It's grass automatically placed by the engine around the scenery. What you see in the picture is autogenerated.

It's great because you can populate the whole world with accurate vegetation. It would be impossible to do it manually.

Let's say they are using the Azure A.I. to do this task. In that case the A.I. will use the imagery and other data to choose which type of vegetation will be placed in each part of the world.

I think you are all being a bit too optimistic about the Azure AI contribution.

I think it will be more like "layer of grass everywhere on the world" except for mountains above a certain height or something like that 😛

Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."

@ca_metal

Not the whole scenery . . .

The grass is only displayed at a certain height and distance relative to the player! This saves computing power for other presentations!
You can see it also in the Normandy picture! In the background left at the the two houses, there is no more grass displayed!

You could be right, but if you look the screenshots so far, it seems something is populating the orthos with accurate autogen (shapes and types of buildings, type and color of vegetation etc).

Look those shots, something is picking the color of the grass based on the color of the orthos:

Also something is placing desert shrubs on the deserts:

The A.I. would perfectly do that kind of task, they just need to train it.

By the whole scenery I meant you will see it everywhere in the world, it won't be limited to custom made sceneries like an airport. You will see autogenerated grass in Asia, South America, Africa etc. That's what I meant. It won't be limited to places they handplaced the grass.

You are talking about Level of Detail.

Project XCloud is the streaming platform. Azure is how they call their cloud based platform of services.

From the horse's mouth:

What is Azure?
Microsoft Azure is an ever-expanding set of cloud services to help your organization meet your business challenges. It’s the freedom to build, manage, and deploy applications on a massive, global network using your favorite tools and frameworks.

Could someone explain what is procedurally generated grass and what makes it so great ?

Thanks !

It's grass generated by software algorithms instead if manually placed grass.  Procedural grass can potentially be anywhere on Earth, if the data is there.

It could be a clue they are doing procedural and shader based seasons, pools of water and winter snow.

This is very big news.

Procedural grass is very much welcome if we, the users, can access the tool to make our own.

Only if it's legal in your state or province.

I spend most of my simming in the middle of nowhere, Alaska, Indonesia, PNG etc.. The 3D grass I was refering to was for a dirt strip in a small island in the Bismarck Sea. Missions ? I create mine thank you very much.

Anyway, you are so happy to pounce, why trying to understand what the other guy says when you can do some grandstanding about naysayers ?  Proc grass is very good news (the part you cut when quoting me), I only wished that we see it in an aviation environment.

You're right.

Interested in real world general aviation? Check out my youtube channel. Thank you!

Didn't answer about helis. After all these years simming, landing  an heli with consistency is still eluding me. Some say that  looking at the grass moving with the rotor can be of help. Looking forward to see that 😉.

I would love to see the Okavango Delta in seasonal flood in the new sim. Green in flood season, brown in dry season. I wonder if this would be covered. It sounds like it may be
