I saw this thread earlier today and unfortunately I couldn't respond. Now that I can, all I have to say is this violence is being escalated not due to loose gun controls. It's being escalated by the national media which is seizing on every incident as a way to splash headlines, front and center, for all to see. Those driven to inflict mass violence in public crave this attention. They want to go out in a blaze of glory. I've said we need to work on mental well being, especially early on in schools. But we also need to work on the national media, to work on the national media's sponsors--to get them to understand that they are not helping the situation by making the perpetrators of these crimes the star of the show.

 

Does anyone agree with this, or does anyone see a need for the national media to keep things status quo?

Ofcourse someone has to bring up politics... Fail. Topic is about a shooting in schools not someone "tryin' to take yer gunz". There is a news network FAR more biased that will make stuff up on the fly and lie about it.

 

Back on topic:

I am from the inner city and I know the causes there for shootings. For these copycat school shottings I have no idea what is precipitating them. It's really sad.

I said nothing about anyone trying to take anybody's guns. I'm saying the media chooses to blow an incident out of proportion if it suits their agenda. This incident had nothing to do with a school related situation. As said before---two fools ripping at each other and it just happened to be on campus. End of story.

I certainly agree. I've done searches for "mass shootings" and such, and one thing struck me from looking at the data. There are very few reports earlier than 30 years ago. Now, this may just be a lack of data, but 30 years ago is a peculiar place to draw the line. That's when CNN started broadcasting (or cable-casting) and the 24-hour news cycle began.

 

Sandy Hook dominated the news for 2 weeks. This certainly gets into the heads of the kind of deranged individuals that do this sort of thing. The media may be doing more than just over-reporting this phenomenon. They may be creating it.

I think that's a massive part of it that needs to be looked at but no-one will talk about the elephant in the room.

I feel sure that this has been mentioned to the media. Their non-response is your answer. Gotta get that big news story out front. No worries about the effect on the public.

Did any of you guys hear about that conspiracy that entire shooting at sandy hook shooting was all by actors? Apparently, they can't even turn up any dead bodies. And apparently all of the people inside the building at the time were "Actors". The entire thing was all a plot to encourage the ban of guns!

Remember this story made world headline news and people didn't read the story, or read the facts and went into the typical stereotypes.

 

When I got to work yesterday I was faced with the usual onslaught of 'oh those Americans and their guns' as people I work with thought this was another mass shooting at a school. It wasn't until the afternoon came and one of our customers from Texas had to set my colleagues straight. I just didn't have the energy yesterday to debate American Gun Laws with people from New Zealand.

 

So yes the media did really overblown this one and it is really annoying when that happens.

Anyone else notice how this quickly went from CNN Breaking News with Live Blog full of updates to regular story as details came out? Not surprising, by any means.

Despite the foul language, this fellow really did debunk the major conspiracy theories. As I foolishly read some of the comments though, I couldn't help but feel sad at the rampant and utter stupidity of some folks... :unsure:

Where I go to school there are at least 15-20 people around me at any given time that have concealed handguns on them and yet my university has bever had a shooting. These recent shootings have been pushed by the media way too much to the point where people forget the actual facts.

 

And why would you want to take guns to school for, show and tell maybe?

As simple as self defense. If a shooting were to happen, the bad guy is not going to get far.

Till they change the gun laws in the usa the shootings will continue to happen
