I almost sent an head tracker back.

Gave it for Christmas. Would not turn on. An email to GrassMonkey sent back suggestion that Windows privacy settings may be wrong.

Sure enough. Settings / Privacy / Camera / Allow Access was off. Sliding to ON and it works great. On watching it in action I think I might actually like the GrassMonkey Puck better than TrackIR, mainly for the many OpenTrack settings and the modified webcam receiver.

I have still yet to try mine because I am doing a new PC build.  One of my concerns was the refresh rate, only 25Hz I believe.

Does it appear a bit jerky when you turn your head?  As 30fps locked in my sim and 25Hz on the camera panning might not be a good mix.

It looks smooth to me. They have a 30 day return policy on their website and youtube page. But at Christmas they are a little more lax about the time allotted. I don't see any issue with lack of smoothness when turning the view compared to panning the view with a button assigned to a joystick. It all seems to work better than a TrackIR which I had to fiddle with all the time when I used that.

He's a one man manufacturing company (his eBay site says over 900 sold).

But, what's the final veredict ?  Is it a good buy ?

I have found the GrassMonkey one great value - I had the Track IR to start with but with the ambient light where I have my desk set up it was a real bugger.

Also I found that using the supplied puck - which is battery powered I sometimes(hmmm) forgot to switch the battery off - so lots of battery replacements.

To get rid of that problem I found a mob in the UK who do a light weight stainless steel point tracker set up that is powered by a USB - since then no probs at all - it occasionally has a little hissy fit - but switching the software off & on sorts it out.

All in all a great little number - well recommended

I must state that I have never tried TrackIR but opted for the Puck instead (so I cannot compare the two. I am totally happy with it - there is no jerkey movements - all head tracking is smooth. And using his video on how to set it all up was just perfect!

I don't get the difference between the puck and the..box? Odyssey?

I brought the puck & PS3 kit in Nov 2020 and I can tell you that Roger is one of the nicest guys to deal with.

I have been thinking about picking up the new camera as it has a much wider field of view than the PS3 I currently have. I very nearly pulled the trigger on a TrackIR but I am glad I didn't, especially at the price they are charging here in Canada !

For me it has been a great buy. I got one shipped to Denmark for Xmas, so have been using it for some weeks now.

  • It arrived in a sturdy cardboard box with bubble wrap.
  • All the kit is in black ‘fly-under-the-radar’ type plastic. Quite robust.
  • Setup was easy - completely plug and play.
  • Roger has a video on Youtube guiding you through the setup with OpenTrack. 10 minutes.
  • Profiles for OpenTrack are provided on his website too.

The systems works like charm and tracking is super smooth for me. It’s quite nice that you can turn the puck on and off while flying, and it will just stop tracking... and there are no wires!

I can highly recommend it although it is my only head tracker experience.

It is only the shape.  It is just cosmetic and personal choice.
I went for the puck as I thought I might make me look less of a dick with the round box on my head rather than square, but the wife says it isn't working!

The Odyssey and the puck work the same, I love the system a bargain.

I published this video before, but here it is again. Shows how smooth the GrassMonkey system is on a 4 screen setup...

As stated right on the product listing...

"The Odyssey IR operates just like the Puck IR, but in a different style. The Puck has a twist-on battery cover and the Odyssey has a snap-on battery cover."

Surely this shows how smooth TrackIR is? And the puck is just a target?

When you buy "The Puck" it comes with a link to freeware OpenTrack, a specific version in fact and a set of presets that work well in FS2020 and other presets for other games or sims.

TrackIR is another product that is more expensive and seems to have more problems with FS2020 at least from what I have read on this board.

I was just commenting on your video (or whosever video it is), which says it's showing TrackIR. I assumed it was a TrackIR using the GrassMonkey 'puck' as a target.
