Fps 15 RTX 3090

Featured Replies

Hi,

often when I am en route my fraps drop from 30-40 to 15-20. I am using a RTX 3090 with i9-10850k. I set my Terrain Level of Detail to 400 and as I wrote usually I get 30-40fps. However, after a while it drops and when I set Terrain Level of Detail to 200 I barely gain my 30-40fps back it stays at pretty low fps.

I am not sure if this has something to do with MSFS or with my GPU settings. Since I have the feeling that my GPU is throtteling back even it's not overheated. I have enclosed I screenshot where you can see some gpu parameters while enroute. I just don't understand this behaviour.

I just upgraded from 2070 Super to a 3070 TI. I had a similar experience. After the upgrade I was getting LESS FPS and like you, my card did not seem to be doing any work. It was severely underperforming.  I did a search on google using these words:

rtx 3070 ti low utilization

and I got dozens of hits and the solution for me (yes, my card works GREAT now locked to sixty FPS  at mostly ultra 3440x1440 4K) was found in the reddit thread about halfway down the first page. In summary I flashed my mobo bios and also restored my XMP setting in mobo turning my high speed memory back on.

Good luck. One you get it tweaked you’re gonna love it.

I have locked my fraps to 60 either via the nvidia control panel. RAM is running at 4000Mhz. Something is wrong with the MSFS. Just look at this test that I did. In the first screenshot you can see gpu paramenter when Terrain Level of Detail (TLD) is set to 400. In the second you can see the gpu paramenter when Terrain LEvel of Detail is set to 10. MSFS utulizes the 3090 more when I set the details down. When I use a TLD of 400 the gpu consumes 155 watts and fan speed is around 973rpm with a gpu utilization of 17%. When I set TLD to 10, GPU consumes about 210-220watts and fan speed is around 1240rpm at a utilization at 40%.

That make absoultey no sense. Please provide me some hints, maybe it's just me who isn't clever enough to set everything up properly.

I would wonder what aircraft are you flying and what's in your Community folder and what airport, if any are you near or any other extra bits.

I say this because I have a very similar setup and I get 48-60 pretty consistently, but have seen big slowdowns (sp says this is a word, apparently) when using certain aircraft and at certain payware (sp. not a word?) airports. REX weather thingie is a big fps hit on my machine, for example.

No, it has nothing to do with the GPU... it's CPU (main thread) bottleneck. I experience this every time I fly for more than 1 h - 1 h 30'.

It's a well known issue, for now just use LOD 400 when you fly low with small aircraft and 200 for long haul.

Ok, this guy basically suggests to re-install Windows because he found that many of his games run better on a fresh Windows installation. Then, he suggests to use an adequate PSU for your GPU. Finally, he suggest to upgrade to a higher res monitor (seriously?) or, if the CPU is a bottleneck, upgrade the CPU.

Now my question: WHAT exactly does this guy suggest? Does he have the slightest of an idea what he is talking about? There is no need to "hit him" as he asks for, it is so obvious that he has no idea and just floods a post with suggestion that are so basic and trivial it hurts me. Unbelievable...

Things that actually worked for me...

1.  I flashed the latest version of my motherboard BIOS.  My 3080Ti was acting really quirky before this (screen resolution changing by itself on start up, long start up times etc.).
My BIOS was about 14 months out of date.  Latest BIOS - all gone away!

2.  I lowered my expectations after a while.  Even with my processor up at 5.2GHz, and a slightly overclocked 3080Ti, I could see I wasn't going to make 60 FPS at 4k and the settings at ultra.  I now run fixed at 30 FPS.  GPU is running at about 60%, and is cool and quiet.  I am not totally happy, as I want 60 FPS ultimately, but it is what it is, it may be possible when the 4000 series cards come out.

3.  Fiddling with a few graphics settings.  Mainly almost all things set to 'application controlled' in Nvidia Control Panel.  Set it up inside the sim instead.

Things that I find questionable...

1.  Reinstall Windows to get your games running better...   Hmmm...  If you have to do this your Windows installation must be seriously messed up!

2.  Reinstall the game itself.  Nope.  Maybe to solve a specific issue or files that have been trashed, but generally, that shouldn't correct FPS issues.

3.  Trying loads of different driver versions.  Nope.  If there is a specific issue / bug fixed by the driver (like recently with the blue squares), then fine, but I have never known drivers significantly alter FPS.

Yep.  What I find useful is using Dev Mode's Frame Rate OSD and tuning Terrain LOD so that MainThread is always no greater than 20ms ideally.   Terrain LOD has arguably the biggest impact on the MainThread if you have other sliders at Ultra. I always look briefly at Dev Mode as I'm initializing a flight plan in order to stop the spinning logging indicator from its micro-stutter inducing appearance, and while there doing that look to make sure the MainThread is not greater than 20ms.  If it's even slightly above that I will dial back T-LOD until it's just under 20.  Quite often for me in the 787X HD T-LOD 200 is fine in the most complex settings, but rarely not so have had to go a little below T-LOD 200.  With low impact planes/scenery I can easily run T-LOD at 300-400.  It helps to think about where you're arriving to guess how it compares with your departure performance load and tune accordingly.  I rarely ever need to stop during final to reduce T-LOD as I'm good enough now at predicting what will be needed at arrival and set this up as I say at departure airport as I'm setting up for the flight.

My sense is when users experience degradation in frame rate after prolonged flights it has to do w/ setting T-LOD higher than can be coped with from gate to gate.  It's easy to be fooled by this because up at altitude there is no problem running T-LOD at 400 even in complex airplanes and over complex scenery.  But then on descent, approach and landing as you get closer to TD the machine simply can't keep up.  I think there is also some 'performance debt' accrued as well, but my sense is largely this is eliminated if one starts the flight with a T-LOD that is easily managed and <20ms seems to be a useful gauge.  IOW, be very judicious using T-LOD over 200 ever, unless you don't mind stopping and readjusting.  I don't like to ever have to stop and adjust in midflight myself.
