December 21, 201114 yr If you want to change that behavior, there is a setting in FSX.cfg called CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY which the sliders set between one and eight. Set it to 12 if you want a decent overcast, but remember that any other change to the cfg file will reset it to a max of eight. The tip to set in the fsx.cfg "CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12" is amazing for overcast sky.I just flew "EDDM Munchen --> LOWI Innsbruck" and the Sky was so overcast , I couldn't see s***t. I was in clouds all around methe Sky was literally gray, no gaps or hardly any between clouds.the feeling was really like you fly in a snow storm (it was snowy).I had to be with my terrain Radar all the time not letting my eyes off it or I wouldn't come out in one piece, it was so cloudy and foggy I couldn't see the terrain. My god that was the most amazing flight I ever had (very challenging hand flying this route with the NGX - from takeoff to landing).that is the way to go.IMO the settings is a must have.just note that the settings of 12 does have some impact on the FPS, but for me it's worth it.Paul, thanks a million for this tip, it is the most amazing settings ever. December 22, 201114 yr The tip to set in the fsx.cfg "CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12" is amazing for overcast sky. It's amazing how much difference this setting makes, everyone should try it. FS2024 • PMDG 738, 77F • FSL A321 • A2A Comanche, Aerostar • BS Baron, Bonanza, Caravan Pro • JF Tomahawk • TAOG H500C BeyondATC • GSX Pro • ChasePlane & Flow Pro • TDS GTNXi • FSUIPC • AutoFPS • RealTurb 9800X3D B650E • ROG OC RTX 5090 • 64GB DDR5-6000 • VKB Gladiator, STECS, T-Rudder • Tobii 5 • ISP 1 Gbps
December 22, 201114 yr I tried this but I thought the FPS hit was rather huge but will try it again, did you guys also change any other settings like cloud draw distance?
December 22, 201114 yr No, I kept my cloud draw distance in FSX set to 70 and upper visibility distance in AS set to 60.I haven't tested FPS impact but my machine didn't complain and it's the closest I've got to having overcast in FSX.I use 2048 clouds btw. December 22, 201114 yr It's amazing how much difference this setting makes, everyone should try it.Yeah i applied this tweak yesterday and it does make a huge difference, i got lovely overcast with no gaps. Chris Howard
December 22, 201114 yr I have a REX question. I have no addon scenery except 2 FlyTampa airports. So I am not familiar witht hese scenery addons. I went to the REX site and really don' see the improvements in the default scenery vs the pictures posted on their site. Am I missing something? I know it is hard to quantify improvement, but how much would REX improve my overall scenery? I have a high end computer - so am I under utilizing it with no extra scenery? Paul Gugliotta
December 22, 201114 yr Rex isn't a scenery add on as such. Its speciality is in how it makes the sky look better. If you haven't got any decent scenery packages yet, then treat yourself this christmas as they as they significantly improve your flight sim experience. Paul Smith.

December 22, 201114 yr I tried this but I thought the FPS hit was rather huge but will try it again, did you guys also change any other settings like cloud draw distance?it did have a quite FPS hit , to compensate this I reduced my clouds resolution from 4096 to 1024.I prefer a bit less cloud resolution but having nice overcast sky at a stormy day , then having higher resolution clouds without them being reflected/used at a stormy day. December 22, 201114 yr About the cloud density=12 tweak.I've read a couple of pages back, that doing anything to the sliders in FSX (like setting cloud draw distance up or down) will set the value back to 8 immediately. Is that correct? When passing FL100 climbing, I always set Autogen to minimum and then set Cloud draw distance to maximum, and then vice vera passing FL100 descending. This would reset the tweak to 8 i presume?Mas Martin Jensen

I think that would prevent the value from being reset. Give it a try and let us know if it works. Paul Smith.

This would reset the tweak to 8 i presume?AFAIK FSX writes changes to fsx.cfg at exit. So I guess You only have to manually change the settings prior to launching fsx.exe.The easiest way to check it (if it is resetting right after manipulating any of the slider or at ext) is setting huge amount of LOD_Radius (which also reverts to no more than 4.5) before launching app, then change any other slider in graphics section and check the results Bartłomiej Ender

The basics (I mean "CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12") are the same for me but I did not have any success even with cloud layers set to maximum (20). BTW, I'm using 2048 textures. Regards,Axel
