AA in V3 just cannot get it right!

I have had this problem with V2 of Prepar3d and it took me AGES to get it sorted. Now I've moved to V3 and still have the same problem. My image quality in Prepar3d is really poor with jagged lines and cockpit writing. The antialiasing settings in the P3D UI make absolutely no change whatsoever. I have everything on full blast, and the image is still naff and full of jagged edges. Now the adjustment that saved the day in my 2.5 was in NVidia Inspector, but I cannot for the life of me find which settings I changed to make things look good. I have tried application controlled, which does nothing, but enhanced and override also do nothing, or at least very, very little. Can someone please tell me which settings I have to set in NVI to completely smooth the image in P3D? I have had it perfect in the previous version but, like I say, just cannot remember how I did it.

The Sparse Grid Super Sampling setting in NVI is generally accepted as the variable that improves AA. However this can be at a performance cost. For optimal results, this needs to complement settings within your P3D as well - this is a recent thread where it is discussed in some length, might be helpful -

antialiasing of P3D v3 is awful.

I use 4x MSAA in P3D with FXAA off and 4x SGSS in Inspector, but even so shimmering and jaggies are a little present.

The optimum would be 8x MSAA + 8x SGSS, but it is improponibile for performance.

I prefer not to use Inspector because it creates confusion. FXAA ingame is a fast method and works nicely for me with maximum MSAA. Anything else and you will probably see FPS problems with clouds in P3D unless you are running a Titan or something.

I like everything about FXAA but I hate the blurry cockpits we get. It's even worse if you have any sort of glass cockpit or the GTN 750.

 

I'm actually not satisfied with the 2xSGSS and 8x in game either - the exterior paint jobs are usually really shimmery (not great for screenshots). The trees and autogen are a little shimmery but not too bad.

Each system seems to react differently. I use 4MSAA, 4SGSS, FXAA off and get generally great visuals with the resulting performance hit in clouds.

 

Keep trying various combinations of those settings until you get the sweet spot for your system.

The SGSS was the thing I was missing thanks chaps. Turning FXAA off helps too.

There was something in Steve's DX10 fixer that removed the "msaa treatment" of clouds- of course that was for FSX. I wonder if some option is similar in P3D. We don't need the clouds to be aliased at all, soft blobs is ok!

Such a feature controlling MSAA application to clouds still would not help FPS when using SSGS.  The driver level SSGS is applied to everything rendered and there is no controlling what is and what is not.  BTW this is also true for those using the Fixer for FSX.

 

The popularity of SSGS was actually due to a driver flaw; rather ironic how a mistake can become a prized feature.

AA in P3D (and FSX DX10) depends on the model aircraft in use. Compare the Stock B58 with the A36, and see the A36 requires zooming right into the instruments to be clear. For these types of model, some amount of TSGSS is required to improve AA, whereas the B58 is not so bad.

I found no amount of changing "Antialiasing - Setting" made any difference.

 

I found the TSGSSAA and TSSAA setting only worked when the MSAA multiple is the same. So 4xMSAA + 4xTSGSSAA worked, but 4xMSAA and 2xSGSSAA did not, until I set 2xMSAA with the 2xTSGSSAA.

I found setting TSGSSAA is only required with some planes like the A36 as mentioned, otherwise TSSAA was adequate. I found TSGSSAA only marginally less performance than TSSAA. Adding any supersampling slows down the GPU a lot since 2xSSAA is equivalent to double the screen area.

I found turning off AA altogether was best when setting up the in-sim graphics and features. Adding increasing AA progressively reduces the performance on my rig from 150fps to 40fps at 8xTSGSSAA. I found setting the in-sim features could bring the sim performance down to 50fps. Setting both in-sim features and AA together made little difference to those fps values, I still only had 40fps performance with full AA and features.

where is the TSGSSAA setting in NVI...can you post a screenshot of NVI?
