Windows Update and Orbx 100 FPS

Featured Replies

Did I do something wrong, I just updated to 1903 build 18362.295 with my medium RX-580 2600x stock setup at best and with some Orbx scenery near KHQM getting between 70-100 fps without active sky, the below pic with GPU at 1% CPU at 20% and 1.3Gb vram is 103.1 fps. I didn't change anything, I have never seen P3D this smooth in my sim lifetime on this meager system. Someone tell me what I did wrong so that I can go back to my 30fps.

Did you test this same exact location before the update to compare?  There isn't anything demanding going on in that shot along with lots of water so high FPS in that scenario seems normal.  Try it around LAX or NYC.....😄

Windows updates reset nvidia Inspector settings to default.  If you're using that program to limit your fps, that would explain it.

He is using a Radeon RX 580 graphics card, not Geforce.

Windows 1903 update has enhanced scheduler functions for the Ryzen CPU. I suspect it has something to do with that also. I would be very interested in what you have noticed further, as I am planning to go full AMD also with my new build for P3D.

Very interesting observation.

Based on the screenshot, it's just a basic coastal area of Washington state, from the looks of it not FTX PNW or anything graphically intense. 70-100 with no other add ons isn't out of the realm of possibility.

100fps is still an exceptionally high framerate for P3D, wherever you are.

If I untick " use high-resolution terrain textures" my FPS will rocket up if unlock my FPS, all my top sliders are maxed out tex res 4096.

Thing is that this area has been my base of flying for 2 years and know what to expect with these settings, but somehow this is different and this is looking so much better. The only difference is right after the latest win update.

Now I'm going to speculate wildly but is it possible that this update had something to do with the new MSFS optimization ?

That doesn't look like ORBX terrain, that looks like default P3D terrain.

It's possible Win10 update fixed a driver problem you didn't know you had, but your FPS seems "about normal" to me given your settings and hardware.  What FPS were you getting before?

Also, when you right click the Prepar3d v4 desktop icon and select compatibility tab, what do you have for:

  • Disable fullscreen optimizations
  • Run this program as an administrator

Cheers, Rob.

Rob,

You've peaked my interest...I run as admin, but Disable fullscreen optimizations is not checked. What does selecting Disable fullscreen optimizations do?

Kind Regards,

Not really, with clear skies, a default airplane, and in that area, it's very easy to get very high fps.

Wrong, you DID change something and regarding software, you did the most dramatic change possible on a computer: you "changed" the operating system. While of course everybody expects that Windows 10 1903 runs exactly as Windows 10 1809, it does not.

Means: without going back to test if it was really related to the Windows 10 update, nobody will ever be able to tell if you gained a lot of performance after the update and due to the update or if the Windows 10 update simply eliminated some performance reducing misconfigurations of the "old" build.

Greetings, Chris

I do have Admin and Optimizations are checked. but I always run it in windowed mode. But you may have a point that the update did fix something that was wrong.

In all fairness I said I didn't change anything, but MS did without any input from me.

Haven't had a chance to check this out because I'm too busy dealing with the fact that 1903 borked my ethernet adapters on two machines, including my work laptop.  Thankfully I've got wifi on both and I'm currently using that as my fallback.

My system would have no problem hitting that mark... But like another poster pointed out, try getting that in a major city. Your system is working fine.
