How do you choose your next flight?

Featured Replies

I always fly out of the airport I landed at. Depending upon how much time I have, I determine the greatest distance I want to fly. I always fly GA and normally like to have a view (so low rather than high). I do not use any planning tools. My mission is (1) hours, now at 890 and (2) as many airports as possible (420). Real world I figure this would have cost in expenses about $140,000 USD plus the cost of either renting or buying an airplane. My MSFS investment has a pretty good ROI!

This. I always fly out of where I landed. I just went across the Atlantic, again... want to do a summer Euro tour. I generally fly the same airplane, but sometimes I switch it up. I have found the TBM to be good, you can go high and fast, or cruise low with the power back. Can't wait for a good 3rd part GA airplane.

For the long hauls on Autopilot (Atlantic crossings) I throw on Netflix or a podcast. I enjoy it.

That's where it get's complicated, doesn't it?  I use Neofly for half my flights.  I've got a TBM 930, Cessna 182T, Mooney M20, Cessna CJ4, Bonanza G36, Cessna 208B, X-Cub, King Air, Cessna Citation Longitude, Baron, Diamond DA62, and finally a Cessna 172 (Steam gages).  They're scattered all over the western hemisphere.  For my Neofly flights I pick the highest paying flight within the range of the aircraft that's next in the lineup.

For the other half of my flights, I fly to the most populous cities in order for:  USA, Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Canada and Oceana.  I go on Travelocity and try to find commercial flights that match the route.  Of course, this means that I fly into hubs multiple times, like Charlotte, Dubai, Tokyo, Abu Dabbi, etc.  I use Simbrief for flightplanning and try to match the real world flights as closely as possible.  When I can't find real world flights I fly the Longitude, which is a nice aircraft for long distance.

    FSX and MSFS.

I open Little NavMap with the google maps addon. Just look around in there as its much nicer than the MSFS world map.  Pick an airport for departure, choose something in the sort of range I want and check the distance.  Once I'm happy with that I put it into simbrief to get an actual plan.  I don't currently use Little NavMap for anything other than that. Sometimes I'll leave it open to track the flight but Pilot2ATC does that anyway.

I've also used this https://fsdailies.azurewebsites.net/ in the past to just pick something random for me. Or as an idea to set something up myself.

Two extended trips that I have done recently.

First was based on the book The Cannibal Queen.  It is a areal trek around the US with great commentary (I have the entire route mapped out and in FLP form also).  I often read while actually flying the route in the sim and found the descriptions great as I looked out the window, I could see exactly what he was writing about.  Good fun (could not really do this in FSX as the ground detail simply was not there)

Second was the historic Lewis and Clark full round trip across the northern part of the US.  There is a great freeware package available with the flight plans, historic points, commentary, maps, scenery and other links.

This sounds very interesting. Where can I find this freeware package?

I'm also time limited so use a number of options to choose flights. My main one is that I'm flying around the world (in a rather circuitous route) and have been since MSFS was launched.  I've been using Neofly for most of that time as it allows me to choose short (or very short) flights that head in the direction I want to go.  It's mostly low and slow (although I did use something faster over the Arabian and Australian deserts and over the sea from Russia to the USA). I also use Fscaptain (not fully functional on msfs yet and only works of you still have P3D installed) for alternataive flights I like to take around the UK. I have skypark too which I've used about twice!

NeoFly also now has Campaigns, or at least one at this point. If you know the program most of it is FREE and there are a few other options you can buy. I think the entire thing at this point is $20.00 USD, for FBO options and a few other. Not sure if Campaigns are going to be DLC after this FREE one or not. I think it is in Russia too! Looks interesting. Just have to either fly there or transport there 🙂

I think THIS was it, but it maybe only one of the components, but I think that is it.  I don't have it anymore since I completed the routes

That's a great idea follow a sport and fly where the event is. Might do that for golf, as that is the sport I like to watch from about March to September, although most are in the USA, but you could follow the European Tour, etc.... I also like that Grand Tour Flight Planner too! Nice ideas everyone!
