But the more important aspect for a pandemic situation is that the widespread use of even a loose fitting surgical mask can help stop the pandemic. Actually Kevin, you said, and I quote... Quote Again, the mask is not about protecting yourself. It is to keep infected people from spraying the virus out. Hence why I pointed out that a mask does indeed protect the wearer. Quote The mask stops him from spreading it. Yes, I think most of us in this thread know that. Some good news in my neck of the woods. Went to two supermarkets and it seems that supplies are recovering. Shelves reasonably well stocked now. But no toilet roll of course. Edited March 21, 20206 yr by martin-w

Yes, I think most of us in this thread know that. I was way past that part. That was your nitpick with me? Which is funny because I’d already given that point up that they protect you. Since everybody argues that only n95s work, and we don’t have any. I just want impress that even so, any kind of mask will work to stop spreading it, which is just as, if not more, important. If everybody knows that, then why isn’t everybody wearing one? Edited March 21, 20206 yr by KevinAu

My only qualification is that I read, I look, I listen, I accept, and I think. I never asked you what you ‘are’ and won’t and do not care. We are equals here and present our points and arguments on their own merits and logic. If you find a hole in my logic or argument, then present it. And let me defend it or acquiesce. I’ve never dismissed anybody here as an ‘armchair’ whatever. That kind of arrogance is not for me. I’ve only spoken of my credentials on a topic if directly challenged and if it is relevant. I have a relative in Wuhan who died from this virus during the summer. Not everything the governments tell you is true or complete. You would be an armchair epidemiologist indeed if you wouldn't state your qualifications. I understand from your post that you have none. So be it. It helps assessing what you say. This is not about being right and wrong in a discussion. This is about being careful in anything we say these days because some many nonsenses are floating around and knowing that that more knowledgeable people than you and me make recommendations based on scientific observations and research. You advise things which seem to me in contradiction with the recommended practices. About China. I know a little bit about it. I lived there (and I loved it). Her brother in wuhan died from an ‘unknown respiratory infection’ in june 2019. It’s not about being right, it is about sounding an alarm and averting a really really bad outcome. Which is what we are indeed headed for. And the only people we have to blame is ourselves. Our arrogance will be our epitaph. Unless we do things differently. If you disagree with mandating everybody wearing masks, as they do in South Korea, please explain why. Other than it is not recommended in America and then saying I am an armchair whatever that word is. Because that is not a reason. Edited March 21, 20206 yr by KevinAu

Painful times for everybody living in France or China or Italy etc. . Never had the chance to go to Wuhan in my travels in China. But I can easily imagine the ordeal that the people of this city went through. I know, from first hand, the callousness of the regime. Not from the newspapers or TV. Secondly, I will not discuss anything with you. Sorry, my friend. I consider this dreadful emergency deserves better than cafeteria talks to remake the world. I try to rectify obvious nonsenses (like the pandemic being an invention of the medias, that it is nothing more than a flu etc.) and, for you, to put in perspectives advices which seem to me in contradiction with recommended practices. Years ago here, I remember getting in big long arguments with people here because I would say ‘pitch controls speed’ and that the puppy mills cranking out 200 hr fo wonders for the airlines using ‘pitch for altitude’ procedures from their first flights was going to lead to bad outcomes. That these guys won’t know how planes fly and they will not have the correct reflexes to save a bad, unexpected, unintentional situation. Then the q400 crashed in buffalo and the a330 crashed into the atlantic. And it turns out they were flown by puppy mill grads who’s reflexes were pitch for altitude and power for speed. So they did not know what to do in a bad, unexpected, unintentional situation. Edited March 21, 20206 yr by KevinAu

March 21, 20206 yr I've heard from the director of nursing at one of our local hospitals... the virus seems to be spreading rapidly in our area via petrol pumps. So take care when you fill up, wear the plastic gloves provided.

Observed a person remove one glove with their protected hand and grab the other glove by the palm. Not good. As a First responder we are taught how to dawn and remove PPE properly. March 21, 20206 yr To mask or not to mask, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler not to mask and perhaps To suffer the slings of outrageous viruses Or to take up the mask against a sea of troubles And let those who oppose them to die - to sleep No more, and by a sleep to say we end. **************************************************** Reading all the opinions on masks here I am confused as to whether the protection is inhaling or exhaling or, perchance, both. I am confused on how the masks work. Are they one way valves that protect others from exhales or do they protect you while inhaling? Having worn cheap masks you buy at the hardware store to wear while operating power saws and sanders I was under the impression they were to prevent me from inhaling sawdust, not to protect the machines from whatever I might exhale. Common sense tells me the masks work both ways. Am I wrong? Noel Edited March 21, 20206 yr by birdguy The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
