Guess I was too far away and the ocean muffled the explosion. Guernsey was occupied by the Germans during the war of course, so not sure if this was a German or British bomb. https://www.itv.com/news/channel/2020-11-16/royal-navy-divers-to-destroy-suspected-wwii-bomb-in-guernsey
November 17, 20205 yr Author It was US! Those dastardly Americans. "Divers from the Royal Navy safely detonated the United States Mk 54 depth at 12:05pm, which was found near the QE2 marina last week. The object may have been undisturbed on the seabed for more than 70 years." Edit: think this was it... I guess a US aircraft dive bombed a ship and missed. Edited November 17, 20205 yr by martin-w
November 17, 20205 yr Depth charge... dastardly U-Boats! Mind you we will never know if the ordnance was launched against a target and failed to go off, or was jettisoned (by accident or on purpose). And very nice people they are at the Aero club too. There was a moment a while back when I may have had to get myself and cat back to EGBB. A kind man at the Aero club was going to fly me and my favourite feline back to Birmingham. Corona of course, so he wouldn't have been able to leave the aircraft after landing, otherwise, upon returning to Guernsey he would have had to self isolate for two weeks.
November 17, 20205 yr As I understand it, there is a lot of unexploded WW II ordnance in and around Europe. My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.
November 17, 20205 yr Undetonated WWII bomb found and needs to be dealt with? Just your average day in Germany. 🙃

November 18, 20205 yr Author Actually, just over a month ago, in Poland, an unexploded wartime "earthquake bomb" exploded while attempts were being made to defuse it. It was the largest unexploded bomb ever found. " The RAF dropped the Tallboy or "earthquake" bomb in a raid in 1945 which sank the German cruiser Lützow." 5.4 tons this guy weighed. 19 feet long. thankfully none of the divers were harmed. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-54522203 Edited November 18, 20205 yr by martin-w
November 18, 20205 yr Author How about this for an unexploded bomb story... My father. In the home guard. 17 years old. German bomb landed with a timing mechanism. This would have been in Birmingham. He lived in Spark Brook, so around that vicinity. May have been a raid targeting the various factories. So my poor dad and his friend had the unenviable duty of guarding this unexploded time bomb untill bomb disposal arrived. And it was ticking! Yikes! Clearly not fun in the home guard. On one occasion he was riding his bike in an air raid. Bomb exploded nearby and shrapnel hit his tin helmet and knocked him off his bike. Thank god for that helmet, or I wouldnt be here to tell you about it.
