Amazing OPUS for FSX weather!

Featured Replies

I love Opus also. Just wish that TrackIR support was better. Can't seem to get it smooth.

Sent from my Apple communications device.

Had the same problem, it needs the process priority of the Opus "FSXServer.exe" to be raised to Above Normal or higher. This solved my TIR flickering woes. If you're not sure how to do this Google it or I use FSXAssist to automate all that priority stuff.

Thanks for the heads up! I too have ASE and I'm underwhelmed by it in general. I might have to give Opus a try!

By the way Stan, the company I work for here in England is owned by a company based in Allentown! Small world!

Great!  What's the company's name (if you can divulge).  My Wife and I are looking forward to our next trip to England.  Perhaps we can do it this year.  Being a former teacher of English and American Literature (before going into my own business), I am always excited to visit and explore the rich history of the United Kingdom.

You'll love Opus.

Have you tried lowering the TrackIR scan speed in  OpusFSX configuration? This has been the "magic" fix for me with a setting of 6 ms.

Also, disabling the head movement in OpusFSX has greatly improved TrackIR smoothness (I use AccuFeel).

Let me know what you find.

I enjoy Opus as I just let it do its thing and the weather looks great.

The only thing is when  the weather loads I get severe stuttering for say up to 10 seconds, then it's all back to smooth sailing.  Also, I thought Opus was to have clouds/weather gradually fill the skies.  I get an abrupt "pop" in.  Is this what you guys are experiencing?  I have the latest and really have made no setting changes???

The US company is PPL, I work for one of their subsidiaries in England. Yes, there are some great places to visit in the UK.

Can you set global visibility, say, to 30 miles, without affecting real weather?

If one ignores the lack of undercarriage, it's actually quite a nice landing.

I have a low spec system that chokes on any default FSX weather lower than clear or fair weather. Otherwise it runs a fairly smooth 20 +- fps except in large urban areas.

I had thought about buying OPUS for the camera views alone (no way I can afford Track IR) but $45 is a big gamble for a retired guy with little resources.  How much of an fps penalty does the camera portion of OPUS extract from a low spec system ?

Also reading the setup pdf's it looks like a lot of tweaking to get this program going.  I have vowed to do less tweaking and more flying.  Is my impression of this correct?

I enjoy the program, but price is a bit high for me, what do you think about the price? 45$

I think it's a bit high, mostly because I don't use the camera stuff, I strictly use the weather engine. I bought back in December of 2012, used it for a bit, then decided it wasn't worth the money and asked for a refund. Went back to AS2012 until last month when I decided to make the switch to OPUS for good. Use it on every flight (AS textures), and don't regret it one bit.

Because more and more options are added to OPUS and things can become/are becoming a bit complicated, I decided to keep OPUS running on default and to enable the (rather new) automatic settings, which let the program decide itself what to do depending on the input of my departure and destination airport ánd cruise altitude. In the beginning, when OPUS had a really simple and clear interface, I used my own settings but as I said, the program is getting more complicated with every beta, so just keeping it default makes life a lot easier. ;)

J is right on the money, default all the way. Opus just keeps getting better and better. The camera's work perfectly and DHM is amazing.

Reality Is For People Who Can't Handle Simulation!

Opus was great until I discovered FS Global Real Weather.... I does something that no other weather engine do, having these "local weather phenomens", that will make landings alot more challenging.(they only have about 8 airports covered but the list is growing). After expirienced these effects going back to Opus is just dull... I didn't know that this was possible with FSX and it's great to see devs thinking out of the box and add something new to the sim.

Her is a video from real life, I had a similar expirience at Madeira with this engine B)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=km4WPTUI_O4#!

Aerosoft is working on this airport so I sent the FSGlobal devs info about the local weather conditons for this airport and got a nice response that it will be added to the list. Its considered to be the most dangerous airport in Norway(closed in the 90's for Commercial traffic due to a accident with a Twotter on takeoff).

it needs the process priority of the Opus "FSXServer.exe" to be raised to Above Normal or higher. This solved my TIR flickering woes.

Thanks for the tip.  I really like the Opus head movement effect but have had the same problems with TrackIR - I've nearly got it solved, but I still get occasional flickers and overall TrackIR panning isn't as smooth as it could be.  Will try adjusting the priority and see what happens.

Hi

Ive got opus.. but i had to stop using it as it makes the sim freeze for say 20 secs, which causes squakbox to disconnect and my airlines va acars tracker to also disconnect too.  Most annoying thing was it would do when i was establised on ils and circle the land approaches too, last thing you want is the sim freezing !!

if anyone could find me a hot fix for it then id start using it again

I think it is the Vatsim weather download option. Untick it and see if it helps. I think Opus pauses when it switches to vatsim weather.

System: MSFS2024, ASUS Rog Stryx Z790-A,  Intel i9-14900KF,  Asus ROG Ryujin III 360 , Asus Hyperion Case,Rog Stryx 4090 OC, Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD, 1Tb Samsung 860 EVO SSD,64Gb G Skill Memory, Asus Aura 1200W Gold PSU,Win 11 ,LG C4 48" 4K OLED Screen., Airbus TCA Full Kit, Stream Deck XL. WinWing FCU, EFIS, MCDU

Ive never experienced any pausing or stuttering at all. I don't use VATSIM though so maybe that is the cause

Will try adjusting the priority and see what happens.

First test was pretty encouraging.  I set the Opus FSXServer.exe process priority to high, Opus scan speed to 60 ms, and TrackIR smoothness to 50, and had a good ride - only one flash, for a microsecond, no jerks or stutters.  It's early rounds so I don't want to jump to conclusions yet, but this approach is worth pursuing.

I read one post that suggested that both the Opus and TrackIR process priorities be set to above normal or higher - I'll try that as well and will report back.
