What next for Microsoft Flight?

Featured Replies

Why did they close Microsoft Flight when it has only been released for 10 months?

Cant they get another stuido to work on it?

Will anymore contents, bug fixes, or update be release?

What will happen now?

There is no " next" for MS Flight.

I agree, nothing is impossible, but to make something possible you need the will; and it is clear they don’t have it.

Whoever was responsible for closing Flight gave the game/sim less than 5 months chance, and since it didn’t bring the zillion dollars expected revenue during that time period, they pulled the plug.

If I remember correctly, when Aces was closed by MS, was this not suppose to be the end of Flight simming as we know it?....and then Flight........crystal-ball.gif

I don't expect it to be the end of civilian flight sims, but I do expect it to be the end of MS involvement in it for many years. Maybe in 10 years or so...

How come this topic makes me feel like that some of us will one day join together and make a Flight Sim?

Maybe the fine folks at Cascade Game Foundry can hire all of them. The first batch of ex ACES employees can continue with the train sim they've been (allegedly) building for over a year now, and the new batch of ex ACES employees can work on a new Flight Sim.

Many ACES Team members work for LM on P3D.

With Flight finished, we still have FSX (although it is well into its midlife). Conversely, we can migrate to X-Plane, P3d or Flight Gear. All great platforms in their own right, but with different strengths and weaknesses. I think most of us want a simulator that is better rounded and robust, something along the lines of "FSX has a child with Flight". Aerosoft isn't developing a new simulator as far as I know, and other developers like PMDG have said the cost is too prohibitive.

The only choice then, if you choose not to migrate to one of the mentioned solutions is to publicly fund a new simulator. Perhaps by way of Kickstart or by collecting the funds via Tom and crew at Avsim. There are no shortages of unemployed developers and programmers here in the US and abroad. Guys from ACES, Flight, 1C, and on and on. Perhaps it's folly to think that Avsim could head such an effort to create a new simulator, but who better is available-- they are tuned into the community, are well connected, organized, and have the website and forum in place. I know it would be an ambitious project, but it's not like a complete simulator would need to be developed out of the gate. Start with a flight simulator "world", a few planes and then let the community and third parties build it up.

Just my two cents.. and looking forward to hearing any comments from Tom or the community.

Four months ago I would have considered the idea crazy. I never realized (until I discovered these forums) just how much money people were willing to put into a game. Of course, I now realize to them it's a hobby, not a game.

To be honest, Kickstart for such a project may be a viable idea. If a good cost estimate can be made, it's a great way to see just how much support there is in the community.

Just my two cents.. and looking forward to hearing any comments from Tom or the community.

Actually, that is not a new idea.

That is funny! In a sad way, maybe some talented devs could do it. Not here though. Great things come from the unknown.

Don't write off xplane yet.

:) dighost I like the kickstarter idea.

Not because it's so practical, but because it's ambitious.

I’m not sure what an FSX replacement would cost (I could make some guesses)…but it's a good discussion.

Actually, that is not a new idea.

Perhaps it's time to dust it off and put together some folks to study existing options.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
