I think it adds more clutter to an already cluttered forum.

Seems like it takes up more space too. I mean, look at Tom's first post. There's only two lines of text but the whole message (with all the bits and bobs added on) takes up 70% of my screen space (on a 1920 x 1080 monitor).

I'm afraid I can't say that I like it. I'm with Chris ^ , there's already enough clutter. Should make the hoarders happy though :)

Perhaps if we have to option not to view it, like we have the option not to view signatures, then it'd be a nice feature, but it's just not something that's to everyone's taste....

Hello

I have noticed that the forum staff have started to use this new method of partially obliterating their posts.

Looks like this one is going to be introduced regardless of whether it makes to forums harder to read.

Question to Tom:

Would you pick up and read a book that had the text partially obscured by picture backgrounds ?

If you would, then I congratulate you on your excellent eyesight.

Mine sadly is no longer that great so I guess my daily visits to Avsim will soon have to cease.

Please consider bringing back the Mobile theme for those like myself who just enjoy reading the forum posts and can live without the animated adverts and feature overload.

We're experimenting. Don't jump to conclusions and please stop with the melodramatics; "obliterating"... Come one, why exagerate? And as you will have noted, there are people who do like this feature. So, please give it a break, let us play with it a bit and don't jump to conclusions. There are a LOT of positive reasons for having this capability, whether it is ever used by the normal user or not.

Yup, I like it too! Check out my Balkan Tu-154M!

I've tried to fade the image out as much as possible (in the end I edited it to 30% visible) so that it doesn't interfere with any text going over it.

:p0503: We're playing around and experimenting with this. It's only a bit of fun in the end, please don't get angry :Peace:

A way to block them from being displayed, in the same way that signatures can be blocked, should eliminate any complaints about the feature, I think.

But anyway, if you use a browser supporting Ad Block, just right click the background image and select "Block Image."

This is my image edited to 30% visibility with text all over it. I've checked my posts and think its OK. Let me know if anyone feels it would be better to edit the image to an even lower % visibility.

We're just testing this - don't worry if people really hate it we'll remove them or see about introducing an opt out option for not displaying background images for those who do not wish to see them. Don't jump to conclusions that we're introducing this for all at the forums. Currently only AVSIM staff have access to this feature and we're testing it out - that's all.

TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST! TEST!

I just turned the signatures on and it more than doubled the length of threads.

Why would people want to scroll through so much uselessness.

That's why Tom decided to remove the PC specs, Add-ons and Sim information from signatures; and introduce the new fields in people's profiles:

-My PC's Specifications

-My Simulator

-Things You Need, or Want, to Know About Me

Where they can put all that information and more; and others can see it if they so choose by clicking on the relevant link under the member's avatar

Tatave,

I've removed all the Add-on and PC specs from your signature (it was a lot) as that is no longer allowed (http://forum.avsim.n...-other-changes/) and you've already copied all that information to your '-My PC's Specifications' and '-My Simulator' fields.

I DO find THIS area marginally more difficult to read...

Than THIS area...

test2.jpg

Even though this particular test only reflects a marginal difference... I have to wonder, what's the point?

I've shrunk the image a bit more and edited it so that its now only 15% visible. This is not a forum setting, we edit the watermark image ourselves to increase its fade out..

:p0311:

Point is to test whether the forum's watermark function is usable and if it interferes with the text to such an extent that some people have a hard time reading it; and also what % set of fade out/blending is best to use for watermark images.

.................

Well that will certainly make reading the forums even more difficult.

You can zoom in to read the forums and all on the net: Ctrl+mouse wheel - all the browsers support this now. Hope that makes the forums easer to read for you.

I understand the point of the Test... mine was a more general inquiry, what's the point of the watermarks?

I've seen advice to increase the contrast on one's monitor, and to zoom the text on one's screen... this to read posts that were previously unobscured and perfectly readable without the watermarks?
