The helicopter thread

One area where Microsoft could give a big boost to helicopter simulation *and*  fixed wing, is to make a push for restoring force-feedback controls for flight simulation. We should be able to feel the onset of VRS with rotor vibration instead of just suddenly dropping out of the sky. Force feedback would also allow a "floppy" joystick without centering for more realistic cyclic control.

Absolutely! I'm still using my ancient G940 in P3D (with FSForce) and couldn't live without it...

I don't have any other heli sim other than Real Flight 8 RF8 and FSX, but I am pretty happy with FSX and the R22 c/w mods online, though I have no real world heli experience. The blade slap mod is great. I hope MS can do that or purchase it off the modder.

I think they should seriously look into blade slap to incorporate with the fixed wing propeller GA planes as well, because during my flying lessons on a piper warrior I recall many times hearing blade slap on short final in the flare just before landing as power goes to idle. Scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it, but you get used to it. Its a great sound and very loud.

The Xbox angle is an interesting one - it will match my favourite controller for PC Heli sim flying - the PDP Xbox Win 10 USB controller. Its the cheapest and best controller I own with radio-control type configuration which I have a preference for. The paddles at the back give rudder control as well with both hands - complete control. The RF8 usb controller is not bad as well.

To be frank, I am surprised that I like the FSX heli flight model, as I always assumed it was rubbish, until I got into heli flying. Feels very real to me now..it augers into wind and is reasonably hard to hover properly....in high cross wind its a challenge to fly...but no doubt there are better heli sims out there.

I actually have the best memmories of that DODOSIM Bell 206 for fs9... Also bought the upgd for FSX, and I would certainly consider using it with P3D if released.

It did a pretty decent job according to rw pilot feedback - not me, and jumpseat experience, even if you get the chance to take the controls for a while isn't significative...

You might find this youtube channel interesting, spcially the "Accuracy" videos.

You can't have a proper Flight Simulator without simulating helicopters!!

It would be against Microsoft's legacy, as helicopter simulation was a given in all recent releases at least.

What a huge, tremendous lost opportunity, to have the entire world simulated like this and not be able to fly helicopters at all...

I really, really hope they are adding them later on, providing realistic flight dynamics, on par with the new airplane flight modelling.

It would be a huge disappointment and a game changer (pun intended) for me if they didn't.

They said they will, probably not at launch, what is the problem ? Just be patient

Hey, isn't this the nag thread for rotorheads?

I'm just nagging 😋

One more vote for helicopters.  I exclusively fly helicopters and, will go so far as to say if MSFlt doesn't have helicopters I will not change from P3D.  Helicopters are the primary reason I flight sim.  I am certain MS will not care a lot if I don't switch.  But, it is my position.

I love helicopters but it  is not reciprocated. They don't love me. Actually, they do their  utmost to kill me at landing and succeed most of the time.

It's not just impatience (okay, it's a little of that). It's more about proof of concept.

Helicopter flight modeling is so different from plank wings, that it would be nice to see that MS/ASOBO is taking this seriously, and not as just a hack or "add-on" replacement for the main flight model, which is how it had to be done for FSX.

Helicopters are also one of the hardest types of aircraft to model properly. I can count the really good helicopters in XP11 on the fingers of one hand, and it took years to get there. 3rd party helicopter developers can use all the help they could get from MS with an early SDK, to reduce the lead time before we see a great helicopter model. It shouldn't be delayed as an afterthought for the new sim.

Finally, if the major selling point of the new MSFS is the sexy new scenery model, why on earth wouldn't they include a helicopter for sightseeing? It would be a vote of confidence in their scenery -- that it's good enough to be seen low and slow.

Roughly half my sim time is spent in a helicopter, and it's one of two aircraft I virtually "own" in the FSEconomy game. So it's not quite as drastic as not being able to fly MSFS at all. But I'll be staying with XP11 as an additional sim if we don't see a good model of a medium twin helicopter with modern flight control systems and 4-axis autopilot in the new sim. If not at release, then within the first year. I'm not asking for much, am I? 😉

Practice makes perfect! Or at least less sloppy and death-defying. 😄

Using decent flight controls appropriate for helos is half the battle. The other half is just practice.

Microsoft said that they want to cover every type of flying, including Helicopters. They also said however that they do want to make it right. I don't expect helis to arrive at release, but later on yes and they better indeed work properly 🙂

Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."

Just to agree with what Paraffin said, i believe heli's are much more difficult to simulate properly (and fly), and MS/ASOBO should take their time to either create a proper heli or get the aerodynamics right so third parties can create proper helicopters for the new flight sim. With the lack of heli's in the initial release, am keeping my X-plane/DCS sims for my rotary needs.MS if you are reading this, no heli aerodynamics is complete without VRS, ETL, TR VRS or TFE to mention a few.

+1 here for Proper helicopter implementation in FS2020. Accurate micro weather would be nice and useful as well.

You do realize that we do have a Rotorhead forum on Avsim, don't you?  Perhaps you and some of the other rotor wing aficionados could be more active there too.

I too am looking forward to a usable variety of helicopters in the new MSFS. FSX had sling loading in one mission but it was a nightmare with faulty flight dynamics. and poor flight modeling. I'm hoping for more accuracy to come.

Yeah this is exactly where I gave up on the helicopter missions...

Generally I don't care much for helicopters, but if they will be usable, I will try them from time to time, sure.
