January 23, 201313 yr I started using tabs, but it's so confusing to me, now I'm trying to develop my ears to listen and learn music. It's hard, almost impossible sometimes, but when you get it right it's so satisfying. Alexis Mefano

January 23, 201313 yr I started using tabs, but it's so confusing to me, now I'm trying to develop my ears to listen and learn music. It's hard, almost impossible sometimes, but when you get it right it's so satisfying. Learning by ear is a good skill. Training to recognise keys, time signatures and intervals etc is a useful skill without having to look at sheet music. I first came across tabs back in high school. I am self taught in several instruments. My first tab-encounter was the Guns and Roses Appetite For Destruction book for bass guitar. I spent hours memorising all 12 of those bass lines and can still remember them now even though it was around 20 odd years ago. For my group performance we played Sweet Child O'Mine for GCSE music with me on bass. Then I moved on to lead/rhythm with my owning all 4 of the Metallica lead guitar books (up to And Justice For All....the best period of their career with my craving a Kirk Hammet ESP signature series!) which I learned most of almost note for note. Around 5 years ago got into DreamTheater and that was the one time recently I seriously thought of picking up a guitar again but I havent yet. No time with other things I enjoy doing. Jumping ahead I now play piano having left my guitaring days behind and believe me that there are no tabs to make things easy for Chopins Preludes!
January 24, 201313 yr Learning by ear is a good skill. Training to recognise keys, time signatures and intervals etc is a useful skill without having to look at sheet music. I have largely stopped playing by ear because I like to play things without having to "guess". It's a skill I hope I can improve, though. In the classical music world, it is easy to become sloppy if one relies on playing by ear too much. There are so many details to dive into and obsess over that playing solely by ear often overlooks! Jumping ahead I now play piano having left my guitaring days behind and believe me that there are no tabs to make things easy for Chopins Preludes! Chopin is one of the greatest classical piano composers. Even his etudes (musical and technical exercises) are wonderfully melodic and can be played alone as performance pieces! I am personally performing a Chopin nocturne this upcoming weekend. I strongly dislike performing at recitals (even though they are student recitals) due to the annoyance of memorization. When one plays from memory, it is too easy to either (1) let go and play freely and naturally, then make small mistakes and become too unfocused to recover cleanly or (2) over-concentrate, lose musical feeling, and induce errors due to one's focus on individual notes instead of the entire piece as a coherent collection of ideas.
January 24, 201313 yr Wait.....there are girls here now?? There are also women pilots. +1 to that! This is my baby that I play 'tabs' on Amazing Fender Stratocasters !
January 24, 201313 yr Commercial Member There are also women pilots. Technically a woman pilot is a female pilot who is over 50 years old(according to a old SAA captain who writes the funny column in a SA avaition mag). So technically, we only have girl pilots. January 24, 201313 yr Commercial Member Ryan- Is this Aqualung by Jethro Tull? it is It is most definitely not Jethro Tull's Aqualung (which I have actually transcribed though in the past!). The song in my transcription was released in the fall of 2011 and was nominated for a Grammy Award at last year's show. The guitarist who played it is widely regarded as one of the best in rock/metal music today and knowing and working with him is absolutely one of the highlights of my career as a transcriber.
