December 18, 201114 yr Btw Activesky can do Overcast if your setup for it. Try this. When your at cruise with overcast conditions move your autogen slider to the far left to turn it off. You can't see any autogen at cruise anyway. It will give you enough frames back that you can increase FSX cloud draw to 110 nm. Set Activesky 2012 maximum upper visibility to 120 nm, and leave Surface at 60 nm. If there is heavy overcast your not gonna see the ground at all. Way I have mine is if there is overcast there is a carpet of clouds under me stretching to beyond as far as I can see in FSX.If it happens could you pls post 2-3 overcast screenshots ?Thanks in advance
December 18, 201114 yr Author So the advantage you feel, is having a weather engine and texture generator in one package.Personally, I use the REX weather engine and textures. So one package! And with the new "FREE" REX update, and claimed weather engine updates, the claim that ASE has a better weather engine, may turn out to be no longer valid. The improvements to the REX weather engine and textures seem many. I'm still a fan of REX mate, make no mistake & I will check out the new update. I'm not trying to convert you or anyone else. Don't know why people get so up tight about who's using what & wheather it's better. I'm certainly not putting you or anyone else down who don't want the new program. I've made many mistakes in the past with unnessary purcheses & it could well be that the REX uodate will prove to be better. If it is, I'll go back to it. 40 euro's is no issue for me but I realise that it is for some. I like to buy & try that's all. There is another point here, those of us who can spend or choose to spend on these add-ons help to push the developers into further improvements which is a benefit to all who support the hobby, after all that's how REX came to be. I understand your point & respect it, you wont be alone that's for sure but let's remember, it's just your point not mine. When MS Flight is released, I'll have that too, Then we will hear the same remarks as the one you left here no doubt! Mike Summers
December 18, 201114 yr Huh, I haven't got uptight.I'm just pointing out that ASE may no longer hold the crown of best weather engine, after the REX update. And thus one package to serve both functions.I think you must have read the wrong post.I also didn't imply you were trying to convert anyone.I think you misunderstood. Must be Christmas stress.
December 18, 201114 yr I used REX textures + ASE for the weather before. Based on the comments I've read, I purchased AS 2012 and I'm glad I did. Installed the 1024 textures and my NGX flies as smooth as before, but the immersion has become awesome. Great job, Damien and Chris.Just my 2 cents.jos denis
December 18, 201114 yr This is the only themes I have tried, I changed the runway lights to another theme, they seem brighter, but not yet tested in low vis. This is a flight down the West side of the Seattle area. Sun rising to the East, you can see Mt. Rainer and then setting to the West over the Olympic National Park. 10/10 for AS2012, there is so much more to offer, just need to balance the pc vs wife time! -Iain Watson-
December 18, 201114 yr Do the weather engine improvements work together with squawkbox downloaded weather? December 18, 201114 yr Geez! They look great.I'm sat here shaking my head thinking...."I just bought REX at the discounted price and have not even tried it out!"So....the question is...Will REX have an answer to this or do I just give in to the fact that I may have wasted 18 Euros? Richie Lumsden
December 18, 201114 yr Well u can use your rex textures alongside as2012 ones broadening your textures, as for the engine, well AS is the best imo. Chris Howard
December 18, 201114 yr Thanks to all reporting reviews and screenshots.Last question pls, is there a visible difference bewteen ASE 2012 4096 clouds against 2048 or 1024 ?I mean, it seems pretty much no one can play ASE 2012 at maximum power while REX 2 can play 4096 clouds with no particular FPS issue. That is just a question ,thanks !
December 18, 201114 yr A word of advise for those PDMG drivers worried about light replacements from various texture sources including REX, FEX, AS, etc... You should always, always, keep a handy backup copy of the original FSX spotlight.bmp and halo.bmp files found in the main texture folder. Find a copy of the originals and lock them to read-only if you are really concerned about landing light intensities and so forth. This another one of those basic principal routines you learn and develop over the years as a FS enthusiast. Now where's my egg nog... That's good advice!Looking in the Graphics Logs in AS 2012 I noticed what light files are replaced (if you choose so) and these are:halo.bmp which corresponds to the runway lightsfx_2.bmp which corresponds to the a/c strobe lightsspotlight.bmp which corresponds to the a/c landing (and taxi?) lightsHowever like someone else already pointed out I don't think having these files replaced by AS 2012 (or any other texture replacement program) actually is a problem when it comes to the NGX since it uses it's own built-in lights. This is confirmed by looking under the LIGHTS section in the aircraft.cfg where you will only find two entries and none of them has anything to do with strobe/landing/taxi lights as far as I can tell. However I will still restore these files from my backup since I don't like when these files are replaced since that is known to give you trouble in some cases and with some a/c.I hope the files I have in my backup indeed is the FSX SP2 original files because my FSX installation is rather old by now, would be great if someone who is 100% certain they have the FSX SP2 original files could post the dates and sizes of these files mentioned above.

December 18, 201114 yr I'm downloading right now and I'm excited to see the results... Not to beat a dead horse, but ASE may be the ticket to getting a "realistic" weather radar in "various add-on planes" (read NGX)... Assuming that the X gauge graphics represent what is seen on screen...Ok, ok, I just did it as well hoping now that I didn't make a fault. Regards,Axel
