As long as I've been living no two days look exactly alike.

Nope, you can set the same date and time and Weather Preset in MSFS and you will get the same picture.

Nope, but then again I don't know if that's the sim options or the sim itself locked to that vector resolution, since there is no info given on that score.

Sorry, I forgot to say that the settings are the same.

Wet surfaces still exist.

Yes, they do. That was my fault, because I had to try out many weather presets from SoFly's Weather Preset Pro, and I needed time to recreate the same situation as with SU4 (parking spot, date and time, viewing angle etc.) that the wet surfaces have dried in the sim.

Best regards,
Holger

I really don't get the fact that people are still ignoring the Degradation. Ok if you agree with Asobo, I can live with that. But just ignoring the down grade.........

I totally agree with you. With the first set of pictures, I had to check twice if the World Update for France has been installed due to the lack of quality in the mesh.

In fact, I don't understand why Asobo put many efforts to provide a reasonable mesh in the past World Updates (and for the next one, too! Jörg Neumann said in an interview that he is very happy with the elevation data provided by the official sources for Germany, Austria and Switzerland) if they downgrade the sim's visuals in such a drastic way. Missing mountains in the distance, flat mountains, transparent vectors with just trees - that kills the immersion when flying in moountainous areas.

Best regards,
Holger

The generic building details and textures are procedurally generated. They're not identical between every launch, the only thing that stays the same is the basic shape of the building.

In fact the second building on the left, you can even see that. 2 details that were originally facing the camera, are now on the other wall. They're not missing, they just moved places.

Like, I just loaded up KPUB myself, look how some of my textures are rendered/lined up differently, and the building I circled doesn't even have those doorways. And the far left building has a door texture that yours doesn't.

I can only think of purely commercial reasons. PC and XBox are two different markets. PC version came one year earlier and for one year they did their best to accommodate PC users preferences.

Now that one year has passed, basically all the PC users who are into flight simming bought FS 2020 (we were so thirsty after many years!) and it's time to accommodate the needs of XBox users, who are the potential buyers right now.

Don't you really see the difference between the first two images??

Hi there,

I am one of the lucky ones who does not experience any CTDs with SU5, but I am unhappy with the visual appearance...

First: Somewhere between Grenoble and Chambéry with World Update France installed

I tried to find the same place you were in these images following the GPS coordinates in your Su5 screenshot. (also embarassingly, I spend a good 3 minutes looking south trying to find where you were, before I realized you were looking north in your screenshot lmao)

This is on the ultra preset, no config tweaks, and my mountains are more detailed than in your SU5 screenshot. Not as detailed as your SU4 shot, but I'm also running at 1080p compared to your 4k, so that could hide some of the details.

What are your graphics settings at? There is an issue right now where the graphics settings aren't saving if you use the preset. You need to switch to another preset, and then back to the one you want for it to load correctly. If you modify any of the settings after switch to a preset (so the preset selector says 'custom') it seems to save fine.

Here's the same scene but at the high graphics preset, again, I haven't touched the config file

As expected, the differences are inconclusive for the most part. I do notice a difference in the reflections and after further study, in the clouds. But I really had to look for it. Which to me tells me is that these are good optimizations if I don't notice them until I look into it.

But I still agree that the "ultra+" setting promised and more sliders to decide visuals on PC would be very welcome for all.

The more I fly with 1.18.14.0, the more I see visual problems ... video is better to really show the issues, not screenshots.

Asobo also modified the behavior of when vegetation files are loaded from the community folder ... I used to be able to update them while MSFS was at the main menu, now a sim restart is required?  Seriously Asobo?  ... this one feels more like spite after my request to be able to do this "real-time" than anything else ... what reason could they possibly have to implement this specific change?

  • Cloud Reflections are squares
  • Shadow LOD is much closer so I can see shadows render as I fly (shadow chaser)
  • Strange thin horizontal line at the horizon that appears to be rendered foreground and will cut thru anything
  • Terrain shadows at 10% of left or right edge of the screen don't render so as one turns there is a sweeping shadow wave
  • My XBOX controller now drifts up or down when in Cockpit regardless of null zone settings (doesn't do it external view, just in Cockpit)
  • Still have to use a hack to get the menu tag to go away so I can record video and do screenshots without it
  • AI lights seem to have a massive glow at certain view angles (thought it was an airport beacon at first)
  • Changing view angle will now completely blow out the screen (way too bright)
  • Vegetation renders back to "normal" levels now but the LOD on tree detail has been reduced so trees lack detail
  • Coastline terrain morphs and shifts much worse than before

I have a hard time believing this also, these issues are really obvious and the response I've seen are "stop complaining" ... I wish I could have used that one when I was moderating LM's forums ... hey you "stop complaining" ... like that works?

I get that one loves MSFS and wants to promote the product, but please be realistic, blind optimism and faith isn't good at getting solutions to really obvious problems.  I have a Beta tester that doesn't want to test my product anymore because of these MSFS issues ... how can this be spun as good?

I've got video captured demonstrating these problems, happy to post it if people really aren't seeing these problems?

Rob.

Anybody who isn't blind (or doesn't have blind loyalty) can see all of that Rob.  There are lots of other issues also.  Lots of little ones, but they build up.

Some of the decisions made during SU5 defy belief.  They aren't all due to Xbox surely, just policy decisions made for some reason - only MS / Asobo will know the logic behind them it seems.

Vastly reduced draw distance.
Huge pop-in issues.
Buildings & objects made far simpler/less detailed.
Blurry ground textures.
Volumetric lighting missing.
Clouds details/looks vastly reduced.
Traffic reduced.
Odd lighting & saturation changes.
Water detail & reflections made even worse.

All with endless amounts of proof posted here already by hundreds of people with thousands agreeing with them & seeing the same. Elsewhere on other forums & sites pointing it out. Leaving reviews noting the downgrade on product pages.

It’s incredibly noticeable to the majority & no. The Ram isn’t being optimised well. For people with higher end machines (which is most people, especially considering Asobo sold the game that way), our systems & ram are barely being used.

Not happening here, haven’t touched the controller settings, using the default preset.

Same observation but only in the external views, not in the cockpit ! I almost went crazy trying in vain to correct this thing ! 😞

That's been an issue since the Japan World Update, and also affects terrain. Setting the wind speed to 10 knots or above helps diffuse them in the water.

Been an issue since pre-Alpha at least, it was very obvious in the X019 trailer. Will be fixed in 2022 (along with the atmospheric overhaul).

That started with the UK World Update, where they tweaked the steepness of the coastlines globally as a workaround for the water creeping up.

I'll concede the point after all this discussion on the failings of SU5.  Looking closer on my setup as well as the screenshots above mountains are indeed more rounded than SU4 no matter what you do with the settings.  Here's the rub, we spent months engaging ASOBO about this issue with mountains/terrain.  The initial release was fine but things degraded after each SU.  We finally got them to correct things around SU3 and most CTD's were gone at that point.  Now they went in a complete reversal with SU5 to fit this sim on XBOX.  Laziness is at hand wanting to have the same build/code for a console that works on a PC with little effort on their part to make a distinction.  PC's are more powerful and can produce graphics above and beyond what's possible on a console.  Yet we have a team that promised us they would not do this dumbing down of the sim for a console and here we are.  They are undoing their own hard work.

So, we all know in order to get Flight Simulator developed in the first place promises had to be made to Microsoft to finally bring it to XBOX.  This is the pound of flesh that came due.  Asobo needs to reconcile they can have core code that can work in both environments but they'll need to add more graphic optional settings when the software is installed on a PC.  Gutting all that hard work and advancement they've done over the last year is not the answer.  I'm hoping SU5 was a deadline that had to be reached with the movers and shakers at Microsoft and in the next few weeks up until SU6 they'll release hotfixes as they work out how to make the sim more adjustable for what platform it's running on.  I can't believe all that hard work they've done is suddenly null and void.  There's been no change in leadership on Asobo or Microsoft's side.  That's usually when you see something like this, someone trying to justify their job with bad/bright ideas.

For the first screenshots, i think thats the classic "settings not sticking" thing, as demonstrated by Tuskin. And i think a lot of downgrades people witness are due to that bug (not all mind you)
