FTX: Global VECTOR Released

Featured Replies

I am a bit surprised that so many seem to be using FSX with out a good mesh. I must be an easy sell because I have used Genesis for at least as long as FSX. It should also not come as a surprise that ORBX is going to slant their products to compete with Flight 1. After all Flight 1 has been very aggressive in trying to blow up Orbx and LM for some years now. ORBX has stated for months that they were working toward a complete solution for P3D scenery. That includes Mesh and landclass as well as Global. It's just business. You pay to play. Things that go fast, are fun and things that have boobs cost money!! end of story.

EDIT: after reading my post I want to make it very clear that I am not trashing Flight 1. They are only compeating for our business and a use and love many of their products.

Agree, and I´m actually quite shocked that J van E - who seems to be on top of everything - still use the default FSX mess/mesh!

Who´s the experts here? All the loudmouths bla-bla with every little thing going on with their sim, or me, quietly tugging along with all my Pilot´s mesh, yep, all the new ones, and it´s totally awesome, but I don´t post 5-6 times a day about my FSX, don´t have to, but J van E does, all the time and it´s becoming tiresome because I - and maybe +100K other simmers don´t have his problems.

J van E: I appreciate most of your posts and opinions, but you need to get up to date with stuff, or keep silent... It´s not good what you do, it´s very, very confusing. I would use UTX for EU, USA, South America/Caribic, Canada and Alaska,  and then try out Vector for the rest of the world, why not?

I find his posts very helpful. If you don't like them just skip 'em, no need to go shooting off in public. Especially not presuming to speak for "+100k" other simmers.

Installing a good mesh does not yet make you an expert IMO.

@sacha: That´s your opinion, you ARE the expert with your sim, not me!

Just got tired of all the posts, daily, mostly about the freeware Norway scenery he at the moment is hooked on, and there are issues, many issues.

Next month he will be exited about some new stuff, and posting about the problems with that, don´t believe me?

Just wait, it´s tiresome, it´s a waste of time, it´s called OCD, Google it...

Anyway, Vector is working very well for me

Just fired it up and checked out London, my home area of North Kent, and Belgrade (another city I'm familiar with which was always passed over by other scenery products).

There are a lot more roads than before, and yes they could do with better blending into the existing FTXG textures, namely by reducing the size of the road encasements. The greater number of roads does indeed reduce the amount of autogen, but Ive still got plenty of autogen and my low altitude environment is still pretty well populated. This is a limitation of FS and not Orbx's or Pilot's fault. There are double bridges on the Thames in London, and heading out towards Dartford and Gravesend I do see vector power lines running across the Thames Estuary.

As you say, I'll take it for what it is - the first vector scenery with global coverage. That's not to be sniffed at. Yes it probably was rushed out to catch the Christmas market, but given repeated statements that this is a "live" product and is essentially a work in progress then I'd expect it to receive the polish it needs over the next month or two.

What we've got here is the same thing that happens whenever a headline Orbx release occurs - lots of criticism from people who as far as I can tell don't even have the product installed. Same old, same old. Orbx get a rough time on the Avsim forums, not surprising really given the history of Avsim's own Orbx forum. Contrast this thread right now, with the REX4 release thread on Christmas Eve which was removed after a few hours of people criticising that release...

Bottom line is Vector was never going to be perfect on release. Given its global coverage, that's a huge amount of data. Things haven't been helped by the apparent rush to release the product. Time will tell if it will be patched to address the issues that are being encountered. However, if anybody else knows of a product that has global vector data at this price then please tell me.

Nick

It's relative simple in my eyes:

If you have all UTX areas and fly only in that areas, there's not much need to switch.

UTX is developed since years. And maybe somebody could remember what UTX has looked like after release?

If you want worldwide(!) coverage get FTXV. But then let them some time to develop that product as it is impossible to bring out a bug-free GPS based worldwide product.

The rpicing question is simple as two UTX parts costs the same as FTXV for the whole world.

I don't understand the mesh discussion as you could choose a mesh that you like - despite what Pilot's try to tell you on their page.

I also use default FSX mesh.  Used FS Genesis for FS9 but got tired of the airport plateau issues, and found default FSX mesh good enough for my purposes.  I guess you'll have to lump me in with those who aren't "on top of everything."  But you know, after 27 years of simming it gets hard to keep up the pace.  Maybe you can cut us old guys a little slack!

Was interested in Vector for P3D2 (am not adding to my FSX installation right now), but I'm inclined to wait 'til I see where all the moving parts land.  So I'll follow the updates here and otherwise stand by.

It should be no surprise that Vector is going to have numerous errors. I have Pacific Northwest (PNW) Service Pack 6; and even after 6 attempts there are still errors that haven't been noticed (or at least not corrected), in this comparatively small area.

Many people seem to missing the point that ORBX is slanting this group of products towards P3D. Yes they will work with FSX but as I read post from around the Web I get the idea more and more each day that P3D in time will become the go to Sim for most folks.

Oh, I get that.  But since P3D2 default mesh is basically the same as FSX default mesh, the same issues probably apply.  So I'd like to find out if I need to add third party mesh.  Also, the lack of an uninstaller makes me hesitate.  Finally, I'm keeping FTX Global off my install 'til LM comes up for a fix with the "white box" issue (FTX Global lights activated in daytime by the haze layer when volumetric fog is off).  P3D2 needs work right now, and until version 2.05 (now in the works) I'm keeping my install virgin.  Maybe some of the Vector issues will be addressed by then, maybe not.  But I'll make a decision later on.  For now, no FTX in my P3D, and Global plus UTX works fine in my FSX.  So that's it for me for the moment.

I have never been to Moscow. I am older and don't have the best eye sight but was wondering what is so wrong. Is it not enough buildings?

We are now in 2013, close to 2014, your "27 years of simming" might actually be the problem..?

Really, I respect your experience, but not your opinion on mesh, this is a must have IMO.

- and landclass too, and UTX, and, and, you know the drill, right?

Awesome info in this thread guys, thanks. I'll be keeping UTX and FTXG and pass on FTXGV after all.

I have all UTX regions and the info available now strongly suggest UTX to be the best for a long while still.

And I'll be applying the tweak to get FTXG lights on UTX roads ;)

Cheers,

Dang straight!  The tweak works just fine....so go an light 'er up!

Nope...too many roads...and actually to me, looks like an overdose of FS9.  I for sure, will be passing on this product, and now, will be  setting my sights on OpenLC.  I hope that that fulfills my anticipations....sure hope.  Funny, as someone else on another thread stated, over 24 months ago, ANYTHING ORBX put out, I would have been at the head of the download line. But, since it is very clear that they now are no longer an in-house producer, but a clearing house of sub-contractors....the ORBX 'glow' has left this guy's eyes.  I'll now sit in the bush, big time, and wait for those wanting to leap through the snow...to the download site....oh yeah....   Ho, ho, and another, ho.....
