Malaysian Flight 370

I was thinking that Zoran.. too big...

Tail height is 18.5m. In the AirFrance disaster tail fin was found relatively intact and floating, and that plane probably hit the water extremely hard.

Simming with the PMDG 777, I was amazed at how it glides from altitude, on complete engine loss. Not touching anything, just on autopilot, it stalls, picks up speed, recovers, eventually stabilisies in a +- 2000ft/min glide (with RAT deployed).

Last night I did something wrong that stopped the RAT deploying (forgot to disarm the cargo fire bottles after discharge; eventually that knocked out all the display panels, FMC and LNAV - I forget to reset the equipment cooling from override back to auto - discharging cargo fire bottles autotoggles equip cooling to override!). I was flying around in the dark, totally on backup intruments.

It ran out of fuel 7hrs later and hit water at 1600 ft/min, at 170kts, coming down from 10000 feet, but at times it cycled to 0ft/min VS (stall/recover/stall cycles, and took several minutes to come down). This all assumes of course that the PMDG FDE is pretty accurate. So could have hit the water with a very low VS.

The 777 is extremely strong structurally - witness how relatively intact the fuselage was after a near full cartwheel in the SF incident.

Unfortunately reports starting to come out that aircraft on site have not been able to find anything. I really hope this is not another false alarm for the sake of the families involved. Best thoughts and wishes to them. After wondering about friends and associates for hours after 9/11 I can't fathom what they have been going through throughout this ordeal.

Dillion my friend, put down the Red Bulls! Holly Cow!

CNN: I watched tonight to see the latest what nots. A "panel" of airline Captains put forth their views. 4 are sure, or leaned to, aircraft problems, and the left turn is most likely an attempt to reach an airport for an emergency landing. 1 was positive the thing is sitting on a runway some where, and came across as a loony... so much so that Anderson Cooper limited his questions to him. They had a prosecutor/attorney general on to speak about the flight sim angle, and thankfully, she was very level headed and totally discarded any notion the flight sim is a trainingtool for dooms day.

Flight Sim and Public out cry for us all to be 'rounded up to concentration camps: One word - Kardashians. or two words - Duck Dynasty. Mr Dillions passionate words in fear of the Flight Simulation community is a refection of our own interest, and a natural reaction for something we all follow and care about. The general public on the other hand... just don't give a sh#t. There will be no banning of anything, or dumbing down of addon's, or the withdrawal of commercial manufactures of flight sim support. Calm down brothers.

The 24 hour news spot light is bright, but it doesn't stay in one place for very long. There is a famous clip of a former congressmen being interrupted during an interview for "BREAKING NEWS!"... Yes.. Justin Biber was arrested! OMG!

Fear not Flight Simmers, you are more then safe.

I don't think you should relax just yet. If this turns out to be something similar to the Japan incident of a mentally disturbed flightsimmer hijacking an aircraft, there may be another wave of storm for the flightsim community to endure.

Thats a bloody long way away from the last ping

Remember that the ping position accuracy is not that high to start with (I remember reading it was +-100km), Secondly its 12 days on and things drift at sea. In the case of the SA Airways Helderberg crash (28 Nov 1987), wreckage was found only 12hrs later, having drifted quite far from the actual crash site as subsequntly discovered using submarine sonar.

This is why there was some surprise that the news of satellite images of "debris" were even made public before ships or planes arrived in the area. It just adds another crest and/or trough to the emotional rollercoaster for the families.

LIVE PRESS CONFERENCE UPDATE: OBJECTS ARE "CREDIBLE SIGHTINGS"

This is the same information I reported on Page 16 yesterday morning http://forum.avsim.net/topic/436839-malaysian-flight-370/page-16#entry2946584.  They sure are slow getting to the information!!!!  When I woke up this morning I was shocked to hear a CNN reporter suggesting the aircraft went into a wormhole or blackhole - http://www.mediaite.com/tv/cnns-don-lemon-is-it-preposterous-to-think-a-black-hole-caused-flight-370-to-go-missing/.  I mean, he actually asked the question!

In any case, the latest sighting is not the 777.  I'm still hanging onto my theory that it was hijacked.

Not at all, they have explained already that it takes a day or two for the photos to be analysed, then a review if anything is found. Hope you understand it is a huge amount of water they are looking at.

I think there's a lot of disinformation going on with this tragic event by the Malaysian government as well as others.  They have people running all over the place in the wrong places.

Best regards,

This was only released 12 hours ago? Anyway, we cant say for sure if it is or isn't. I would not be surprised at all if it was. When you look at a map, the area of possible debris is almost exactly reciprocal to the original flight plan. It would go with the theory of an immediate return to KL.

Thanks Will, didn't see the explanation on the time stamp. I definitely appreciate the task they are trying to accomplish and it I do not envy their task at all.

it actually amazes me they find anything at all...I recall when the RAAF had to find and rescue Tony Bullymore a few years ago....needle in a haystack...and his yacht was above water!!

And this is more like a needle on a 100acre farm than a needle in a haystack... Even worse they are pointing to 4 farms with 1000,haystacks each and hoping to find the one needle hidden somewhere on one of those farms...

Best regards,

And that backs up the hijacking assumption a lot: No need to go that way with a mechanical/electrical/hydraulical onboard emergency.
