Prepar3D v2.5 Development Update

The "vertical contrails" on my PC are contrails from AI planes flying at high altitude that are a vertical column rising up from the ground (presumably all the way up to the plane). They are static, but every few seconds a new one appears that corresponds with the changed position of the AI plane. Two or three of these "vertical contrails" per plane can be seen at any one time, since the older ones fade away (like the tail end of a proper contrail).

From Rob's videos and LM's communication, there has definitely been work on extrude effects but not sure if contrails have been fixed

PrecipitFX folks fixed the contrail issue, I made a few adjustments to PrecipitFX, they released another update which I now use.  Right now I can't test contrails "out of the box" with a BASE v2.5 ... when RCs come out I'll go back to base installs and check contrails (which I had reported to LM a long time ago).  But for here and now PrecipitFX provide solutions:

skip to the 4:03 min mark (this video was with 2.4 and early cloud testing ... and that's the CS 777)

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob, I would like to ask if the new version will include a better HDR, the default is not bad however at night is too bright. I'm using your configuration but could be nice if the new version could include your configuration or something similar by default.

Walter

I feel we are in gifted times. I don't remember in any period of sim development being able to have this level of heads up prior to an anticipated release. Thank you Rob and LM for this!

Hi Rob, I would like to ask if the new version will include a better HDR, the default is not bad however at night is too bright.

I posted a video showing the night light earlier in this long thread - here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/460387-prepar3d-v25-development-update/?p=3163427  fast forward to the 12:10 min mark where I move time forward from dusk to night.  Night seems very accurate to me (moon slice included) and that's with using my HDR shader adjustments.  So best of both worlds IMHO ... maybe even a little too dark at night because real world one's eye will adjust.

Cheers, Rob.

@Rob,

I see Adam Breed posted on the official LM forum about the configuration file issue. My understanding of his response is that this is a "non issue" and had more to do with preventing 3rd party developers from replacing the default versions of P3d system files. His analogy was to scenery.cfg which shows up in two folders, one a working version and a default one in the main P3d folder.  Father Bill explained the hierarchy in this thread:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/423869-scenerycfg-location-windows-7-clarification-requested/

The default version in the root folder is the one that shouldn't be edited, else it would never be patched when an update is installed.

It's a little complicated to have a perfect HDR, thanks for your explanation, I can't wait for the new version  ^_^

Hi everyone...

Due to circumstances I've been out of the hobby since V2.0 and only then managed to fly it for a single month. At the begging of January this year I was finally in a position to buy 2.4 and install it. That's all I've managed to do. Did manage to set everything up and do a few hours flying. Being out of the loop for over a year, here's my take on what I've noticed.

1. I checked this forum for the first time at the start of January and was surprised at how few posts had been made. Has all the activity moved to the P3D forum?

2. Sat down this evening and saw an update is due. First impression was wow this sim is moving in the right direction.

3. Read this thread and decided that some things don't change.

4. See a few old faces and especially Rob is very much active and helping this hobby move in the right direction.

5. V2.4 has come along way and is well worth the money I paid for it.

6. Constructive, negative comments are what testers and people who discover issues make.They enhance our hobby.

7. Destructive negative comments are pointless, just like the people that make them.

I've kept the list short but feel that because I've been away so long I'm in a position to notice what's changed. Or hasn't. I do love our hobby, the people in it ( well the majority of them) the planes we fly and above all the software that enables all this to take place. Let's make it better, our hobby is small but let's not kill it lets make it grow.

Hello Rob, can you tell what exactly sky color set and which addon you use (day, dusk, dawn)?

I use a mix of REX and ones downloaded from AVSIM's library provided by Gabriel Rodrigues link here: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=Gabriel+Joaquim+Teles+Rodrigues&CatID=root&Go=Search

Hmmm ... I'll have to read that post because Orbx Vector will not work without me duplicating the Terrain.cfg.

It would be nice if folks were allowed to adjust the HDR to their liking via an easier user friendly interface, about the only thing for sure I know about HDR is that no one agrees on the best HDR -- maybe some 3rd party will pick up this slack (hint hint).

Welcome back and I hope you enjoy the ride ... change is good, long term growth can't come without change.

Yes probably 3rd party could improve HDR, I really enjoying P3D, I'm testing with some addons, configurations, everything but I think something should improve, well we know the antialising is not perfect, MSAA is the old method but very used in games, FXAA is a good option for low-end systems but blurry, SSAA best option but very heavy on perfomance. I was thinking if LM could implement TXAA, is a nice antialising, I saw that in COD Black Ops 2 and is perfect, at least for me. Well is just an idea, I would like to know your opinions  ^_^

That's an excellent point. Given the impact HDR has on the visuals, it would be a great step forward to be able to modify in a sensible way. Well...why don't you write it hint...hint  :smile:

@Rob,

Would you mind sharing what your brightness, contrast, and gamma settings were for that video (in the NVIDIA control panel).  I have my HDR setup similar to yours but no matter what I tweak in the control panel, cannot get the night (clouds) to come up that dark at night.  I know it's monitor dependent, but am just curious for a starting point.

Don't mean to be rude but 22 FPS with a 4.8Ghz and a Titan...WoW, that is depressing.

I don't know how or why, but I'm running Prepar3d v2.4 on an i5 2500k, NVidia 6600ti GTX, 6gb ram and with most sliders over to the right, averaging 50-60fps with a very smooth performance along with sharp graphics. This system is about 3 years old now and I feel I should upgrade but reading various posts I wonder if I would see much benefit. I would consider a cpu, gpu change and a 4k monitor but it sounds like a lot of money for a small gain.
