OOM errors and how to avoid them

Featured Replies

It seems P3D is fast becoming the tweaking sim everyone wanted to get away from with FSX.  There are currently so many variables you have to keep track of with P3D,  texture resizing to prevent OOMs, fiddling with older installers and .cfg locations for a long list of new and old FTX products.   Not to mention differing opinions on the various topics.....The list goes on and on. Installing a fresh version of P3D has become quite a daunting task and not something i relish having spent the past two weeks doing just that - and still with results not ideal.

THIS.   You can grab it off the Skyrim Nexus.    This only does DDS files.  BMP files and AGN files will be ignored.   BMP files have to be done as described above by Toby and others.

Texture-Optimize.jpg

Thanks for the info. DDS is straight forward. BMP is not. So is this the process for BMP:

-flip the BMP image (vertically/horizontally/both). Any image editor or something specific?

-convert to DDS

-optimize using optimize texture

-convert to BMP

-flip back

-restore to folder

You have given us a lot of info. Much appreciated. Without totally abusing your good nature, could you give us bullet points on what to do with a hypothetical addon that contains both DDS and BMP items? Don't need the conversion details for DDS. You have kindly set us up there.

Many thanks

I've said it before and I'll say it again ... have patients ... the tweaking will come to an end ;)

Cheers, Rob.

Thanks Rob for your posting. Yet it seems that there are simmers that NEVER will understand that, in many cases, tweaking just messes up the sims. Since moving to P3D I have NEVER applied any tweak and I have never had a problem, the sim just runs nice and smooth, never had an CTD or OOM! But I guess some "dedicated tweakers" will call me a liar!  :fool: Why can´t people just enjoy the flying and stop the fiddeling? I, at least bought my FS for flying, not fiddling.

For you out there, I have been into simming 1988 (FS 3.0) and I guess some of you tweakers were not even in your parents minds at that time! Sorry, Swedish bad joke!

I only have the one tweak, Optimize parts and mine runs great, probably because I haven't screwed it up with unnecessary tweaks that don't work.

Bobsk8, I was lying a bit, I have the same tweak for PMDG as the developer recommended it! Thanks for your posting, it´s a pity that other simmers refuse to do as we doi.  :good:

Compared to P3D, the early days of FS4 or 9 and X were a horror story. The day those programs  were released they were loaded with bugs and required constant patching, and fixing and tweaking and even then you were afraid to do anything during a flight like sneeze or cough or land, or takeoff, or change altitude, or heading, because it seemed that was all that was needed for your PC to lock up or CTD.  If I had a nickle for every time my PC crashed during a flight, I would be rich today.

Thanks for everything. You give us all you can considering the restrictions you must operate under. I look forward to the next pass of Prepar3d. Keep up the good work on our behalf.

I had a few bmp's that converted but haven't noticed any problems, However, to be safe, I'll set the configuration

I went through and converted all the orbx scenery. I have one particular flight that will OOM every time. Few it after the optimization and had over 700mb left at landing!

Now trying to figure out the best way to handle any updates. Probably just rerun the optimizer.

Have you had any issues with Orbx scenery after the conversion? Also did you batch convert the whole Orbx folder, or convert one by one? I've been holding off converting Orbx because I was under the impression from some comments elsewhere that they could not be converted because of some different method used. I've converted all other 3rd party scenery at this point, inlcuding some A2A aircraft, waiting for your response.

What sceneries have you optimized with the tool and how successful was it? What about sceneries from FSDT and T2G?

3GB usage ? Really ?

I optmized my textures, Scenery and NGX.

Settings on sliders all Default settings.

Why I'm not reaching 4GB VAS ?

Your memory settings for the columns is not set to virtual memory.

I am not even wasting time tweaking 2.5+ and just going to wait for v3 - even Rob has given clues to be patient now.  V3 should solve all VAS woes that we all face currently.

Corect me if I'm wrong, but I checked the settings as I saw here in other post (menu -> View -> Select Columns -> [Tab] Process Memory -> [check] Virtual Size -> OK)

But still a concern why I can't reach 4GB

I'm getting OOM's at 3GB even when VAS monitor by FSUIPC is telling me that I have more than 1Gb available.

I'm in a i5 laptop, with no video card.

Hey,

FSUIPC shows it backwards vs Process Explorer

FSUIPC - 4GB - What VAS is used up = What Free VAS you have and keeps going down

Where as Process Explorer shows you How much are you consuming "What VAS is being used at the moment"

In your picture = 4.0 - 1.6 GB Used (Process Explorer Indicator) = 2.4 GB Free (FSUIPC indicator)

Hope it helps

Yes I Knew it ! I was trying to show that the 2.4 + 1.6 its the correct balance to 4GB of memory that is suppose to be used for P3D. But in the image that I post first, clearly OOM's occurs with only 3GB of VAS usage. ):
