I mentioned that to illustrate the point I was making concerning sweeping generalisations (on all sides of the coin) and how they can be used to distort what people actually mean; noting too in this regard, that Connery was not making a sweeping generalisation on this subject as people have tried to claim on a regular basis. He quite clearly said that he absolutely did not advocate abuse and was talking about a specific situation.

In short, when asked about the subject in an interview, he was honest enough to address the reality of the subject, rather than just spout convenient PC platitudes where everything is always black and white with no complex nuances. Anyone who doesn't understand this, or worse, tries to score cheap points against Connery with childish oversimplifications or edits of what he said, is either missing the point or deliberately skating over it.

That wasn't what Connery said though, so not relevant.

He wasn't talking about defending himself from a physical attack. He clearly stated that if a women was argumentative, and you gave her the last word, but she was being provocative by not letting it go, it was okay to hit her. This unacceptable statement was nothing to do with self defence, of which we all have the right to, regardless of sex.

No! It's not okay. Everyone of us, whether male or female has a right to self defence. If you are in danger of bodily harm from a women, then yes, you have a moral and legal right to defend yourself.

I had a friend, some years ago, that suffered domestic abuse from his girlfriend. She burnt his back with an iron, stabbed him with scissors and stamped on his foot with stiletto's. He didn't defend himself, I recall because he was  frightened of her bully boy brothers. So yes, men do suffer this way and have every right to fight back.

Oh yes, I recall that event. It's mentioned in the following, rather good UFO documentary...

Wind it back if it starts in the middle, fellow alien lovers.

Fascinating just how many nuclear missile launch sites have had UFO's hover over head and shut down the missiles. has happened all over the world.

I wish an alien would pay a visit to my house for a cup of tea, a twix bar, and a good natter. I would love to know the latest news from the galactic suburbs.

Somewhere in the bowels of an external drive I have all 212 episodes of The X-Files. I'm going to bail out of this thread and go re-watch those. At least until Mulder slaps Scully.........

Chris, please understand that aliens do not like twix bar's. They like Cadbury's Dairy Milk and sometimes Cadbury's Fruit and Nut. 

What's the first thing you would ask an alien? I would ask what powers their craft and how they manage to travel a multitude of lightyears in a reasonable time frame.

It is relevant, precisely because it concerns what he did and did not say. I never claimed it was what he said, I wrote it to illustrate a point, the point being that I asked the people who said that there would never be any circumstance ever where you would attack a woman, would such a belief include that circumstance I mentioned. Clearly not. So we've established that there are indeed circumstances where it would not be abuse, but self defence.

Thus it further clarifies the point that sweeping generalisations are not the same as statements with a qualifier, which is what Connery's comment actually was, but people disregarded these qualifiers and claimed his statement was a generalisation concerning the subject, and this in order to twist what he said into somehow meaning he was all in favour of slapping women around for no reason other than abuse. And that, is not even close to what he said.

In saying all this, I'm in no way defending abusive behaviour, whether it be from a male or female, nor am I suggesting that Connery was some kind of saint, but what I am doing, is pointing out that people have cherry-picked bits of Connery's comments, and allied them to a PC black and white over-simplification of the matter; a fantasy-world where women can never be abusive or violent, when we know they can be. In fact, I hear about it all the time from my partner, because she is a social worker who deals with that kind of thing on a daily basis.

Trouble is it was pretty much the same every week. Wasn't that keen on it to be honest. Give me an episode of DS9 any day. 🙂
