GEX ground textures major upgrade head's up...

Featured Replies

I occasionally click the update tab on my GEX North America and Europe, and found a few days ago that there is a major upgrade in both a unified program interface, as well as updated textures.

Boy, was it!

You have to (read the full instructions...) bring back your texture back-ups, then totally delete the programs you have. Then, you download the updated programs you previously owned, (for me, GEX North America and Europe) and armed with your installation password and product keys for those purchases you received from Flight1, you'll get a full and free upgrade to the new unified installation. There is over 5 GB's of new and most impressive ground textures that were not present and/or were added to alongside the older version(s) for a new graphics blending.

After installation, and of course after having uninstalled the old program's footprint on my hard-drive before the updated install, I noticed that nearly 5 GB of added space was consumed with the new unified mask and textures post install.

I took FSX out for a spin post install, and must say that what you now see is very life-like at all altitudes. They did a fine job of it. New added trees along with ground textures are a pleasure to view. In fact, I actually now prefer the look of the newly updated GEX products to what screen shots I saw for ORBX's coming total world coverage. Both are great, but having already GEX North America and Europe within FSX, the difference is so small, that I'm sure you will be thrilled when after you take the time to upgrade any GEX product you have. If you also have UTX...make sure you enable the enhanced textures for that product within GEX as well.

Enjoy, for I sure am!

I'm not really into screenshots, but I'm most certain that if you take the time to remove (instructions, read instructions, lol!) your current GEX product(s), and download, and apply the textures to FSX, you will be thrilled with what you see. I am presently in a flight pause from KMYR to KFNT around FL180...and from the lift off, to my present cruise at FL180...it is NOT a hard 'convince' that you are seeing the world verbatim. I fly to KMYR quite often for business, and to my glance-out-the window eyes, this is the real deal that you see, from fields, mountains, rivers. GEX did a great job with the refresh and update. They must have felt 'heat' from ORBX, lol. Take the time to install as per instruction read on the update page, and I'm sure you will agree with me. Oh, I have all graphics within FSX running at full right, wide open. They advise you that to see the horsepower of the new textures, you need to have the highest setting, or near to..... If you can run FSX wide open, it is the world, now pretty well verbatim.

So is the difference really that big compared to old GEX?

I did notice this update thing before but didn't bother doing it, now I got to reinstall GEX again together with rest of the addons so I guess I should get these too.

I have all gex regions but It was going to take 6 hours to update them all.

i have cleaned them off my hard drive and am awaiting ftx global on dvd so I only have to install 1 piece of software. Gex is a good product but I like the colors of ftx they look more real, to me any way.

one thing I would like to know is if the problem with gable roof textures on flat roofs has been fixed in this upgrade when you also have ftx products installed. Weather or not ftx central was on default I always saw these, and that was the main reason I decided to wait for ftx global.

The way I see it competition between these two entities for our flight sim dollar can only achieve a better outcome for the end user.

Hi, and yes, it certainly is! I am comparing the new GEX install head's on with the coming ORBX screenshots that have been released. I am also running my system as per the GRAPHICS section as full and wide open. It is really worth the time to upgrade. Truly. The cities look real. The rural and urban centres look real. All UTX driven landclass, now skinned by the upgraded GEX products is an excellent depiction of the world outside my window, lol!. With the OPUS weather engine directing REX's sky and cloud textures, I am beyond happy! I'm finally at that place where I feel the real world, the real deal is being outputted on my screen. Like I said, I am beyond happy! (smile!)

You bet, competition is alive and well. I'll have to check out the gable roof deal. As I stated, both products are really now, right up there and sure to please. GEX (in my view) has been totally refreshed. Sure, I could have the world skinned for just under $200.00 via ORBX, but being that I fly mostly above North America and over Europe...with the new GEX (and a (thank you!) free upgrade to the latest and greatest), I am personally more than satisfied to keep the status quo.

Seems to me you missed this upgrade about 2 months.... But it is worth the trouble to get the latest textures!

That very well could be, lol. I can't remember when I last clicked to see if there were any updates before I did so three days ago. As you say, I found it totally worth the update exercise. Off for some dinner.....

I do not yet own GEX, FSGenesis / FS Global, or UTX, and had been thinking of waiting for FTX Global instead, but this update seems to demand even more consideration. . . .

In any case, I am glad that there is still competition and variety between developers!

I have this update but in order to get the US update you have to buy another region first then you will get the update to the US once you loaded your new paid for region only way to get it as Nick stated to me fyi Guys but I did like the upgrade much better than the original version.

I have both Europe 2.30 and the North America 1.096 versions, since I fly on those two continents only :P. As I understood, you get North America updated to 1.099 only if you purchase Africa or Asia or South America and Carribean packages, and that is not happening on my side.

I only had US & CANADA for upgrade I bought Carribean package to receive the US update, kind of weird but thats how it works as the US install does not have the upgraded textures in a standalone US install - fyi They are working on a new version of US to be released in 2014 as Nick stated.

Too much work and MSEv2 better long term. Like UTX Mexico region fly again when the mood hits.

I couldn't disagree more regarding MSEv2. Some people don't like perfectly flat photoscenery with no autogen whatsoever. I'm one of them.

And it's too much work to download upgraded textures? Forgive me for asking, but how did your MSEv2 arrive? Was it delivered in a white blanket by a stork, who promptly ran the installer for you afterward?

To each, their own.
