No, because well with social media you loose the feel of a community. By using Facebook (etc) you also loose the privacy these forums provide because if this forum was based on Facebook I wouldn't want my friends to know when I start a new topic or post a reply. I think forums like these have a lot of life left in them yet.

No - the "wisdom of the crowd" tends towards its lowest common denominator. Even in forums, real wisdom is easily lost in the noise. In social media the noise level far exceeds that of forums.

NO - Most people on here are not 14 year old girls so we don't spend as much time on Facebook or Twitter. We just use them on the side from time to time.

I actually refer to Twitter as "Twatter" so you can probably guess my opinion.....

No.

Like Aaron said, I don't want my friends looking at what topics I post, etc. Most of them don't even know what kind of things I'm into, so Facebook is not a good way to tell them.

That's a great question. I say - No - first because Avsim is social media. Second, for me the difference between Avsim and Facebook is just Avsim has focus. I'm actually an avid Facebook user but I certainly do not want to fully share my enthusiasm for FS with my other friends. It is not that I'm embarrassed...it's that I prefer to talk about general interest topics on FB :Cuppa:

Jerry!...he will kill Independent George!

If Avsim decides to have more hooks into Facebook that seems fine...a bit of crossover won't hurt IMO.

But I'd hope Avsim will always stay independent....I'm sure it will :)

in AVSIM....Go into your 'My Profile' and click on 'Posts'

Look under the 'Posts I've Made' and start copying and pasting your posts from AVSIM into your Facebook or Twitter feed.......People will be like ##### is this guy talking about. :LMAO:

This is why AVSIM is where like-minded people gather. Facebook is where the general population gather and share vacation photo's or pictures of cats licking dogs or something stupid like that.

If it does, you won't be seeing me; I can't stand stuff like facebook and twitter.

nodding-1.gif Thank you for expressing my exact thoughts in a far more gentle way than I would do it if I were to be utterly frank.

Replace, no. Complement, sure. I have a few aviation history groups which I am part of on Facebook that are thriwing and gives as much of a group feel as you get at a web forum like Avsim. But the facebook format can get a bit overwhelming. Information overload, so therefor I really think a forum like avsim has a place in the future also. And as long as there are users with knowledge they are willing to share and people enjoying our great hobby there will always be fresh faces on these forums. :)

No, because forums are associated with specific subjects around which like-minded communities then evolve.

One problem with using social media sites is that work, personal life and hobbies all tend to get blurred together, not everyone wants that. Sites like Facebook have gradually and successively removed almost all the privacy we had when we first joined. Google are following a similar route.

Also, a Facebook page does not offer the organisational and hierarchical structure and tools that professional php or aspx forum does.

No chance :)

I don't "get" sites like Facebook and Twitter .... I would rather spend my time on forums, learning something useful, than adding "friends" to my profile, and bickering over some trivial matter (like millions of people on FB/Twitter do every day!). Life is too short! :)
