Article: Asobo Supporting MSFS for at LEAST 10 years

Featured Replies

These 10 years of Asobo support statement, remember me when 3dfx was warranting their graphic cards for 10 years. We'll be lucky if Asobo will support FSXX for the next 2 years, at least. In my opinion the problem is not Asobo, but Microsoft.

Missing the PMDG DC6 in MSFS 2024 (she's here, but...).

Even if it's a niche title, evidently the budget was very big. 1 million users was a great start for 2 weeks in, but they will need a lot more (along with DLC sales) for a corporation like Microsoft to consider it a success. Unless they are looking into using the same technology for other projects, which means they were going to make the investment anyway.

And, in your opinion, what is the problem, and why on earth Microsoft?

LOL, FSXX.. thats the problem, these thumb sucked self made-up names.

Asobo is supporting MSFS, as their team calls it, not a fantasy name.

Indeed, MSFS is a technology demonstrator for their Azure Bing scenery, & I'm sure that technology will be exploited

Also, they are targeting the Xbox console users, about 60 million of them..

You're not "supporting" a game when you're developing it, and it would be a wildly obtuse way of ACTUALLY saying you're supporting it for approximately 6 years.

"Anything can happen" is why you sign a contract with the studio for 10 years, which I suspect is why Sebastian says they are supporting it for AT LEAST 10 years - because that's what their current contract is for.

Did you actually read the OP or the article? Asobo are essentially confirming they are contracted to work on the sim post-release for at least 10 years, which means the entire point is it's not just a "promise".

Your movie analogy makes no sense, because they also mention that it has already sold over a million copies - which I suspect is more than living up to expectations.

The contract means absolutely nothing if MS ends up losing money because of the Azure streaming costs.

They’ll just buy themselves out of the contract and cut the losses. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen but the promise isn’t relevant at all.

Welcome to capitalism. Is this your first rodeo?

Azure streaming costs.

That is the cheapest part of the expense for MS.

maybe it's his first rodeo in IT expenses 101?
(I do azure billing monthly for my company, much to my dismay and agony 😆)

This.

Promises like this mean nothing if the financial side doesn't work out.

You see that when movies are released and the studio is so confident that it claims the sequel is already greenlit to show how amazing the first movie must be. If the movie then fails to live up to expectations, guess what happens.

Yeah it's gotta be a bummer that it's already sold a million copies.

Ask Boris Johnson...

Is this 1M fact, from Microsoft, or heresy from another?

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/09/03/microsoft-flight-simulator-is-the-biggest-game-launch-in-xbox-game-pass-for-pc-history-with-over-1-million-players-to-date/

They made sure to emphasise the fact that the simulator reached 1 million players and not copies, and that it was the biggest Xbox Game Pass for PC launch title to date.

That was on 3 September, while the French interview was on 17 September. If it was a great success for the Xbox Game Pass, it doesn't seem very likely that they reached 1 million copies sold in just two weeks after that. Especially since it was removed from the Steam Top Sellers list rather rapidly a few days after its release.

Thought so..

1 million players is not 1 million sales.

So, if 50 thousand people played 20 times each, in a month, that's 1M users. OK, far from 1M sales.

So, every time you start or restart the game, it counts that as a use. You reboot 5 times during a session, that's 5 uses. That makes better sense than sales of 1M.

I seriously doubt this.

Every player, whichever edition he uses, has a gamer's tag. I would suppose they count these. So, yes, gamepass users are included, but only once and not every time they start the game.

Kind regards, Michael

from the article,

"We have already sold more than a million copies of Flight Simulator, and it should sell even more due to the very good feedback we received. So Asobo is doing well," says the company's CEO."

The whole article is behind a paywall (in french). Now that is a big lost-in-translation is he means they had 1 million players in french.

FSX sold over a million copy`s with less investment and again nearly another million on steam.
