January 16, 20206 yr Personally, I think the 8086K is still the CPU of choice for Flight Sim. A binned 8700K and can in many cases reach 5.3ghz on all 6 cores. If I was building now I would probably choose to buy an 8089K over anything that has come after it.

I mean, most 9900K you easily get to 4.9GHz and then those 400MHz mean an increase of 8%, that is just nothing. I would prefer two more cores over 8% higher clock rates at any time. We have to rethink our way how to look at clock rates and overclocking capabil: some years ago, we had CPUs running at 3.4-3.6GHz and simmers overclocked them to 4.4-4.6GHz, gaining in an ideal situation more than 27% of performance. Nowadays, with those Intels and AMDs already offering such a high default turbo clock rate, overclocking is not the same anymore and certainly does not provide the same increase in performance. If you are hitting 100% core 0 usage with your preferred settings, that extra speed whilst not necessarily helping with FPS (assuming a sensible limit set), but will help avoid stutters causes by the sim wanting more than that 100% core usage. I have definitely found this on my systems. Pete Win10: 22H2 19045.2728 CPU: 9900KS at 5.5GHz Memory: 32Gb at 3800 MHz. GPU: RTX 24Gb Titan 2 x 2160p projectors at 25Hz onto 200 FOV curved screen

January 16, 20206 yr Best course of action is to wait till March (2 more months) - P3D should be coming out soon; we all will know what the hardware req will be and more info will come form MSFS about their sim; and Intel will launch their new chips by then (that should be by next month approx). Just few more weeks. How I Evaluate Third Party Sim Addon Developers Refined P3Dv5.0 HF2 Settings Part1 (has MaddogX) and older thread Part 2 (has PMDG 747)

This is a decades old debate. Overclocking is about gaining the full working advantage of the CPU, and the cost is just some time. Whether or not future sims will take better advantage of multi-threading than what we have now notwithstanding, the advantage of overclocking is that it adds performance. In a simulator, added performance means added visual feedback and enjoyment. Greg
January 16, 20206 yr My 8600k @ 5.4GHz runs P3D better than 9900KS @ 5.1GHz. Huge core counts don't matter. If your worst case scenario is around 20FPS, then couple of FPS gain is quite a percentage to have. And stop waiting for new sim and new processors. There will always be something around the corner that is going to be better and faster. Well, maybe not those 10th gen Intel desktop processors some are talking about. Currently, these are only rumors, but rumors say that you will get that same 5 year old architecture with another two cores slapped in to the die. With the same architecture, an increased thermal footprint is going to cost you overclocking capacity and you will just end up with worse performance. So if you want best gaming performance, get Intel. If you are not interested in extracting every last bit of performance then go with either one of the manufacturers, doesn't really matter.
January 16, 20206 yr My philosophy these days with the prices of PC Hardware the way it is, is the same as it is with cars. I won't buy a new car again. I am currently looking for a car for my wife but it will be a used car. I find that working a generation behind the bleeding edge of computer technology is a far more copacetic place to be. 2 hours ago, Evros said: My 8600k @ 5.4GHz What? January 17, 20206 yr At the end of the day budget, and what you will be doing is more important I think. Dedicated sim only box and the money is there it’s hard to argue with top of the line intel. Content creation and gaming on a budget...hard to argue with the 3rd gen Ryzen units......competition has now given us the ability to not have a one brand fits all, especially if you do more than sim on the box.... Most can hit 5GHz without a sweat and go beyond. Mine is a golden sample that can do 5.4GHz with 1.26v (under load, LLC corrected). It's currently shelved and I'm rather sad to keep a processor like that unused. Edited January 17, 20206 yr by Evros

January 17, 20206 yr As i don't do only Flightsim I would without hesitating go for the AMD. The single fact that Intel did nothing except for raising the prices in the last years pushes me towards AMD so hard that my decision is clear.
January 17, 20206 yr I also, am thinking of leaving intel for amd, leave my 8086k not upgrading to 9th or future 10th gen intel and switch to amd platform Ivan Majetic ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO; 7900X3D; NZXT KRAKEN ELITE 360, GIGABYTE RTX 4080; G.SKILL TridentZ NEO RGB DDR5 64 Gb, WD HDD 2TB, SAMSUNG 980PRO, SAMSUNG 970EVO Plus 2x, ALIENWARE 3423DWF
