yea i got rex and ase at the moment and still havnt seen any better pics from as2012 that are better than rex textures and when the rex essential update which is "free " will make it even better still in the weather engine whcih at the moment rex lacks . So iam still stciking with rex and people talking about the time difference what say 3 to 4 minute quicker not going to make that much difference

I haven't tried using DXT textures yet, how much FPS extra does that give you compared to the 32-bit textures?
its much smoother mate.Quesiton to all,, my night time clouds look awful, day time absolutley fine. anyone?

DXT5 Clouds and DXT1 Runways and Water instead of 32-bit HD.
what does it mean DXT1 / DXT5 textures?is it a DirectX 9/10 thing?could you shed some light on this one?

Tried the DXT textures now but honestly I didn't see much of a difference for smoothness nor IQ so I'll stick with the default 32-bit textures for now I think.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it has anything to do with DirectX version, they are only different type of compression methods for textures where DXT textures are known to give you somewhat better performance at the cost of somewhat lover image quality compared to 32-bit textures.

Hehe - with your rig I'd suppose you wouldn't see the difference between alot of FPS and alot more FPS ;)Mas

If you have a good system (4.0 ghz or better) and you already have good FPS your probably not going to notice a big difference. I am on a quad core at 3.0 ghz so It was very noticeable to me.Example: With the Bell Helicopter I was able to max out every FSX slider to the right (Except Traffic which was off) and still get a decent 22-24 fps while flying around LatinVFR Sangster - MKJS. I was even able to takeoff from there in the NGX with all the sliders maxed and using 2d-panel view, although it was slightly choppy at 14 fps. However this would have been impossible with 32-bit.

Can't wait to see the DXT results on my rig... But I must say that the PMDG is a GOD when it comes to FPS. I'm flying in Aerosofts ENGM, ENVA, ENZV and Cloud 9s ENBR (all Norway) with AS2012... Sliders are all on the right side (not all the way, but pretty much) Oslo is really a hard one, but flyable, while the other airports are smooth, with Cloud9s Bergen being just superb... Just flew the new Wilco 737 Evo to same destinations (1st and LAST time), and even though that piece of **** looks pre 2004, it still is more heavy on the FPS than the NGX.. Just an amazing job PMDG!Mas

:wink:Well...I guess you're right my rig is still pretty good although there are faster systems out there today and I can't set everything to max but prefer to only set the settings that really matters to max and instead strive for always having the best possible performance because flying in a "slide show" spoils pretty much everything no matter how good it looks.Speaking about performance and hardware...what I really hope for is that MS Flight will be the first FS version where your hardware actually is used the way it's supposed to...

It will indeed be very interesting to follow Flight in 2012... Especially to see how porting add-ons over..See you in Scandinavia mate!*Mas

Been flying FS since the BBC Micro Version !!

I own both REX and ASE and am a bit confused whether the additional 40 Euros for AS2012 is really worth it, especially considering the FREE update that's about to come:http://www.realenvir...-rex-essential/I mean how much better can the AS2012 textures be than the REX ones to justify this amount? Or will the weather engine be so much improved that will really make a difference?Since now I've never had any problems as I used REX for texture and ASE for weather, but now I'm totally confused. Money doesn't fall from the sky and I really don't want to spend 40 Euros for something that won't make any simming difference or I might not use whatsoever.Any ideas or recommendations are appreciated.
Is it possible to use REX and AS2012 at the same time? I think I'll pick up REX since it's only $20 right now, and maybe AS2012 later. That free update you talked about there seems promising.

I know some have asked for screenshots showing overcast conditions in AS 2012 and I'm currently enroute EGLL-ESSA and took these screenshots and though I should share them with you, pretty good I think and this is with the cloud_coverage_density set to 12 instead of the default 8.

Thanks for sharing mate, much appreciated. The " density 12 " tweak seems to be effective also within REX but the final REX result will come once the upcoming upgrade will be released.I see a good battle between REX upgraded vs ASE2012.

It´s still a lot of cumulus clouds. There´s nothing new about this, could be done already in As6.5 and I can´t see any diffr.in those cloud texture either, to what I have in AES.I will wait for the release of the new REX instead. They said they have solved that probs with OVC in FSX./ Leffe
