LED light bulbs that last 25 years....

Featured Replies

A remote-controlled lightbulb -- however did we manage without? :LMAO:

Mind you, I laughed at electric toothbrushes when they first appeared on the market . . .

You should have seen the laughter and poo pooing on some forums when the iPad came out! Fast forward a few years, and......

Watch clubs start hooking these up wirelessly for programable light-shows.

I used to draw schematics for a company that manufactured stage lighting, and one of the projects I worked on was RGB LED's. Basically 1 red, 1 green and 1 blue very bright LED's mounted in a fixture.

This technology was very cool as you could adjust light levels, colour levels. The programming was sequenced to go with whatever the show was, be it a rock concert or Cirque Du Soleil...etc.

Having this technology in the home for under $100 is something I would play around with, especially for Christmas Lighting.

Runway lights to the boudoir!

(And no, I don't know where that came from, either)

What WIFI standard lasts 25 years? How will I control my lightbulb in the mid 2030's?

  • Moderator

That would be expensive to equip an entire house, no matter how long the 'bulbs' last, nor how much energy savings might be...

...aside from which, I'd have to buy a "smartphone" just to control my lights? I'm one of those old "dinosaurs" who actually uses his cellphone only to talk...

...as odd as that might seem. :db:

And if it fails after only 20 years will the company selling it still be around to make a refund?

Well you could say that about just about any "lifetime warranty" ever made. Twenty tears is at least a tiny bit more realistic.

In Hawaii the LEDs are great and cut the bills down considerably and the pay off is quick.

In central Washington the electricity is dirt cheap from all our dams and the payoff is a long ways away.

I have switched everything I can to LEDs though and haven't looked back. I love the ability to choose a wide array of colors and effects, the savings are a nice benefit.

This is true and same goes for NZ or any other Pacific Island. Power is expensive in these parts. Continental USA is a very different story as energy is still cheap (for now).

I'm also a dinosaur re mobile phones - I've still got my 'Brick' as my daughters call it - but I have tried to upgrade my lighting. So far I've got eight LED lamps in daily use, of which one has already failed - it went 'Pop' a few months ago, after less than 2 years' use.

I'm hoping that it was a 'one-off'. The others appear to be ok after 3 years or so. I suppse I must have saved quite a tidy sum off my lighting bill. I must try and work out when I shall break even...

I've spent a total of £255 so far. Now where's that calculator....

If lights start lasting too much longer than that, they might start getting handed down as family heirlooms!

I can see it now, newlyweds getting a full set of eternity-bulbs to symbolize hopes for the length of the marriage.....

Well, I do have a small LG UX345 "flip-phone" that has a built in camera, but since there's no way to transfer the pictures to a computer, it's fairly useless.

I have replaced most of the lights in my house to the compact fluorescent type, none of which have failed over the past three years, so I am getting some savings.
