Nvidia GTX 780/7XX news

Release is slated for a couple of weeks from now it seems.

Still trying to decide whether to switch out my 2GB 680 for a GTX 780 or not. Can't decide whether the performance improvement will be worth it seeing as according to a number of sites GTX 680 performance is about 75% of Titan performance and GTX 780 will sit somewhere between. Plus I'm only at 1080P.

Have my 680 on ebay at the moment just to see if I can sell it off at a fairly high price. If I can, then great I'll grab a 780 when I go Haswell around July when the boards with the USB3 fix are out, if not then I'll sit it out until Maxwell arrives in 2014.

The hard part is not knowing exactly when Maxwell will release in 2014. If it's anything like going from 9800GTX to GTX 280 then it could only be 6 months apart, but who knows!

Judge the increment of difference in performance versus the upgrade cost  I continue to be astounded at the currency thrown at incremental upgrades.

The more I think about it the more I think I'll just stick with my 680. If I sold the 680 for say $400.00 and GTX 780 is $699-$799 like speculation is saying I'll have to toss in another $200-300. Worth it? Meh I don't know! Probably not, given that Maxwell is due next year. If only I knew when! lol

I was just kind of thinking, new build/new graphics card with Haswell, since I will be going Haswell.

For those looking to upgrade their graphics card from something lower though I would recommend waiting a couple of weeks as the release of 7XX cards may drop prices on the 6 series cards.

when I go Haswell around July when the boards with the USB3 fix are out

What fix is this and why wouldn't the z87 boards released at the same time Haswell is released not have this fix?

  • Author

It's a problem related to USB 3.0 devices I believe where if the PC goes into a sleep state external drives for example will not automatically come back online and would have to be disconnected then reconnected to be seen by the system.

Z87 boards when released with Haswell were probably manufactured before the fix could be put in, at least that's my guess. The C1 stepping boards that correct this problem are supposed to be available in July. I for one will be waiting for their availability.

Can't stomach spending 400 dollars on graphic card. I know it would make my fsx pretty and Xplane. Just cynical knowing technology worked on is Lowest common demonator if 680gtx is 500 card in 2013 then in 2018 that same card under different labeling and marketing would be midrange card at 200 dollars . Graphic Cards are overpriced and spending 500 to 1000 dollars for 5% to 10% improvement is stupid. It's trickle down technlogy 10.

Considering that FSX is not properly coded to fully leverage the GPU in the first place, IMHO a 780 for FSX is a waste.  Money would be better spent on other hardware upgrades.

Even with my o/c 470gx and massive scenery add-ons, GPU usage never exceeds 40% ... !\

Compare that to DCS World where GPU stays firewalled at 99%.

Just to correct my previous post, it's the C1 stepping Z87 boards with the USB 3.0 problem. C2 will correct this.

As for graphics cards of a higher level in the $500-$1000 bracket being a waste of money, well that depends what you use them for. Not all of us just play FSX etc.

Kostas comparison over at ##### between gtx580/680/Titan show that as far as FSX goes there clearly is a difference between the higher tier cards and there would be an even more marked difference between these cards and those in the lower tiers. Now I would never spend $1000 on a graphics card currently, but Kostas comparison shows the GPU does make a difference to Fsx, specially when pushing high levels of AA, in heavy clouds and can help smooth everything out to feel a lot more fluid. If your pushing high settings and AA levels like I do then it does make a difference.

Helo_Head, just FYI your GPU usage of 40% certainly doesn't mean a faster card wouldn't benefit fsx. I think this may be a little misconception here on your part. There have been countless threads showing that this card and that perform x amount better in fsx or make it feel smoother etc. It all depends on your settings and what is acceptable to you.

I do however agree that the CPU is the most important for FSX, RAM also, but the GPU is not far behind. You wouldnt want to go out and grab a top tier cpu but then skimp on the gpu. I guess in the end it all comes down to every individuals budget and what is good enough for them.

Anyhow I digress. This thread was meant to just simply share some news on new hardware.

I think for me after some consideration I will probably end up riding out these 7XX series cards seeing as I have a gtx 680 already and I have a feeling Maxwell will be just around the corner.

We'll see what the reviews say when these latest cards come out.

1000 could buy i5 3570k with 660ti oc to 4.5 for that one 690 card. Get what you pay for with cards, but rather spend money on add ons than make my clouds pretty myself.

I've been wanting a gtx680 all year & have been waiting for the 780 to come out , & hoping the 680 price comes down a bit , fingers crossed .

Who says the world economy is lagging?.

Five years for myself, to migrate from a GTX285, to a GTX680.  I tend to be at the back of the tech upgrade curve, and choose to let the 'dust' settle... It also gives me a substantial break at the pulling out of the wallet....  :)

From a 285, it was the best money spent in a long, long, time....a real hair-burner....

Anyone with a GTX 680 want to try this out? Get a GTX 770 now if you have a GTX 680 just by flashing your BIOS apparently.
