December 8, 20169 yr Thanks.. oh i see, flyinsidefsx for xplane 10.. ill have to pm them and see. Unfortunately i bought x-plane 10 via steam, so i doubt the free upgrade will apply.. hopefully the full price isnt too outrageous and there is FI support for x11 till they get native support (they said a future version of 11 will have it). Hey, any updates on your P3D fly inside experience? Ill be looking at setting it up soon, have the demo installed ETC With thanks Dave Bolton
January 4, 20179 yr Author I've now had the chance to use 3 different sims with VR + rift. Xplane 11, Aerofly FS2 and P3D.. i went to XP for awhile here getting it configured as best I could, had to drop back to 2880 + 4SSA due to frame rate issues.. its "not bad", but after having come back to P3D again, its much much sharper (i think).. aerofly fs2 is second best.. still debating the whole which sim is most "realistic".. obviously for now aerofly fs2 is more eye candy than anything (and super smooth out of the box), while XP, i'm unsure.. p3d feels like the better "simulator", but XP is better overall in quality (if you ignore the FI vr issues for now).. sorry that was off tangent.. All that said.. I'm wondering how everyone is doing youtube videos for VR demos.. i'd like to start doing some, but there are limitations in resolution.. i think the best way would be to record the whole thing, with views saved and head motions and replay it and record it, but I'm not aware of a recording solution that can do that.. fs recorder i thought maybe, but i cant get it to work right. I'm thinking live recordings just cant happen with the VR, short of recording any audio/voiceovers as I fly. Also.. i still seem to be getting OOMs with the latest hotfix and FI 1.71.. last one i was flying a simple plane (forget which carenado).. toggled outside view a few times.. suddenly black textures then ding ding.. had to restart the whole sim. January 6, 20179 yr Same here. I just got an Oculus Rift and am frustrated how quickly I'm getting oom's. Update - I finally got a stable config, but my scenery and auto gen are turned down and the landscape looks too barren compared to my 2D setup. But - the immersion truly is mind-blowing! Landing in VR is as close to real life as I've experienced. So - I want more eye candy and am looking to the future. Do you think a 64 bit version of P3D will be enough of an improvement in and of itself with my current setup (i7 3770 oc 4.5 / gtx 970) so I can move scenery setup sliders to the right?

So are you saying to avoid OOMs you turned the the sliders down.. how far down? Only thing the 64bit will probably do is avoid the OOMs (and enable those sliders to go back up).. I achieve 30 fps with my setup on average, but at moderate sliders.. i'd say your rig will be ok, though frankly the 970 is too weak for VR. Which res do you have Flyinside running at? With P3D i run at the 3840 and 4x AA on the 1080.. i went from a 980ti to the 1080 just to get better AA and less shimmer, though in XP11 i can only hit 2880 and 4x AA without going below 26 fps worst case. P3D based on this, is still way sharper.. meanwhile Aerofly FS2 is amazing at the 2.0 scale setting too (with the 1080), right out of the box, but both p3d and xp11 are better "sims" (as of now anyway) Asus Strix z790-e; 1000 watt evga SuperNova Plat; 14900k AC_LL 0.55 adp -0.050 253/253/355 CEPoff (CB-1pass 39200 80c, msfs peak 92,avg 60-78c, astrorender 95c,room76F); 64GB(dual 32) cl32 6400 at 6400 xmpII F5-6400J3239G32GX2-TZ5RK, Asus Ryuo III 360mm; Thermaltake v51 Case; Gigabyte 4090 OC; VR-Crystal; Dofreality H6; Astrosite
January 6, 20179 yr I bought a Rift CV1 last week to use it with FlyInside and the experience is just amazing. Of course things do not look so sharp, but the feeling of being there is so unbelievable that I just do not care. Impossible to fly using a monitor after that (and I have a top of the line Dell 3440x1440). Being that said, since the beginning I've noticed that VAS usage on P3D 3.4 using VR was way higher than normal (something around 500-700mb more). After months of stability, I started having some OOMs again. First thing I done was to reduce the resolution to the native Rift resolution and to disable RAAS. I've successfully completed long-haul flights on the PMDG 777 from São Paulo and Miami to Amsterdam and multiple flights using payware airports, ORBX regions in NA and A2A's C172 without OOMs since then. January 6, 20179 yr Dan the developer of Flyinside is working on improving the VAS situation I read on the forums. He reckons he will have a new version out by next week. I'm still using flyinside 1.62 and haven't upgraded to 1.71 which is the version that appears to have the vas issues. I think you can download older versions of flyinside if you are having issues with VAS. Yeah, the Rift and VR are a huge improvement for flight simming once you get used to the lower resolution (which doesn't take long if you aren't biased against it). Got to have the money to be able to afford a 1080 though.
January 6, 20179 yr I have flyinside X Plane and P3d. Thing is FI P3D has been developed for quite a long time and optimised specially using P3D native VR. I remember the first few days of Fi P3D. Things have improved a lot. The development of X Plane is still new. I think once XP 11 improves performance and we get native VR it will blow P3D away. Lets not forget that FI XP uses HDR which P3D doesnt. HDR is quite heavy on fps. Honestly I dont know where Dan gets the time to fix and improve so many issues. Its amazing what he has done so far considering its a one man's job. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z2zZS5hqIkc
January 7, 20179 yr Good to hear you like it tgcbraun. May i ask what your specs are. Do you think my gtx970oc and 2600k 4.5Ghz are up to this task of vr? Have the same monitor as you (dell 3440 1440) and p3d and xp11 look awesome on it. Cheers joopje

Got to have the money to be able to afford a 1080 though. Works fine on my 1070! Good to hear you like it tgcbraun. May i ask what your specs are. Cheers joopje I have an i7 4770k @ 4.7Ghz, gtx1070, 32gb RAM and a 1Tb SSD and it usually runs at the recommended 90fps on VR mode. I had a 970 and a 4.0Ghz i7 4770 just until last month and I've upgraded with VR in mind. I think you could make it with your config. It all depends on your settings and which payware aricraft/screnarios your are using. As I said, I had to lower my settings a bit to be able to use everything I'm used to, even though that was more because of VAS issues than anything else. If I were you, I would try it, but only if you have some reserves available to upgrade if needed. From what I've experienced until now, it is definitely worth it. If you can afford it, it is the way to go. January 7, 20179 yr Haven't read through the complete thread so maybe you already discussed this but just wanted to ask if you're happy with the lighting with currently no HDR support for P3D and with the resolution? I used a pair of Oculus Rift glasses for a couple of weeks and the immersion was nothing short of amazing and nothing you can achieve using normal 2D screens but in the end I still decided to turn the glasses back because of the bad resolution and how trying to figure out what different dials and screens in the NGX said caused eyestrain and headache. Still miss the sensation though of being in the cockpit...
January 7, 20179 yr So are you saying to avoid OOMs you turned the the sliders down.. how far down? My current settings are: Monitor Rez 2560x1440 FXAA, VSync OFF MSAA 2 Samples Anisotropic 16x Texture Rez 1024x1024 Terrain, Tessellation, Water, SFX all MEDIUM Bath not checked, only, cloud and user vehicle checked Mesh 2m Texture 15cm Land detail checked Scenery objects all Normal No HDR lighting Dynamic reflections Off Landing lights, lens flare checked Shadows Medium Enable terrain to receive checked Terrain cast 10,000 Cloud cast 30,000 Object cast 6,000 Only internal and external vehicle boxes checked for cast and receive Cloud draw 90mi Cloud density Medium Vol fog, detailed clouds checked Traffic all settings off I'm getting about 24fps with these in ORBX Calif. No stutters, oom's. I'm going to try to move sliders to improve scenery.
January 20, 20179 yr If anyone wants brighter/contrast light levels in the Rift, you can make larger adjustments in Flyinside by editing the flyinside ini file rather than using the sliders in the user interface. The sliders only have a range of 0-0.4 but the ini file allow you to increase the range to 0-1.0. Combined with the PTA mod you can get some satisfying improvements depending on your needs.
January 21, 20179 yr Actually, big update here.. The short of it.. the Rift IS sharper, enough so it warrants dedicating the Rift for the Flight Rig and keeping the Vive in the living room for now, with the possibility of selling the Vive later if the controllers + sensor coming this fall equate to what the Vive currently has going on (and you can play Steam VR with the Rift etc).. I'm not sure why, but it just truly is.. right away on the default flight sitting in the jet, i noticed sharpness in the buildings on the left that wasnt there before.. the flyinside menus were easy to read now.. and i'm still one notch down from max res in the flyinside settings. The ground objects were sharper.. Overall, i'd say maybe 10% sharper.. still blurrier than a 1080p screen, especially off in the distance, but much more "doable"/ " livable".. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. April 21, 20179 yr Just using flyinside with P3dv3 and a rift and it is truly amazing........however had a couple of questions. 1)Is it possible to enable supersampling and sharpen up the image with some of the tweaks you can use on other games - the obvious one I am aware of is to change one of the settings using the rift SDK tool and select a higher setting such as 1.5 for SS - anyone know if this will work? 2)What are the aircraft that look best in Flyinside? - best for me currently is the realair duke and some of the PDMG (737 and 777) look good - although have had some trouble with losing zoom in and out function on some of my PDMG flights?
