March 8, 201214 yr I don't tend to trust news regarding graphics cards, but this actually seemed to be written in a believable fashion... regardless, I think I'll wait for GK110 to launch later this year! First, and most interesting: with some models of the GeForce 600, NVIDIA will introduce a load-based clock speed-boost feature (think: IntelTurboBoost), which steps up clock speeds of the graphics card when subjected to heavy loads. If there's a particularly stressing 3D scene for the GPU to render, it overclocks itself, and sees the scene through. This ensures higher minimum and average frame-rates.Second, you probably already know this, but GK104 does indeed feature 1,536 CUDA cores, which lend it a strong number-crunching muscle that helps with shading, post-processing, and GPGPU. Third, the many-fold increase in CUDA cores doesn't necessarily amount to a linear increase in performance, when compared to the previous generation. The GeForce GTX 680 is about 10% faster than Radeon HD 7970, in Battlefield 3. In the same comparison, the GTX 680 is slower than HD 7970 at 3DMark 11. Fourth, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 will very much launch in this month. It won't exactly be a paper-launch, small quantities will be available for purchase, and only through select AIC partners. Quantities will pick up in later months. Fifth, there's talk of GK107, a mid-range GPU based on the Kepler architecture, being launched in April. March 8, 201214 yr I'll wait, but I know I'll end up with a 660. I've never been able to pull the trigger on the higher tier cards. Interesting stuff, though. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
March 9, 201214 yr Surely we are getting to the point where, with FSX at least, the benefits just aren't worth shelling out for a new/next gen GPU?My GTX570 is barely ticking over when running FSX maxed and I am sure a GTX285 and lower would do easily as well...Of course it is always potentially beneficial for other current and upcoming games to invest in a snazzy new graphics card, but it does seem that releases that really benefit from a high-end GPU are few and far between these days... Cheers! Iain
March 9, 201214 yr HelloFor the first time ever in my simming career I do not feel the need to upgrade.I only fly FSX and with all my addons my current machine is running everything very well.FSX is looking like it will be my platform for years to come, so flight simulation might turn into a relatively cheap hobby for a change. My plan going forward is to purchase a European airport per month and an aircraft every three months or so.And spend more time in the garden instead of on here.
March 9, 201214 yr I'll wait, but I know I'll end up with a 660. I've never been able to pull the trigger on the higher tier cards. Interesting stuff, though.I am going for the same thing. I was going for a GTX580, but since these are right around the corner, I decided to hold onto my cash for an extra month. Also, the 660 will likely outperform the GTX580 1.5GB in certain applications. The 660 will likely run alot cooler and provide much better performance per watt. All of these great features come in only around 320US Dollars.
March 9, 201214 yr I am anxious to know one thing... ie. Does this card 680 provide for more than 2 monitors from one card? Or are they still behind ATI in this regard?I looked everywhere and there is no information I can find on this issue. Hmmm...Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter

Hmmm...MannyGood question Manny, I have been waiting for Nvidia to quit teasing and stalling and put out a real spec sheet so we can find out, the leaked likely fake specs with just 2GB of VRAM doesn't look good for 3 monitor support with AA.Still I remain hopeful that Nvidia decides to compete with ATI on 3 monitor support, but the lack of info about it speaks volumes I think. --John near KPAE
March 10, 201214 yr Author I agree with ALL of the comments above, but I'm not 100% sure whether or not these new cards will actually run cooler. While the performance per watt may be better, the # of stream processors is three times that of the 580. I haven't been doing much FSX recently as I finished school and became a real person, so I'm content to hold on to this GTS250 for some time yet. I had originally planned to pick up a really nice card this year, but I'm preparing to buy a new bike, so that's not going to be happening. I'll be happy to get a GTX560 equivalent.Nice sunglasses, Stephen! March 10, 201214 yr "I am anxious to know one thing... ie. Does this card 680 provide for more than 2 monitors from one card? Or are they still behind ATI in this regard?"Me too, great question or should I just go the Matrox route now? Thanks RH
March 15, 201214 yr From what I am gathering ...nvidia is not fixing the more than 2 monitors in one card. On the few card images I see, its still two DVI onlyVery dissapointing. So even if you spend the bucks and get two cards in SLI, FSX could suffer because of SLI. Sheesh! Not sure if Matrox could come up with higher resolution solution for this. (three monitors with 1600 x 1200 or 3 X 1920 x 1200) Hmm... Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
March 15, 201214 yr Commercial Member I actually am looking forward to the 680's. That way the 580's will hopefully drop in price so I can pick up a 2nd one, ha!. March 15, 201214 yr For me I will keep hold of my 580 for a long time yet. I've tried too many comparisons showing too few benefits that convinced me that FSX will make further gains from such high end cards. I will spend my money on the dogs b******s processor. March 16, 201214 yr Well the latest leakshttp://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-Kepler-GeForce-GTX680-gpu,15012.htmlSeems to be hinting 3 monitor support: and display outputs of two DL-DVI, a HDMI and Display port 1.2So I am more optimistic now, but it will be better once the real thing is out and in reviewer hands. --John near KPAE
