@devgrp What should this be set to?

VSYNC on and set to 30fps in MSFS 2020:

Seems a bit smoother. This is with LOD of 2 and a rolling cache of 10gb.

This scenery pop-in  issue is really annoying doing circuits with trackIR ... you glance sideways at the runway and look back forwards again and all the trees and mountains take a few seconds to pop back into view.

Clearly this RAM saving featured was coded by people that just sit and stare straight ahead while flying.

I hope that FOV LOD slider goes to 360 degrees.

THIS is what bothers me....Look how ugly these mountains are with a LOD of 2.

Set to highest refresh and vysnc to application control. Also make sure to enable gsync for window and full screen

I don't think lod affects mountains like that. I think irs more the mesh that affects the mountains. But now you are in the green. You should be good now

Seems like it actually makes a big difference. LOD of 5

Yes.  I didn't see much at first, but then if you look at the central peaks, you can see the difference.

I hope the LOD cone is based on the velocity vector and not the angle that the camera is looking. If the cone is tied to the camera then we will see very minimal changes

Yup, terrain LOD is the perf killer if I take it up above 2.0 but it makes mountain peaks look much better. Object LOD I can crank to 5 without much perf hit and PG will load in much further out so you don't get the triangles while super close.

Why 360? The only real benefit of that would be when jumping between glance left and right. When panning with a hat switch or using the likes of track ir, I think 180 or even as low as 120 degrees would be sufficient.

Assuming your FOV is 60, you would only get 30 degrees of cached scenery before you would get items popping in and out. 120 degrees is not a lot

No it wouldn't. I use TrackIR and I want to be able to look around me while flying without the popping of scenery.

I'm on an ultrawide monitor and 120 degrees is definitely not enough. 180 would be an improvement, but you'd still see popping.

270 degrees might be sufficient.

Right now the sim is using 6 GB out of 24 GB VRAM. I can fit a lot more scenery in the video memory. There's absolutely zero point in restricting FOV. Just let us adjust it ourselves. There's no downside to that.

I just want to add this: The FOV needed depends on how fast the scenery is able to "pop in". If it happened instantly, we could work with a lower FOV, because it would already be loaded before you turn your head in that direction. But right now, on ultra, LOD 350, flying over Los Angeles, the scenery pops in like a blast wave from a nuke if I turn my head with TrackIR at a normal speed. If the scenery instantly appeared within a split second, the needed FOV would be lower.

Thanks, my monitor is 1440P with GSYNC. I tried locked at 30FPS with VSYNC ON and here are my results:

Also, I feel like it's even less smooth than locked at 45.

image.png

NO NO NO NO. You have Gsync - turn that vsync OFF! Your system appears to handle 40 - 45 fps locked...leave it that way and quit turning on vsync. You have an expensive monitor with the best tech available to stop stutters and tearing, which means you don't need to bother with vsync anymore.

The excruciating stutters when panning are a sim shortcoming introduced in SU5, and are not caused by your settings.
