It is automatic. In addition, if you open the weather menu in sim, there is a button for Metar. This opens another menu that lets you select nearby airports and see what the metar is at that airport. November 18, 20214 yr Precipitation seems to be hit and miss. I've gone to a few airports where it's currently snowing or raining according to the METAR and there has been none. Some have had it, but more have not. Edited November 18, 20214 yr by Tuskin38

It's from more than 2 hours ago. It seems like the sim doesn't show old metars. The same happened to me with TIST, which was more than 3 hours old. I never really minded the sim not matching the METAR, because I'm all about variability because variability occurs in the real-world.
