Asobo is hopefully already looking at this: clouds/weather

Exactly. Like in this case how to NOT do it. Sorry, couldn't resist, just joking. 😉 You are right: there is always something to learn. And anyone that doesn't know that probably has the most to learn. 😜

I'm not sure I fully understand the intent of your post, but I agree that those clouds could use some improvement.

Other sims need a heck of a lot more cloud improvement though.

I was given a warning for incorrectly stating user Janov posted the linked comment in the OP but as one can see it was actually Jean-Luc, RXP.  Please forgive this oversight.

Click Bait, that was the intent.

OMG, really?  When I read that post there and even saw the image and Jean-Luc's comments I thought this was something lacking in MSFS weather and cloud depiction and was excited to learn perhaps LR has found a way to have a much better method to form clouds themselves.  I've always felt clouds were lacking in distinct morphology, others have commented similarly, so I posted to make others aware there may be better ways to depict clouds.  I don't know why that information would not be welcomed.  To me clouds/weather are a full 1/3 of the entire flight sim product and certainly there has been less that sterling satisfaction with clouds/weather in MSFS.

Is MSFS2020 called Cloud Simulator?  Or Flight Simulator?  Nit picking anyone?

Like Train Simulator without tracks.

I don’t think that Asobo is looking at other sims to get ideas from.

They have their ToDo list which they follow….

That's like stating: "Apple does not look at, care, or otherwise have any interest in what Google is doing with its Google Maps [app]."

Do you truly believe that's the case and, more specifically, the case with regard to the folks at Asobo vis-a-vis LR?

If a company is unaware of the things that "the competition" is doing (debate aside as to whether LR represents competition) with regard to similar products shared across a common customer pool, then that company is woefully remiss IMHO.

Is MSFS 2020 a flight simulator or a weather simulator?  Let's keep the main thing the main thing.

Roy

I wish it were more of a weather simulator.  Weather is THE biggest factor in aviation.

| Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

Even super computers can fail in the weather department.  MS could easily blow its MSFS devel budget seeking the illusive "perfect weather".

We're not asking MSFS to design an engine that will accurately predict weather next week. We're asking it to have more than 2 types of clouds and not suddenly pop from rainy to clear skies.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Jean-Luc's comment, "the following XP12 preview screenshot shows they are generating volumetric clouds which, IMHO, are not only not shy of any other volumetric cloud in any other title but are also portraying an underlying meteorological phenomenon precluding their generation..." presumably was his guess based on the screenshot--and that was my impression when I saw it as well.

What I wonder about is if there is sufficient data available representing 'underlying meteorological phenomenon' to be able to do this.  It's really hard to believe there would be, but perhaps there is a minimum amount to be able to influence how cloud morphologies generate.  Worth keeping an eye on and right now and I'll be amazed if indeed this is the case.

And as able, utilize algorithms to better approximate the types of clouds relative to conditions.  That is a big ask it seems, but not being privy to what they have to work with, don't really know.

Maybe you are talking about this?

Pretty much what x-plane 12 weather system is going to be, at least according to Austin.

XP 12 might have good looking clouds, shame the rest of it looks like word not allowed.

One of MSFS plus points, but also one of its negative points, is the photogrammetry.  Sometimes good, but sometimes ugly as hell.  Often the advice is to turn it off for the look and performance.  With photogrammetry off, you have a world of autogen - autogen that is is the right place to clearly show villages, towns and cities.  Together with correctly placed roads, rivers, rail and trees, a realistic view of the world is produced - good enough for VFR navigation. XPlane 12 based on Autogen, will no doubt look fantastic.

If XPlane 12 does indeed have advanced lighting and weather, with a good flight model, you have an exciting simulator.  Satellite scenery is of course icing on the cake, something MSFS can't be beaten on, but this fact alone does not relegate a simulator to the bin for those of us who do not worship at the alter of the one and only true flight sim.  I personally fly regularly in just a few areas of the globe.  No doubt those areas will be covered with satellite scenery from the likes of Orbx.

This is an exciting time for flight simming. MSFS is a superb simulator with some super aircraft coming in 2022.  I will absolutely be buying many of these aircraft and supporting MSFS going forward.  I will also be buying XPlane 12 on day one and be enjoying the unique features it brings to the table - being able to use all my current XPlane aircraft will be a major plus.

Enjoy MSFS for the superb flight sim it is, but at the same time there is no need to be so blinkered to what else is out there - enjoy it all!
