Is it time to Outsource Weather Integration?

Featured Replies

I like the idea of using METAR data for temp, wind, and pressure at airports, and the predictive data to generate the clouds and weather systems.

Not enough time Jorge said.  Hotfix coming?

They needed more time they should have taken it instead of forcing a bug filled mess on the users.

Not enough time. It happens.

I repeat what I said, 'If they needed more time to avoid filling the sim with bugs that we will probably be stuck with for who knows how long, they should have taken taken. " Is that so hard to understand????

I will say, this update has left me questioning what lies ahead for the platform. Is that really what it's gonna be like, do we have to start at absolute zero and once again claw our way up through the most basic problematics in order to shape the simulator? Are we really at a point, a year and 3 months post release that they have to rush out these laughably bad updates that completely screw up the very fundamentals with novice tier mistakes, only to spit out a manure bucket of content for people to buy, only to proudly label it "the Game of the Year patch" and we're left with collapsed building of problems that we have no idea how long are going to go on for, especially knowing they cut testing short only to get it out the door?

Maybe it's just the bitterness of age that is slowly descending on me in a quiet evening hour but you really don't feel a lot of respect for the craft with updates like this. And yes, I absolutely think they should outsource as much as possible, to developers who spent years or even decades building up the knowledge about these things. Use it, stop trying to learn it all from the ground up again.

What MSFS is doing has never been done before. They have a great partner in  MeteoBlue. We just need to be patient.

Two posts that sum up the juxtaposition of where we sit as flight sim enthusiasts...
Both points of view equally valid and show how disparate MS/Asobo's target audience is. It breaks down to casual simmers/'gamers' willing to accept anything that looks even vaguely like a cloud and hi-fidelity simmers who want not only the conditions per the METAR of their local airfield, but identical to what it looks like outside their real world window and the rest somewhere in between.

The scope of the weather aspect of MSFS is fantastic - replicating weather fronts that cover a significant part of a continent, microbursts, etc. The implementation, however, is very hit and miss.
Personally, I believe that weather is an integral part of flying. Therefore a working weather engine should be included by default in the simulator. However, the apparent lack of knowledge of how to get weather to function properly in the sim after all this time is incredibly frustrating - I think it's time to open-up to third party developers or better still, buy-in their expertise to make default weather implementation even better than any third party offering we've seen in any sim to date.

I thought they fired the beta test team a week or two before they released SU7?

Not even 1 week!

Is it so hard to understand that programmers do not always, or even often, have the luxury of determining release dates?

"Get SU7 out on this date or you're fired/fined" is going to make them release SU7 on that date whether it's ready to go or not.

If you want someone to blame, find out who is setting stupid deadlines.

I am not blaming the programmers, I am blaming the people who decided to release it.

All Asobo need to do is fix bugs and smooth out transitions between the worldwide Meteoblue data and the new METAR data. This will be done (by them) in time.

As for releasing the new weather iteration now, in an imperfect form, the release schedules, priorities, and overall direction of the project are determined by the publisher, Microsoft, not the developer, as I keep saying (and someone else has just said, too).

Unfortunately others are, clearly, as they're asking for another team to step in and take over on the development side -- another team who would be subject to the same constraints and scheduling.

No. From what I know of both posters you quoted, neither are what you’d call casual gamers. Also many ‘hardcore’ simmers only care about the metars. Many ‘hardcore’ simmers care more about global weather that affects the majority of their flight.

I highly doubt many Avsimmers use MSFS for casual gaming.

Seems that this is a time estimation problem.  Very common on large projects. ☘️

Are you saying because I am not crying bloody murder that I am a casual flight simmer ? I just never could understand the amount of drama that gets generated every day. They did this Metar integration as a first step of many steps to address the weather.  We just need to be a bit more patient.
