May 9, 201313 yr Author Certainly there's room for touchscreen computers. but they aren't going to take over the world. If I had a touch screen I wouldn't let my wife anywhere near it. It would get scratched to b....... by her nails in seconds!!!!!!!! MS arrived .... shall we say "late on the scene" as regards touchscreen technology . They seem to be trying to capture the market by attempting to force people to use the new OS whether they like it or not. They have lost their way. Proven by the "Flight" debacle. May 9, 201313 yr I just got this from Newegg today in my email: They're pushing people to buy it, but I'm glad no one is stupid enough to do so and help them reach their goal. i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB

Who is they and what store is this? I'll say this again for those that missed it, When the missile was first created those in the know thought dogfighting was done and there was no need for guns on aircraft. Guess what's on all fighter aircraft today... FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

May 10, 201313 yr Commercial Member But many people don't see the need for a PC. That's why sales of smart phones and tablets are soaring while PC sales are declining - especially desktops. Yeah sure, many people don't see any need for a television either, yet there continues to be a market for those too. I don't think home PC market is going to die any time soon, after all no tablet or smart phone can ever provide same level of gaming experience as proper desktop computers & laptops can. For many people consoles aren't the answer either. And of course there will be need for proper PC's in offices and such, together with gaming community it should give enough support for proper PC market even if mainstream switches to tablets and smartphones.

May 10, 201313 yr I don't think home PC market is going to die any time soon, But I never said it was going to die. I said the market was declining. Forecasts suggest that total sales of desktop PCs in 2017 will be less than the total sales in 2012 despite the overall sales for desktop and portable PCs, tablets and smartphones being forecast to have more than doubled over that period. That is a declining market.http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/27/idc-tablet-growth-2012-2017/Common-sense suggests that's reasonable. Tablets and smartphones increasingly provide what most people need - the ability to connect to the internet, send and receive e-mails, play games, watch videos, take photographs, socialise etc. Gerry Howard
May 10, 201313 yr I always said that the PC Desktop has always been for the Computer Hobbiest going back to the Apple II or Commodore and early desktops. It was always a very small market niche. What happened was in the late 1990's the masses began to purchase Desktops to get onto the Internet and play games....etc, and now can get in the internet with Laptops, Phones,Tablets, game consoles and play games on any of those devices as well. So it is just the Masses that are going away from the Desktop. The Desktop is going back to the Computer Hobbiests where it has always been and I like it better that way. The masses made it annoying anyway so let them enjoy their gadgets.I have had a desktop computer since my Apple II and have always had one since. I will always have a desktop as I like to build them and configure them as a hobby. There will always be a market for the PC user, it is just going back to its original demographic right now. May 11, 201313 yr There will always be a market for the PC user, it is just going back to its original demographic right now. I agree. I know many PC users who use their desktop just for email - they have no interest in anything more 'complicated'. When I suggest to others that they get a PC for this or that, the most common response I get is 'Heck, I even have problems with my mobile phone - how would I manage to operate a computer ! I suppose that Win8 would appeal to those who would find start buttons/menus a little difficult - I can see the advantage for them. However - yesterday I did see an item that MS will be very frightened of - the first Samsung 'Smart' TV. I was tempted - it looked awesome - 55" - you talk to it - wave to it - and have several ('Many') pics on it simultaneously. The price - £2200 ! I was very impressed. Now THAT would make Windows obsolete for many, IMO. My current TV can access the 'net. I can view Youtube etc on it, but I rarely use it - it is only when daughters/friends visit that it is used - otherwise the WiFi is disabled. I can see however that it would suit many of the younger generation (If they can afford the downloads bill). I'm sticking with my i7-3770K for a while longer  Regards Bill i7-3770K 4.2GHz, 16GB, GTX 970 4GB, Win 7 64bit, LG 38GL950G, CH Yoke/Pedals, T.16000M, GenX UK, UK2000 EGGP & EGCC, AeroSoft Gibraltar, FSC 9.5, FSL A320X, 737NGX A318/A319/A320/A321, A2A Cherokee/JF Hawk T1/Dino's EF2000, Iris Grob Tutor

May 11, 201313 yr It's horrible and I'd never put a W8 desktop on my network at work, ever. While Windows 7 was a fantastic release, pretty much loved by all users - the pros dig it and total noobs as well. They've managed to screw up another release. No surprise really. Jacek G. Silly of me I guess... Well I suppose that's true, but I think something of an accident. For most business requirements I don't think you really need a desktop PC -- a dumb terminal suffices. ISTM that cloud computing today isn't much different than having a VT-100 connected to a VAX. scott s. .
