but these ones have different numbers and helped immensely. I'm not too sure about fps performance though, I think I might have a small impact in FPS, but I'll have to test more and report. I'm advertising this thread to the HvACC forum immediately You guys rock, FS9 is more alive than ever :(
March 21, 201115 yr Regarding the FS9.cfg tweak, once you go into the FS SETTINGs screen 2 of the 3 tweaks are undone. JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
March 21, 201115 yr i dont have a defaulttexturecount line in my terrain cfg.? do i have to manually add it? Intel I7 12700KF / 32 GB Ram-3600mhz / Windows 11 - 64 bit / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060TI / 32" Acer Monitor, Honeycomb alpha/bravo, CH rudder pedals, Tobii 5, Buttkicker, Logitech radio panel.
March 21, 201115 yr Author Gerry (flyingpilot212121) you should have that line in your terrain.cfg - it should be right at the very top?The line should read DefaultTextureCount=238, for the original default valueIf not have you searched for it through the whole file using the search function in notepad for example? You weren't by accident, in one of the other config files but indeed in the terrain.cfg file in your main FS9 directory?Paul. March 21, 201115 yr Weird, Just did a quick circuit and didnt really notice any change at all, Ill leave it like that for now and see if I can notice anything in my fs travels. March 22, 201115 yr Hi,Start with 40. Some believe this value has no effect in FS.IIRC, 40 was a commonly recommended "TML" max for FSX; the commonly recommended max for FS9 is "usually" 400 (except herein). :( Seeing is believing... have you tested these tweaks in FS9 yet ? :( BTW: This set of tweaks has not been tested with high speed, long duration flights with highly complex (ex: "Heavy") aircraft / FMCs / gauge sets, AI traffic, ...or complex add-on weather apps; more feedback from such configurations would also be very helpful to building the FS9 community knowledge base. :( FYI: When FS exits, it resets the TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD (aka "TML") value back to a minimal default if anything is changed via the FS in flight menu; be sure to manually restore it if further testing or use of the Tweak #3 calculated "long number" value is desired (one can also run FS9 with FS9.Cfg opened in NotePad to "lock" it from being over-written).PS: Remember... do NOT insert commas or decimal points (European "period" symbol)... just use the numeric strings as is.You guys are off to such a good start already, I may just post some more of my "dozen" FS9 tweaks to this forum sometime soon ! GaryGB
March 22, 201115 yr Gary,I just checked my FS9.cfg and terrian.cfg. All the changes I made are still there. Nothing reset. When I tested these tweaks last night, and got my phenominal results, I was flying from KSEA (FlyTampa) to KSFO (Imaginesim) in my WILCO 737-400. AI traffic was at 100% and the flight lasted 1:37 minutes. No problems, no wierd noises from the graphic card trying to keep up and NO CTDs. Overall, everything went well. I can't complain with 39.9 FPS out of 40.0 FPS. I'll try some longer flights and let you know.I can't wait to try your other tweaks.Mike Mike Franks
