For msfs, would you rather GPU or CPU

Featured Replies

Just curious, I’m looking at a new system and I have a couple in mind, but generally speaking, if you had to choose, would you prefer a better GPU with a lesser cpu or a better cpu with a lesser GPU?
Thanks

You need a balance. Having an overpowered GPU with an underpowered CPU is pointless since the CPU will be the bottleneck and vice versa. They both have to compliment one another.

ASUS ROG Maximus Hero XII ▪︎ Intel i9-10900K ▪︎ NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE ▪︎ 64GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro ▪︎ Windows 10 Pro (21H1) ▪︎ Samsung 970 EVO Pro 1TB NVME SSD (OS Drive) ▪︎ Samsung 860 EVO 2TB SATA SSD ▪︎ Seagate 4TB SATA HDD ▪︎ Corsair RMx 850W PSU

For MSFS, GPU makes a big difference for both fps and visual quality. Just know that there will be diminishing returns if your CPU is too far behind to keep it fed adequately - a balanced system would be best.

Edit: exactly as Captain said above!

Balance system is right but I would prioritize CPU over GPU for MSFS.

Thanks, guess I should clarify, would you choose one or the other assuming the system isn’t out of balance if you will, no major bottleneck.

I have the option of going with an I5 10400F with a rtx3060Ti or an I7 10700f with a rtx3060…I’m just getting my feet wet at this point and have these 2 as my options.

OP  is missing two other vital components.

VRAM and RAM.

As others have stated. A balanced system. If you drop a Corvette engine in a Ford Focus doesn't mean you're going to have a high performance sports car

I have just got a new pc i7 11000F, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB card.....FS2020 is all on ultra and it is unbeliebly smooth, its awesome, my old pc which was 10 years old was an i5 1060 ....the difference is incredible, I am so happy with my specs...had it built for me, if you have the pc to run fs2020 on high or ultra its a different ball game BIGTIME.........no stutters at all...........go for it!

I7 would have 12gb on the 3060 and the I5 would have 8gb on the 3060ti

Both systems would have 16GB, but not overly concerned about the ram as I can easily add more at an acceptable price point.

Don't get a laptop. Forgot to mention that.

Fogbound is on point .. liking all the responses here.

You can afford to have a slightly weaker card in this sim. What you cant afford is to have a beast card and an underpowered CPU. Now granted it is way harder to get a GPU right now so i understand if most people lean on getting the stronger GPU.. But if your going to go that route please plan to sell the CPU quickly and upgrade

Also most importantly the resolution that you intend to run is important.

1080p and 2k .. should be a pleasureable experience. If your planning to use those cards with the expectation of true 4k .. hmm not so much.

Your CPU is still really nice...I'd get a new GPU for sure (but good luck they're impossible to find) RTX 3080 Ti etc

monitor size is irrelevant when it comes to GPU. resolution is most critical though. 1080p is currently the lowest there is (apart from old museum style VGA). therefore no high loads on GPU at that low resolution.

I remember MS/Asobo saying at their MSFS launch press conference something like: get the best GPU you can afford, or along those lines. My GPU (RTX 3090) runs around 80%-90% load most of the time on my system (4K resolution and VR above 4K), but CPU (8 core 4.7 GHz) only around 40-50% generally speaking. therefore GPU is king @ 4K, for 1080P any old GPU will do.
