April 26, 201313 yr If you divide it by the hours of joy it gives to you, I'm sure the result is not too disturbing... Sure it is not. But I still do not even divide just in case LOL Regards,Stan
April 26, 201313 yr Scary. I bought one of those half-built programs to track my add-ons so I could find where to go for updates and reinstalls. It was the pits and worthless but, it did scare heck out of me when I totalled up the purchase column. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
April 26, 201313 yr Like some of the other posters here I have a monthly 'pocket money' budget that gets spent on fun stuff, could be FS, could be other games, or a stack of new books to read. I know what that amount is, don't spend more and don't worry about it. Hobbies cost money, what matters is the enjoyment they bring. I think I have about 500 euros worth of FS add-ons and FS-specific hardware, but I only seriously started buying payware two years ago. For context, assuming an average price of about 10-15 euros a book, my bookcases contain about 2500 euros worth of books, though I've been collecting those for a lot longer. If I wanted to I could go down to a restaurant and easily spend 40-50 euros on a meal (if I don't go for the fancy wine), for the same price I could get myself a nice new (non-PMDG ) payware plane or scenery. The add-on will still be providing me with pleasure next year. John-Alan Pascoe
April 26, 201313 yr If someone were to offer me 10k or the total dollar figure of all money spent on hardware and software without adding it up first; I'd take the latter, and that is precisely why I don’t add it up. RE Thomason Jr.
April 26, 201313 yr I found a list and I guess my earlier estimate was low. I don't know exactly how much I paid for each one but assuming an average of $40 each it would be $800 for addons alone in the last 12 to18 months. I rated them out of 10 for worth the money? They nearly all do well for me. Add in hardware and I spent as much on Sim flying as RW gliding! I have said it before and I will say it again unless its a great deal like half price I am not buying anymore addons until I build new Haswell based system and the dust settles on whats next for flight sim. Because of the later my FSX wallet is likely closed for business for the next year for addons at least. April 26, 201313 yr If you divide it by the hours of joy it gives to you, I'm sure the result is not too disturbing... For me that figure comes out to about $10/hour. I'm using the pilot log from FSX for total hours which doesn't include all those flights that ended in CTDs. I raise the sim rate sometimes so I think it evens out. I'm not including $ spent on PC hardware since I would buy that for work anyways (software feveloper). STuff like TrackIR is included. I spend so much time window shopping (checking stuff on sale/looking sceneries that I don't have but look good), maybe I can include those hours in my hours figure I'm now looking for airports that the Dash 8's are currently flying to. Never heard of stavanger before....but I had to get it.
April 26, 201313 yr I'm now looking for airports that the Dash 8's are currently flying to. Try this one: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsxscen&DLID=172010&Cookie=1 Toronto City Center. Porter fly's Dash 8's in and out all day long. Destinations include Montreal and NY. Its free but I had some problems with the photo scenery overrunning the runway
April 27, 201313 yr I'm saving up to buy hardware - cockpit stuff such as from cp flight to add realism against buying more and more software. Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
April 29, 201313 yr I've found that it's very easy to get into the habit of buying addons without actually having fully experienced the one's I have already purchased! So I've cut back on buying many of the sceneries and trying to enjoy the dozens I already have. April 29, 201313 yr Compared to real world flying this stuff is cheap. That's what I keep telling myself anyway. Peter
April 29, 201313 yr Compared to real world flying this stuff is cheap. That's what I keep telling myself anyway. Peter Keep telling yourself that my friend. From what I have read many enthusiasts spend as much and more on Flight Simming as I spend on gliding. For what a home build flight deck would cost you you could easily buy quite a spiffy sailplane. I spend about $2000 a year on gliding. That includes club dues, Glider rental and lauches. Flight Sim for me is about doing aviation stuff I will never get to do in real life. And it is getting more real all the time and more fun. The golden age of flight Sim is upon us if you can afford to spend the money!!
April 29, 201313 yr I just looked at the fact that I first joined this forum 10 years ago, don't really want to comment on the amount I must of spent on addons since then. Lawrence Ashworth
April 29, 201313 yr Theirs an equation for it. E = Enjoyment M = Milage C = Cash E= MC It has to be squared of course EDIT: FSX=(E=MC[squared]) looks better that way
