January 4, 201412 yr Strap her to the chair and make her watch an approach into Juneau with the HD Mesh and Skymaxx. She'll understand. If not, just strap her to a chair. January 5, 201412 yr Let me get it out there the trees are from Andras Fabian and the old beaches are still intact... I suppose you mean my old wintered tree texture packs from here: http://www.alpilotx.net/downloads/old-forest-downloads/ And indeed, those packs (Europe / USA packs) can be - still - used as drop in replacements in XP10 default forests 8as they use the same texture packs which we developed for the XP9 forest add-on). January 8, 201412 yr John - I have put the beer and steaks away for another day. UPS says it will be tomorrow because "conditions have caused the delivery date to change" - whatever that is. Waiting... John John Wingold
January 9, 201412 yr Ok guys - and girls, if interested, Got the Gigabyte GTX 700 4G OC card. When I shut down yesterday (with my GTX 560 OC card), I had the MU2 sitting on the runway with HDR off, SkyMaxx Pro operating, and having FRs of about 45. Today, after installing this extremely large card, my FRs at the same location were about 54. I had expected much more. I then began raising the rendering options and the FRs did not change. I switched to HDR and maxed out most all settings, including AA to the 4X and whatever the other (can't remember what it is called) AA to the next to the bottom (higher) setting (4x something). I checked every block in that section. All other things were set to high or very high. Numbers dropped by 5. Loaded HD Mesh V2 and lost another 3-4 frames. Flying now with "God Rays" and everything else from KROA at 28 (lowest during twilight landings) to around 60-61 (over less populated areas). Summary - not a large increase in FRs, but more stable throughout the flight... by far! That's about it. It seems the more stuff you load up, the better it runs.... like it was working to hold down the settings! System - i7-4770 (no K), 16 GB 1600 DRAMM, Z87-43 MSI motherboard, 2 TB SATA HD, and this monster card (Monster? I had to cut some of the HD bay metal to fit it into my case - 11.5 inches long!) John - I drank all the beer, but still have some steak! John John Wingold
January 9, 201412 yr I use the gtx 770 4GB too. What settings do you have your shadows on? This is the only setting I find kills the fps! And world view distance too actually.... Ian
January 10, 201412 yr Author I also was initially a bit disappointed I couldn't max everything, especially AA which I still keep at 2xFXAA if I want lots of autogen. But I've been able to max world detail distance and get the autogen really high while enjoying guaranteed smooth frames in heavy weather etc. which makes a big difference to the visual plausibility and immersion of the world. Definitely worth the upgrade. i910900k, RTX 3090, 32GB DDR4 RAM, AW3423DW, Ruddy girt big mug of Yorkshire Tea
January 10, 201412 yr Sounds very promising. I have a Gigabyte 780 TI 3 Gb in my new system and have not had a chance to test it yet with X Plane. January 10, 201412 yr Did a little more flying and took the Carenado B58 to JFK. Same settings as above except daylight (3D Cockpit shadows) and had about 44-45 on the default runway. Flew to LaGuardia and, at one point, the FRs dropped to 20. If you have ever flown that route, you know that there is a LOT of autogen. I had about 28-29 coming in for a landing and 44 at the terminal. While this might night sound like much, it is fantastic with all this stuff running. No stuttering or lapses. I really don't think I can bog this down to an unacceptable rate and I am now going to set things as a more reasonable (less dense) setting. BTW I cannot hear these three fans over the case fans I have installed. I have heard some complaints of buzzing, but I hear none of that. Also, this is a second generation card - two 8 pin power connectors as opposed to first generation 6 & 8. John  John Wingold
January 10, 201412 yr Shadows are very tough on frames in XPX. In the trade off between features and frame rate shadows are the first thing I dumped. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. January 11, 201412 yr Moderator While this might night sound like much, it is fantastic with all this stuff running. No stuttering or lapses. I would be very happy if I could get anywhere near that :-). I generally average between 15-20 most of the time, and I'm actually quite happy with it. At some point I'll upgrade, and the latest NVIDIA cards look like they are the way to go
