shoot.. should've thought dual booting. right after I read your reply immediately browsed for hours. Though using 2OS in one physical disk is not even close to a complete solution in this case yet at least my windows 7 is usable and worth for something thus I can learn it more from time to time.Is installing 2 OS will cause instability? I know the answer is not short, just need an input if there's a well known issue related to this, especially running fs9 with xp and windows 7 in the other drivethanx
I have winxp 32 bit on one drive win7 64 on the other. Everytime I boot up I get a menu to select the operating system. Never had any issues but had to reinstall xp due to a virus :( so only have FS running on Win7 now.Strange so many people prefer xp32 bit over here. I bet the answers would be completely different on the FSX forum.

You would be hard pressed to efficiently run FSX with XP32... As the OOM error highlighted you can be hard pressed to run FS9 on XP32 with high memory consumption add-ons...I am surprised at the negative sentiment to Win 7 though... The ONLY thing I still run XP for is FS9, can't think of anything else that doesn't run better on Win7 and you are automatically giving up ANY DX10 game or sim (take FS out of the picture)I agree XP is still the king for FS9 but for everything else i would take win7 in a heartbeat and I have access to both here in the house... I dread having to install HW in XP now compared to W7! Just so many pro's to Win 7 over XP outside of FS9 or other legacy games/apps/sims...

Have a Wonderful Day

Still on XP 32 too, with the 3GB switch and never got any OOMs since then...Everything working like a charm and beautifully, HD textures etc...

Still on XP 32 as well.(also still using Windows 2000 and Ubuntu on my older systems :( LOL.gif!)Haven't felt any pressing need to completely move to Win 7 yet.

Now I feel a bit stupid leaving so many longtime mates on to the W7 side.... shame.gif

Ah, don't feel too bad; I'm so happy with my Win 7 64 install and FS9's performance that I'm keeping my old E8500 system for yet another year.

just upgrade to 64 its what i got :)

Still using XP Pro 64 bits for FS9 ...I have too much trouble with FS9 on W7 64 : Wilco A320/330/340 CTD , Wilco B777 CTD, XP reality gauges crashing, black screen when switching from FullScreen to windowed ... etc ) With XP Pro 64 bits, everything is smooth like silk, no OOM (8 GB memory), all drivers available (NVidia 290.53)For FSX, it's another story, but I prefer also to run it on XP 64...FSX is DirectX 9.0c so DirectX 11 is not necessary. UAC , access limitations, and all these useless services (67 on my W7 Ultimate version) are not useful for a simulation machine. Now, (/Basic mode on)IF Flight will use DirectX 10 (11 ?)OR IF Prepar3D V2.0 appears like a viable substitutionOR IF I switch to X-Plane 10 (cool, I'm joking Angel.gif )THEN , maybe I'll multi-boot XP64 and W7 64 Ultimate(/basic mode off)Anyway, the thread was about XP32, so I must be the only one to use XP 64 :Praying:Happy FlyingsPierre LFBE

UAC, access limitations, those can be turned off as far as i know. What I like about windows 7 is its ability to allocate more memory, but I'll probably stick with xp for the next couple of months. Btw, what kind of trouble you are having with wilco airbus?

The ability to allocate more memory is inherent to 64 bits OS. XP pro x64 edition have the same ability.About Wilco airbus (version 1) in W7-64 : exiting FS9 = ntdll.dll error Wilco Airbus (version Evolution) : CTD on airbusXXX.gau ( Reality XP weather radar is not certified on W7-64)Wilco B777 : exiting FS9 = ntdll.dll error In this case, ntdll.dll error is not linked to nvidia driver version, I've tried all versions from 192.xx to 290.53, same result. It's not a fatal error, FS 9 exits completely but with an alert requester (send report ... etc). But it's boring to have this each time you flight. WXP 64bits doesn't crash, doesn't alert, so, for me, it's a better option.Happy New Year to all.Pierre LFBE

WinXP Pro 32bit +FS9 here. I will have a total upgrade when I move to a new sim. So far this new sim doesn't exist for me yet. Before that my FS PC is a fully dedicated and functional system, all based on the good old XP.

Thank you for the reply. I will definitely dig some more info about winxp 64. If it has the same ability as win 7 64 handling OOM, why on earth its not as popular as win 7 for simmers?ntdll.dll error you mentioned; what Graphic Card you use? I dont know if this helps, but are you sure you've tried all drivers between 192.**- to current? Because 258.62 should work well.

Joking aside, Windows 98 is out of the picture because Microsoft no longer provide security and other important updates for it and those desperate enough to continue using it will be exposed to all sorts of things. Most, if not all, Antivirus developers no longer make their software compatible with it too.As more and more new versions of Windows come along, the same issue will affect XP too. Microsoft have alread discontinued thier XP support service and have, I believe, given a date for discontinuing updates. That point is where heads will have to be pulled out of the sand by those who (like me) are perfectly happy with XP.John
