This is excellent news, I've got all my games on Steam. Seamless patching and upgrading. No muss no fuss. Hopefully a lot of the addons will be released via Steam as well.

word not allowed, I preordered already...

This actually word not allowed me off. I pre-ordered thinking that they would be my only option to purchase from (Microsoft store) because they said they had no timeline for the steam store. What the heck....

Can I get a refund from the Microsoft store if I haven't installed the software yet? Like I haven't even installed the 20mb file.

If I may ask, do you need to have the store open in order for the games the launch, do they launch the client along with them, or is it unneeded?

Microsoft store is always technically open, it’s part of the core OS. It’s what updates all the built in apps that don’t need windows update, like Calculator, or Photos.

So no you don’t need to open it, as it’s always there.

Any game/app you get off the store can be launched without having that window open.

When I start it up it opens in a separate window which does take some time to load, but I think I see what you mean. Just to make sure, no separate window is opened when starting or closing the game, right?

Why? Whats the different?

With getting it on Steam? Not much really, but this is not to say there is no problems at all (see below). In fairness, Steam is very reliable, it is a pretty good source for genuine user reviews, and it is undeniably a neat way to store/install/uninstall your game, so it's not as though I am not a fan of it in general.

Having used Steam a lot, for literally years - I just checked my Steam account a second ago and I have well over 150 games/sims in my Library on Steam, which ought to tell you that I do quite like it - I would perhaps be cautious about the potential for delays on updates as this is the only real (and admittedly its pretty minor) issue, in that sometimes if you buy something direct from the developer and a patch comes out, you of course tend to have that patch the moment the developer releases it, but sometimes with Steam stuff, it has on occasion taken a while for that patched version to trickle down to your Steam Library of stuff.

Another thing which is not great about Steam and a flight simulator (in this example Dovetail's FSX-SE), is that you can find many companies which offer a Steam version of their FSX product and a regular version of it too. Generally speaking, the Steam version will be available directly through Steam as well as through external web stores, whereas the regular version will be available on various flight sim web stores, but not on Steam. There's usually a price difference between the two, with the Steam version invariably being cheaper. Great huh? Not always...

So why not buy the Steam version on Steam and have it auto-install right? Well, yes it is convenient in this way, but what you often find, is the Steam version of the product is chopped down and doesn't have as many features, and there is a reason for this - copyright. So, it is quite common to find an add-on aeroplane for FSX which comes with 20 liveries in its non-Steam version, but in the Steam version, there will only be ten liveries because the Steam version is not cleared for copyright distribution because of the ever so slightly different way in which it distributes and handles files. But this isn't the only issue with flight sim TPD stuff via Steam. Similarly, when I bought Active Sky for my copy of FSX SE, via Steam, and then later wanted to upgrade it and take advantage of a discount which HiFi were offering, the registration method of the products via Steam, and the serial number for this, meant that the discount was unavailable for the Steam version (and it had cost the same as buying it externally), whereas if I had bought it externally, off for example, Just Flight's web store, I would have qualified for the discount. And it was quite a significant discount I missed out on with this annoying fact. So this is an example of where buying via the Steam interface really shot me up the @ss and in fact it prompted me to never buy any flight sim TPD stuff via the Steam interface for FSX again, instead always doing so externally.

Having said this, I did buy XPlane 11 via Steam, and that is undeniably convenient because XPlane 10 when I bought a physical copy of that, it that came on about ten million DVDs (admittedly it was nicely presented in a case), whereas all I have to do with XPlane 11 on Steam, is click play and it downloads it super-rapid and installs it without me having to do anything. But with this said, as with FSX, I've always bought stuff for XPlane from external sources rather than through Steam, for the same reason.

Whether this sort of thing will be the case with the new sim is another matter, but it is why, if given the choice between getting the sim through Steam and not, I'd prefer not to go through Steam. And before anyone says it, this is not me hating on Steam, these things I've mentioned which put me off it for flight sim are facts and personal experience with Steam, which as I say, I have used for literally years and I generally have no objection to it.

So this is just FYI for anyone - don't say I didn't tell you about these potential pitfalls.

Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

I wonder if the Steam client is simply a launcher which transfers you to the MS store to launch the sim from anyway?  And if it is a Steam version of the game stored on the Steam servers then will updates be concurrent or lag behind somewhat?

I have not pre-ordered yet, no rush to really though I will buy it a few days before launch, but I'd like to know the specifics of the different versions before I choose where to buy it from.

None of Microsoft’s products on Steam currently do that.

The most you’ll probably need is to log into your Microsoft account in sim to use the online features, that’s how Halo does it at least.
