TBM 930 - directional control on touchdown

Featured Replies

Hi All

I am struggling with keeping my TBM on centreline after touch down.

As soon as the aircraft touches the runway it veers to the left and then as I apply right rudder it veers the other way and I use up most of the pavement before I finally get the thing back on centreline

I have checked my Pedal sensitivity for the rudder but hasn't cured it

Sensitivity + 50% / -50%

Deadzone 10%

Any tips welcomed please

This is a general issue with the sim and how the aircraft interacts with the ground friction.  Some aircraft are worse than others and depends on wind direction/speed.  The easiest thing I have done is to use the 'Takeoff Assist' option.  Sorry, cannot recall exact name for it but it keeps the aircraft straight on the runway.  Not realistic but it's a better experience than fighting the airplane all the time on the ground.  Asobo has acknowledged the issue but not sure how long before a fix will be implemented.

Thank you

Flic covered it. I find it worse if there is any type of crosswind. Same thing on takeoff, suddenly I am swerving towards the direction of the wind.

I never fly the TBM but rather the Cessnas or the Mooney or the like. Anyway, I have that issue, too. I'm not a real world pilot but I doubt it's realistic. I have all the other sims (P3D5, XP11, AF2 + their forerunners) and none of them shows that tendency to get off from the center line upon takeoff and landing, even without or with minor crosswind. Notably the excellent P3D5 A2A C172 doesn't show it.

We all know that propeller planes tend to deviate to the left upon takeoff, which can be observed in all sims, but this is something else.

Kind regards, Michael

But lets not find it too easy to use lest we forget! That will leave Asobo off the hook for correcting the issue....

I don't get any swerving with the TBM (which is one of my favorites) and I do use the "Takeoff Assist" as the response without it is just plain wrong at this time.  It's not uncommon to get a little "swerve" into the wind once clear of the pavement on takeoff, but this is actually close to reality in a crosswind as the aircraft will weather-vane, especially if you've been holding some aileron into the wind.

On approach in crosswinds I've found the crab technique to work well with the aircraft and the diminishing affect close to the runway to also be somewhat realistic with a final adjustment with rudder and setting the windward wheel down first (though there are a lot of times where the crosswind almost "zeros out" just before touchdown.

no science just works well with my other aircraft

Read somewhere Asobo will be fixing the ground handling.  They apparently made it more of a binary thing where it either tries to move full left or full right though it wasn't totally clear if this was just for things like taxiing or also for what happens right now during takeoff and landing (though since we don't get a separate tiller/nosewheel steering I'm guessing it is the reason).

OHHH! found it, on 320 Sim Pilot's Discord server this is what he said.  Don't know if it came from a dev update or what.  So it's friction not the steering that's binary.

Great news for those who haven’t seen it, Asobo have mentioned the ground handling being too ‘binary’. Apparently at the moment tyre friction is either on or off, hence the ground difficulties. Looking forward to a fix for this!

I find that pressing firmly on both pedals during the takeoff roll helps a lot.  No idea if this correct real life procedure but it helps in the Sim. Even in real life I can remember some takeoff rolls in a 737 where you had a very pronounced left right movement as you hurtled down the runway!

Correcting with toe brakes rather than rudder while on the runway seems to introduce less instability.  When landing, applying full brakes seems to stabilize the airplane.

I avoid using the rudder until I am airborne..

Well I have done that inadvertently in the PMDG 737-8 and had a brake fire after takeoff and had to make an emergency landing but I suppose it might work on a GS aircraft.

There is an acknowledge bug but another part of the problem is where you are looking over the nose.  I had the same issue in real life training.  This video sums it up really well:

In MSFS I can keep it pretty straight even with a strong crosswind even.
