Are the AVSIM forums really toxic?

I am from England,

Thank you for your kind words. As many European boomers, I was fascinated by American culture when I was a teen and I am fond to say that I‘ve learnt English not at school but in Mad magazine 😉 and in a family I stayed with in Croydon UK for the summer holidays.

My first impression was that the atmosphere here is a little tense.  Not really toxic, but not most inviting.

First impression was wrong!  Read over many threads since then, in different sub-forums, and my opinion about AVSIM changed to a positive one.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute so thoroughly to the debate. Glad to see that a newcomer sees the forum as an old timer.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:-

English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain

Can I kindly remind you that English carries a lot of Latin (not to say French 😋) words brought by that guy who came from Normandy around 1066... And he was no wandering minstrel.

Which suddenly reminded me....

In Everquest 2 there was a cavern called hidden cache where to begin the quest you had to kick a cat, who thereafter was often eaten by local monsters as it tried to run away. I cringed, and could never do it! 🙀

I have heard the cat has since been replaced with a (less politically incorrect) bucket of fish.

I thought it was the Hugenoughs that bought most of the French language to England

But he was a real word not allowed,  in every sense of the word.

My French never got to the stage of your English despite suffering six years in school of it .   I guess reading Mad magazines in French lessons did not help. But that was so long ago that it was probably more like Quebec French.

Onto snowflakes now ... oh how a topic can evolve, transform, mutate ... it’s actually pretty interesting.

I think it’s funny when someone tries to use “snowflake” as a derogatory term, they obviously don’t understand the science behind how snowflakes form and the rather organized crystalline structure that allows them to survive rather harsh conditions ... if anything it’s a compliment ... but I suspect those using the analogy incorrectly don’t really care to much about facts and science.

Cheers, Rob

Except snowflakes disappear quite quickly when they're under a little heat, hence the analogy is correct in my opinion!

Best way to keep a snowflake on board? Stay chilled man.

Now, where's the bar?  Show me to the bar.

One man's "absurd complaint" is another man's "legitimate complaint". Are we going to start criticising people for having different opinions?

I think you and I both know that espousing the idea that FS5 had a more realistic flight model than MSFS is ridiculous. It's also not an opinion. That's one of the barriers to discussion that's cropped up over the last decade or so. People get confused over the difference between an opinion and a fact. Stating that FS5's flight model was more realistic than MSFS is a statement of fact, not an opinion. It's also wrong.

Further, the idea that all opinions are equally valid is ridiculous and needs to go away. In my niece's opinion, her professors were mean for giving her bad grades after she spent her first college semester skipping class. That's an idiotic opinion, and far less valid than my opinion that she should stop skipping school.

Yes, everyone has the right to their own opinion (not their own facts) but that means I can also hold the *opinion* that their opinion is stupid.

What do you mean "start"  The world has been at this for milleniums. LOL Probably started before we could write.

I think it is time to accept that this debate is largely about gamers vs simmers, however you define those.  It is also time to accept that the two protagonists will never see eye to eye and that they look at simming from two entirely different perspectives, Neither of which are wrong.  What is "wrong" is the perceived intolerance of each others views, and that is sad, because whilst there is more than enough room, here and elsewhere, for all points of view, there is a demonstrable paucity of politeness is SOME posts.

Again, this may be a generational thing as I have said before, and, may well be generally accepted as a "new" normality.  I would actually prefer to retain my olde worlde standards and  values, which is my right to retain. What is NOT my right, is to try to enforce those held standards and values on others.

Live and let live and the best reaction, to my mind, to anything I consider impolite, irrational or just offensive, is to NOT react. You cannot hurt anybodys feelings that way.

Ha. Ha.  Mad magazine.  I can one-up you.  I have learned (I'm American, I do not say "I've learnt") some French from Monty Python/Holy Grail.  heh.  Except I'm not sure fetchez is really French, maybe their humorous slang.

fetchez la vache!

Quoi?

The debate is, is avsim a welcoming place to newcomers whatever they are, casual or more involved in the simulation dimension of the game.  Does the general ambiance (for lack of a better word) good enough to encourage them to stay, do the regulars have a proper attitude towards them. This is the debate. Not a bad one. A little soul searching hasn’t hurt anyone.

The best answer of this long thread was given above by a real newcomer, ivng.

Generational thing ? You find courtesy and boorishness at any age. Intolerance too even if people get generally mellower with age.

Not to react to idiotic or offensive posts ? Yep, do that all the time.   I didn’t  see any on this thread. A hot debate of people having different views.
