August 1, 201213 yr The Commodore 64 turns 30 years old today.....So was computing more fun back then or now??? It was definitely a less controversial time back then without the internet and just a few friends having fun in the basement playing Castle Wolfenstein......I miss my C64 Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 1, 201213 yr Loved the C64!!! Had tons of games for it and lots of fond memories Happy birthday C64! Rob
August 1, 201213 yr Moderator C-64 was my first desktop pc as well. Went from an Atari gamming console to the Commodore and though it was the coolest thing at the time. Eventually I moved onto the Amiga and had one or two sims for it and it seemed like a hugh leap from the C-64. I still remember flying sims on both those computers and thinking how I wish the FPS were better, even though I didnt know at the time they were referred to as FPS. I used to wonder if and when sims would look more like they do today. I never would have imagined at that time that in 30 years we would be where we are today. Make me excited to see what the next 30 years will bring in desk top simming. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
August 1, 201213 yr Commercial Member Vic 20 was my first-great times! Same here except for a heathkit one I built in 77. All those pokes and peeks. Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
August 2, 201213 yr Gunship, Project Stealth Fighter, Spitfire 40, Solo Pilot, Dambusters... Not bad for 64k (yes... kilobytes!) of RAM. Those were the days... Mike Dryden
August 2, 201213 yr Commercial Member I was quite partial to "Infiltrator", which was a mix between a flightsim (sorta) and a ground based game. Anyone remember "Jet" by Sublogic? The F18/F16 simulator. Got about 3 frames per second, but it was still very fun. B. York FS2Crew Web Site / FS2Crew Facebook Page / FS2Crew Discord
August 2, 201213 yr Author Anyone remember "Jet" by Sublogic? The F18/F16 simulator. Got about 3 frames per second, but it was still very fun. That one was great....I had that one as well as SubLogic's ATP: Flight Assignment, Many hours lost in the basement with those ones. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
August 2, 201213 yr Commercial Member The BBC's look at how kids today see the C64 30 years on is worth a look -- 'like a PS2' sums it up well. The one thing which they couldn't really begin to grasp, though, is just how scalable this was -- yes, you could think of it as an early games machine, but a lot of people were introduced to computing usingthese machines. I remember finding a C64 mouse(!) in a computer store when I visited a new city back in the early 80s. Although it came with drawing software, it didn't come with 'drivers' as we know them today, so I bought a book on C64 programming to learn how to make my own driver, for GEOS. Took a lot of work, and the mouse never ever got much use in the end, but it taught me a lot about computers. I began my 'career' in design using GeoPublish on the C64, a dreadful desktop publishing program which I left running overnight to paginate a 4-page newsletter. Good times....
August 2, 201213 yr Moderator Wow, ok......now I feel really old. My first "PC" turns 30, I guess that makes me, uhm OLD!! That was a great time back then, I loved when they added the 5 1/4 floppy drive, what a revolution that was compared to the tape. Fort Apocalypse all the way, my favorite C64 game ever. I do believe there was a flightsim for it but I can't remember the game. I do remember how frustrating it was to learn about navigation back then without the internet and google.... Thanks for posting, I'm now gonna have to find me a C64 emulator for Win7 :P Cheers, Pete I9-13900K, RTX 4090, DR5-6000MHZ, CORSAIR ICUE H150I ELITE, ASUS PRIME Z790-P, THERMALTAKE TOUGHPOWER GF3 1350W, WIN 11
August 2, 201213 yr SubLogic's ATP: Flight Assignment was one of my favs also. Sid Myer or something like that. He was a great programmer. Jim CYWG
August 2, 201213 yr I had a Commodore 64 (actually 2) but my first computer was a Commodore PET 2001(Stood for "Personal Electronic Translator"). It was an all in one computer with an attached B&W monitor, had a cassette deck for it's IO device, with a Chicklet Keyboard and PAD. It had a whooping 8KB memory, but I did upgrade to 32KB. It's processor was a 6502 with a speed of 1Mhz  Thanks Tom My Youtube Videos! http://www.youtube.com/user/tf51d
August 2, 201213 yr I remember the C64 well--my first "real" computer after my Timex Sinclair. I had ALL the flight sims and combat sims--all of those already mentioned earlier in this thread ... and many more. :-) subLOGIC's Flight Assignment: ATP was one of my favourites, too, but as far as I know, Sid Maier of Civilization fame wasn't behind it, and by 1990, Bruce Artwick has already left. As much as I love simming in its modern form, I wish that something similar to FA: ATP existed today. Joel Murray @ CYVR (actually, somewhere about halfway between CYNJ and CZBB)
