HTC Vive vs Rift VR for P3D?

There is an interesting discussion on the gauges point here on the Flyinside board:

Dan has commented before on the forums there that the Debug tool doesn't do anything for Flyinside as he's already doing all he can with the resolution settings in the FI interface

Maybe someone is an owner of Vive/Rift and GTX 1080 and can write about flight sim experience?

That's the reason why I am holding back. I cannot even stand lowish fps (<60fps) with TrackIR using a G-sync monitor. Makes me dizzy after while and it is eye-taxing.

Question to the cv1/vice owners...When you are flying, does it look for you as you are really on this altitude and also does it make landings easier because of the better feel for the altitudes?

I had the smoothest landing of my FS career last night in to MCO with the 737 NGX because of that level of depth you now have...  On takeoff I almost felt g force change when I started rotated away from the runway.  Almost a feeling of falling backward I guess.  It's really unreal.

Think of it as in the actual cockpit with the dimensions of the wings, cabin, etc. being the actual dimensions. Given that the perception and feeling of dimensions is actually experienced in VR there is a reality that can't be matched. You could have a 4K 65" monitor and it wouldn't rival the immersion.

Anyone thinking of getting of getting Leap Motion?  It's 74.99 for the package right now.

Yes you feel.for the first time you will find that you are at a height above the runway and you will feel the height of the cockpit above the ground..it will surprise you..

Well I setup the rift yesterday, it wasn't hard to do , took about 1 hr. Only issue is I have only one hdmi out on my msi 980ti so I had to connect monitor with Dvi while I plugged the rift into my hdmi out. I loaded up the pmdg 737 and just did a very quick flight, didn't load the fms just took off. I have to say it was unreal sitting inside the cockpit, like you are really in it! You just have to try for your self there's no other way to explain it. The resolution isn't great espepically since I have a suhd Samsung monitor and sim in 4k. I only spent 15 minutes in the sim since the trial period ran out on the flyinside. I have to say it's going to take some getting used to because the perspective is totally different types then the default virtual cockpit view I've been using for years. If this is just the beginning watch out. This is the real deal if you want as real as it gets this may be it besides the real thing or a simulator. Will play with it more later tonight!

Congrats to new Rift/Vive users! There is no question VR is the future for our simmers. Once we have 4K per eye, 60fps VR for P3D etc, we're all in heaven...

The surreal thing is that we're actually already one step closer to that heaven!

Great report, and interesting that you and a couple of others are trying Vr out on the pmdg stuff. I would imagine it would run even smoother on something not so demanding, but how smooth was it? Is it possible to program the FMC and read the ND, or is the resolution too bad for that?

I have the Leap Motion but not fully functional on my favourite aircraft,PMDG, although I know Dan is working on it. Mind you, it takes a toll on fps.

I am still with my DK2. I will wait until CV2 wich I am sure will be mind blowing. I would recommend approaches like Madeira, Kai Tak, rwy 22 lfmn or Samos. You will find it has never been so easy to perform those landings.

Take a seat on the 777 and you really feel the height.

Regarding programming the fmc, you can use the zoom option.

I have done a few flights on Ivao and let me tell you the immersion is amazing. Watch this video

For me it was no less smooth than without VR.  If anything it was actually more smooth?  Made possible I'm sure by the asynchronous time warp feature.

What kind of FPS hit for the leap motion?  I was considering but I don't think I'd want to lose any FPS over it.  Its still easy enough to zoom in and middle mouse scroll to setup everything I'd need.  Pretty much makes any goflight modules I have obsolete now - aside from throttles I'd say.

Very smooth, where things get tricky is if you move around and your xyz axis ? Gets choppy a bit from the Motion detector. If you sit still and just your move head it's really smooth. Mind you in have a 980ti and a 4.6 6600k. What I can say is you really feel like you are sitting inside the cockpit it's incredible the feeling.

Yes with a little peeping in you can read the fms..honestly its not as bad as one would think.you can pretty much look at the instruments and figure out..For FMS you will need a little peek in..

Good to see people enjoying the immersion..with airlines the bland scenery doesnt hold a place.you can complete your flight and enjoy the feelings in your stomach when you make a steep left turn...

This Rift VR thing is astonishing. Flying between the mountains in Alaska (ORBX Alaska), over lakes and glaciers stick your head out of the cockpit window and you can almost feel the breeze on your face and the exhaust from that turbine engine from my Duke! The full immersion in the terrain and clouds has no equal. The terrain now looks like it has life and is 100% enhanced when you are actually inside its world not viewing from a stale 2D window.

I understand with the Vive there will be additional interactive aspects with the hand controllers of being able to walk around your plane for inspections etc. Hopefully this will be implemented when the Rift's hand controllers come out. Nothing I'd like to do better then land my plane in some god forsaken place in a mountain pass, get out and walk around and then back in my plane (maybe do a little fishing in an isolated lake before I pick up and leave, lol).

Given the rather constrained dimensions of both types of headsets (and the requirement to have one's eyeballs a mere gnats' whisker away from the internal lenses), does this preclude us older, less than 20-20 vision endowed, visually-impaired guys from donning our 'specs and participating in this wondrous new VR World?

Stupidly expensive rig, nonplussed Memsahib, disinterested offspring and a fascinated cat as Rio.  XP11, P3Dv3 and an Oculus Rift.

i am horribly far sighted but can see very well up close so i havnt had an issue seeing things clearly.
