FTX: Global VECTOR Released

Featured Replies

And recently new freeware mesh has been released that's of a lot higher res than what FS Global offers so... it seems rather logical to me that I don't NEED any other mesh. Why replace something I already have with something that's worse than that?

According to Orbx, FS Global mesh is the most accurate, since they said that they've tuned airport elevation data to real-life heights and only with FS Global will you get matching mesh. Whether they're saying the truth remains to be seen.

Agree, and I´m actually quite shocked that J van E - who seems to be on top of everything - still use the default FSX mess/mesh!

Who´s the experts here? All the loudmouths bla-bla with every little thing going on with their sim, or me, quietly tugging along with all my Pilot´s mesh, yep, all the new ones, and it´s totally awesome, but I don´t post 5-6 times a day about my FSX, don´t have to, but J van E does, all the time and it´s becoming tiresome because I - and maybe +100K other simmers don´t have his problems.

J van E: I appreciate most of your posts and opinions, but you need to get up to date with stuff, or keep silent... It´s not good what you do, it´s very, very confusing. I would use UTX for EU, USA, South America/Caribic, Canada and Alaska, and then try out Vector for the rest of the world, why not?

That's actually one of the worst and rudest unprovoked posts I've ever seen....

Jeroen is incredibly helpful and is a big part of this forum.

A lot of people don't have third party mesh for the whole world, I sure as hell don't. If I need mesh I'll just take some free stuff really.

Loud mouths because we post about our sim? This is a FLIGHTSIM FORUM. We post about our setups to learn and to help others. Not to occasionally come and be rude to good members of the forum.

Anyway, Vector is working very well for me ... I now have frozen lakes in Minnesota that were flowing before.

I'm asking this in all seriousness and not to be any sort of stick in the mud or rabblerouser...

Are you sure those are frozen lakes, or are the water bodies missing and you're seeing bare, snow covered ground? (Flip to spring/summer to check if you could!)

I just do not understand why YOUR fascination with a tiny, tiny part of the world named Norway, should be so important that we all have to go fly there? Could be too crowded, eh?

LOL No one has to. I only started three topics about it...! ^_^

Thanks for the kind words, Lee! But it's all good already so let's leave it at this. ^_^

According to Orbx, FS Global mesh is the most accurate, since they said that they've tuned airport elevation data to real-life heights and only with FS Global will you get matching mesh.

Let me quote from the shop. First an explanation of what LOD means in this regard:

"LOD 8 for "flat" areas (you don't need LOD 12 there, since flat is flat, whatever LOD you will render it in) and more to LOD 12 for mountainous areas (data availability permitting)."

And then this:

"Greenland, Iceland and Scandinavia in LOD 9 (76m; standard SRTM resolution)"

Soooooo Scandinavia is rather flat and doesn't need hi res mesh... right.

And btw the name of the addon includes 2010 so it's at least 3 years old. The mesh isn't accurate, the elevation of the airports is accurate when it comes to this particular mesh.

The mesh isn't accurate, the elevation of the airports is accurate when it comes to this particular mesh.

I don't know what to believe. Orbx say that they tuned the elevation of airports to real-life values (which means that they recommend FS Global 2010 as the most accurate mesh product out there), but that seems unlikely as PILOT'S also have a newer version available (FS Global Ultimate). I wouldn't expect a company like Orbx to lie like that a few months ago, but seeing their recent track record, they probably do.

Just read on the Orbx forum that you can disable the elevation corrections of the airports if you want to by removing the elevation files (AEC's). However, after posting this positive piece of information it was also posted that "any quality worldwide mesh should prevent obvious errors like water crawling uphill"... Didn't even think about that one but without FS Global 2010 mesh you will possibly get weird waters everywhere...! And that can not be solved by removing some files. So no matter what Orbx promised or said or tells on their site: to fully enjoy Vector you really need FS Global 2010 and nothing else. It's more mandatory than they dare to say.

I guess we'll have to wait until people with other mesh products post their results to see how it will look without FS Global 2010.

Well I am glad I didn't buy this right away. I have but never installed UTX because I wasn't sure if it worked with FTX global. It appears it does and since most of my flying is done in the USA it appears UTX should work just fine for me correct?

I also have FS global mesh 2010 but I have not installed that either on my new computer as I was told it can cause issues.

Could somebody please let me know if FTX Global, FS global mesh 2010 and UTX all work together just fine?

If this product gets everything worked out it seems like a great product but right now after reading this thread I am really glad I did not get it right off the bat.

They will work together just fine indeed!

Correction... UTX covers Urban Landclass. Not Landclass in general. As in it repositions cities and towns more accurately. With FTX, you have to wait for OpenLC.

To see how that looks... and i mean global with vector and landclass.... you can download the free Iceland Demo.

Correction, of your correction. UTX Europe includes a full land classification for the product coverage. UT Alaska offers a similar full land classification for the product coverage area.

Awesome, this whole time I could have been using these programs!!! Well glad to know now at least haha.

We are now in 2013, close to 2014, your "27 years of simming" might actually be the problem..?

Really, I respect your experience, but not your opinion on mesh, this is a must have IMO.

- and landclass too, and UTX, and, and, you know the drill, right?

I have FSG mesh, (Galaxy member) and it too has it 's problems. If you have accurate mesh, then your going to end up with airports on plateaus. Simply because FSX does not support sloped runways. So I don't agree that it's a "Must Have" as you put it.  It's a tradeoff like allot of things in FS, do you want a world with Hi Res accurate mesh with airports sitting on cliffs, or lower res default mesh, but the airport elevation is level with the surrounding terrain? Up til now that has been the only options. Some like you and me like the hi res mesh, and can live with the airports on a cliff. Others, like Jeroen would rather have flat airports, over accurate mesh. It's only a matter of choice. It good now that it appears there is a tool that will correct this problem, but think of what it has to do to correct it. It has to flatten out the surrounding areas by artificially raising the mesh of the low end. to the elevation of the airport. FSG tried that with their Ver 2 mesh, and was only partly successful!. I still have many airports on cliffs. Denver being one of them. So I don't think this is an issue anyone should be throwing stones.

Thanks

While I've used UTX for years it can look very ugly in cities and I was under the impression that it would correct the road / autogen overlay issues.  Also, there seemed to be continual issues with ORBX scenery when using it and FPS always seemed to take a major hit with it also.

The thing that will push me into FTX Vector is that they will be releasing FTX LC next year which should hopefully correct the AG / road alignment issues.  IMO UTX is a dead product in terms of moving forward while ORBX is addressing the entire Kahuna albeit at a measured pace.

Don't get me wrong about UTX - it has provided substantial benefits for me over the years but I'm all for moving forward and ORBX is dedicating the resources to this aim.

Of course - based on the discussions in this thread the elephant in the room is terrain mesh.  It is just another asset that we simmers need to spring for IMO.  Sum it all up and maybe now we can see why MS bowed out of providing the next-gen simulator because if they did it right (as they are so wantonly to do) - the base sim would have cost $500 US.

I'm still waiting for them to issue a fix for their FTX GlowBall lights which are, well... Big balls that glow.

I downloaded the Iceland demo the day it was released and the first thing I did was to try out the famous night lighting. Now maybe I'm not seeing the real world in the same way everyone else sees it but those lights are simply appealing to moths.

What has this to do with vector?

Well, Iceland does indeed look fabulous, I have no way of knowing how accurate it is, but it's been months and still no resolution to the light issue that FTXGlobal has. How long is it going to take to fix possible problems with vector data? Of course, ORBX are not responsible, it's all done by yet another 3rd party. No problem, if the product is below standard I can get a refund right?
